It appears that Toyota still doesn't quite know what to make of electric vehicles (EVs). The Japanese auto giant was among the first to deliver a production hybrid vehicle to the public with the Prius. The Prius rode a wave of popularity starting with its first-generation and peaking with its third-generation. However, as traditional internal combustion engines (ICE) vehicles have become more efficient and the availability of hybrids has expanded, Prius sales have started trending downward. And according to Toyota Motor North America CEO Jim Lentz, electric vehicles are also starting to blunt Prius sales. More specifically, Lentz calls out the Tesla Model 3. Fourth-generation Toyota Prius... Read more...
Following Honda's unveiling of a concept version of its third-generation Insight hybrid back in December, the Japanese automaker has pulled the wraps off the production version of the vehicle. As we reported last year, not much has changed in the translation from concept to production model with the only major difference appearing to be the fitting of smaller rolling stock. The new 2019 Insight is heavily based on the current generation Civic as you can tell from the overall body lines, greenhouse, and side mirrors. The primary changes in the design come up front and in the back. Up front, you'll find the latest incarnation of Honda's "Flying Wing" grille design, which features a chrome bar bisecting... Honda has been rather hit of miss in recent years with its dedicated hybrid vehicles. The first-generation Insight was a spunky, CRX-esque two-seat hybrid that was incredibly efficient (up to 70 mpg), but not exactly a practical vehicle. Honda followed up with the second-generation Insight in 2009 (which looked like a warmed-over Prius) and the CR-Z, which was in essence the true successor for the first-generation Insight. Neither was a sales success, and both have since been discontinued. Now, Honda is ready to try again with a new dedicated hybrid vehicle, and it will once again bear the Insight nameplate. Given the body lines, glass, mirrors, and overall stance, there's no question that this... Read more...
Few things will force a smile the way a throaty V8 engine will when revving it even just in neutral, but the downside to muscle cars and sporty vehicles such as the Ford Mustang Shelby GT350 and Chevrolet Corvette Z06 is gas mileage. Best case scenario is twenty-something miles per gallon. Compare that to Toyota's 2016 model Prius, which goes farther on a gallon of gas than any vehicle Consumer Reports has ever tested. The new model Prius averaged 52 MPG during testing, besting the record held by Honda Insight's 51 MPG set all the way back in 2000 when a gallon of gas ran in the neighborhood of $1.50. A year prior, gas prices averaged $1.14 per gallon, according to AAA. Given that gas prices continued... Read more...
Many have challenged Toyota’s dominant Prius, but none have come close to approaching its sales success. In fact, Toyota has upped the ante, expanding the family to include the Prius v and Prius c. And to top it off, Toyota just launched the fourth generation Prius, which brings with its unorthodox styling and increased fuel efficiency to fend off fresh competition. But don’t tell the to the folks at Hyundai. The company has probably the best chance yet at battling the Prius with its upcoming Ioniq hybrid hatchback. The South Korean automaker even has all of its bases covered, offering traditional hybrid, plug-in hybrid and all-electric versions of the vehicle. With that being said, spy photographers... Well, here it is, folks. We brought you images earlier this month that gave you a glance at the front 3/4 and rear 3/4 view of the fourth generation Toyota Prius. But late last night, Toyota officially pulled the wraps off the world’s best-selling hybrid vehicle. Let’s go ahead and get this out of the way — this thing looks weird; I mean really weird. With the exception of the first generation Prius which looked like somewhat like a normal econobox sedan, the following two generations were “different” in a boring kind of way. However, the new 2016 Prius has almost a French flavor to it with weird curves, jutting creases, and funky headlights that I don’t quite know how to describe. For its part,... Read more...
The Toyota Prius has never been what we’d call a “looker” by any means. The first generation model looked like a budget econobox sedan (it was), while the second generation model introduced the frumpy hatchback form-factor in 2003. The third-generation Prius, which was introduced in 2009 as a 2010 model year vehicle, was a further refinement of the previous model’s design, but still was instantly recognizable as the world’s most popular hybrid-electric vehicle. Perhaps in an effort to grab some more attention in an automotive landscape that is already littered with high efficiency cars, Toyota is going bolder with the fourth generation Prius. Seemingly taking a few styling cues from the limited... Read more...
One of the concerns of owning a full electric vehicle (not a plug-in hybrid like the Volt) is finding a charging station when necessary. Released to the App Store on Monday, March 7, there's an app for that. It's called PlugShare. Available free in the App Store, it was developed by Xatori. Xatori co-founder and chief executive Forrest North previously worked as an engineer at EV maker Tesla Motors, and also founded and was CEO of Mission Motors. The app is coming soon to the Android Market, the company said. The PlugShare network, aside from relying on public charging stations, allows those with or without EVs to sign up and "donate" their electricity to the network. Palo Alto-based, Xatori... This will sound outlandish, but any veteran driver of a Prius, or at least one who's worked hard to get decent mileage out of the hybrid, will tell you it's not. Toyota wants you to drive with a glass of water on your dash; it'll improve your MPG. Actually, Toyota wants you to drive as though you had a glass of water on your dash. The company has even launched a site called "A Glass of Water." Those who have driven a Prius, and gotten good at the "video game" display in the center dash display, which is designed to help you maximize your MPG, will realize the truth in this. It's the gentle, steady acceleration that keeps a glass of water balanced on your dash that is most efficient for your gas... Read more...
The Prius is not listed among the models that Toyota recently recalled (and temporarily stopped selling) for sticking accelerator pedals, but according to Apple co-founder Steve Wozniak, it has its own acceleration problem. At the same time, on Wednesday, reports of Prius brake problems on that same model year emerged.Steve Wozniak was speaking at the Discovery Forum 2010 when went off on a sidebar and began discussing his Prius' problems. Wozniak is a big fan of Toyota's hybrid, and has several. It's even appeared on camera when he was guesting on Kathy Griffin's "My Life on the D-List" as her faux boyfriend."I don't get upset and teed off at things in life, except computers that don't work... Pardon the headline mashup, but we're combing two automotive stories into one post here. While the two stories might not necessarily be directly related, they both shed light on different views of what the future of automobiles might look like. The first story is about the juicy tidbits General Motors (GM) has just revealed about the production-version of the Chevrolet Volt, and the second story is about a bloke who recently completed a successful test run of a self-guided, robotic Toyota Prius he built "in his spare time."        Credit: General MotorsChevrolet VoltAs part of GM's one-hundredth anniversary celebration today, the company finally unveiled the production version... Many have modified their Priuses, and one of those possible modifications is a rooftop solar panel system.  It seems that Toyota is considering the same as standard equipment for its own models, but only for high-end models, and only to power the AC. Toyota Motor Corp plans to install solar panels on some Prius hybrids in its next remodelling, responding to growing demand for "green" cars amid record-high oil prices, a source briefed on the matter said on Monday. The panels, supplied by Kyocera Corp would be able to power part of the air-conditioning on high-end versions of the gasoline-electric Prius, the source said. "It's more of a symbolic gesture," said the source, who asked not to... Read more...
Lithium Technology Corporation has unveiled a new line of batteries to be used in electric and hybrid vehicles. Made of lithium iron phosphate (LiFePO4) cells, LTC is confident that they could transform a 46MPG Prius into a 125MPG green machine.   “Batteries made of LTC's cells can provide 3000 charging cycles, which would be able to do 150,000 miles to 80% capacity for a 100 km or 60 mile all electric range plug in hybrid, which no other technology can claim,’ said Dr. Andrew Frank, Professor, Mechanical and Aeronautical Engineering at the University of California, Davis.”  However, EPA (Environmental Protection...
