Iron Man has some free time on his hands these days, so what he is up to? Advertising, of course! Robert Downey Jr., the actor who put Iron Man  (and the Marvel universe) on the big screen map, is apparently once again part of a marketing campaign with OnePlus. While nothing has been confirmed, it appears he is working with OnePlus to promote its upcoming OnePlus 8 Pro. The image you see above is from a similar 2019 campaign, with Robert Downey Jr. standing in front a blue McLaren in a suit and sneakers, with a OnePlus 7 Pro in hand. OnePlus told The Verge last May that it it intended to use the actor's celebrity image across Asia, with its home country and India being points of focus. What... Read more...
Deepfakes have risen in prominence in a few short years. What first started off in the deep, seedy underbelly of the internet for erotica purposes has burgeoned into a vast operation with tinkerers swapping faces of celebrities and politicians, or manipulating video and audio to actually “put words” into a person’s mouths. The latest deepfake to take the internet by storm comes from EZRyderX47 on YouTube. He took an iconic film scene and replaced two of the main characters with “updated” actors that are very popular today. The movie is the 80’s classic Back to the Future, which stars Michael J. Fox and Christopher Lloyd.  But in... Read more...
The gloves are off now...or, rather, they are on, and then off, and then on again. Last night Robert Downey Jr. turned up at the MTV Movie Awards with an extended heretofore mostly unseen clip from Marvel Studios' cannot-get-here-fast enough Avengers: Age of Ultron. It’s a let 'er rip 90 seconds of the Iron Man versus Hulk battle that the film trailers, promos, and television commercials have only teased up until now.  Throughout the scene Downey Jr.'s Iron Man is bedecked in the "Hulkbuster" armor — arguably the very essence of <Hot>Hardware — that has had fans all a-tizzy since the first trailer for the film debuted back in October, and... Robert Downey Jr. melted many hearts last week when he showed up as Tony Stark to deliver a customized, bionic arm to a seven-year-old fan. The video went viral and showed how the thoughtfulness of others can make a lasting impression on a child. Today, however, Robert Downey Jr. is stepping back into his role as HTC spokesman, and the results are definitely more mixed. Ever since stepping into the role in 2013, Robert Downey Jr.’s commercials have been met with puzzled reactions and this year sees the arrival of nine new commercial “shorts.” All of the commercials are color-coded (i.e. white, black, purple, green), cover a wide range of genres (comedy, fantasy, horror), and all of them are extremely,... Here’s your feel-good story for Thursday afternoon. Albert Manero, who has a degree in Aerospace engineering from the University of Central Florida and is currently pursuing a doctorate in Mechanical Engineering, has made it a point to help serve others. "My parents always encouraged me to use my education to help others and to dream big dreams,” says Manero. “Now I want to inspire others to help engineer hope for the world." Manero is doing just that with Limbitless Solutions, a volunteer foundation that uses 3D printer technology to build bionic arms for children that have either lost a limb, or were born with partially developed limbs. Seven-year-old Alex fits into the latter category and... Read more...
HTC doesn't have a problem building high-end handsets that stand up to the competition. The HTC One is evidence of that. However, hardware will only get you so far, and without proper marketing, you'll get buried under a sea of Galaxy and iPhone devices, which is where HTC finds itself now. HTC doesn't spend nearly as much as Samsung or Apple on marketing, though perhaps bringing back Robert Downey Jr. to pitch the HTC One M8 is a sign of things to come. This is the guy who plays Iron Man, after all, as well as Sherlock Holmes and several other high profile roles. He was also a pitchman for HTC's brand last year in a handful of ads promoting "HTChange." Unfortunately for HTC, the ads were a bit... Read more...
