When the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) settled their investigation of Intel, one of the stipulations of the agreement was that Intel would continue to support the PCI Express standard for the next six years. Intel agreed to all the FTC's demands (without actually admitting that it did anything wrong), but Intel's upcoming Oak Trail Atom platform presented something of a conundrum. Oak Trail was finalized long before the FTC and Intel began negotiating, which means Santa Clara could have been banned from shipping the platform. We thought maybe it would be fun to play off of AMD's tree-laden GPU codenames to come up with an interesting segue into the Radeon HD 5800 series' power efficiency. But we came up short. So, there's good news for those hoping to make their existing machine last a little bit longer. And there's bad news for those always looking for the next big leap in computing technology. The PCI SIG, the working group responsible for the forward movement of the PCI bus, has just confirmed that the release of PCIe 3.0 will be delayed by a significant amount. The standard was originally expected to be ratified by the end of this year, yet now the specification isn't apt to be passed off until Q2 2010. Facts are facts, and while one may have assumed the netbook was just a fad, it's now clear that the sector is strong. To that end, Samsung is making sure it's not going to miss out on the growth, this week announcing that it is sampling a SATA-interface mini-card solid state drive (SSD) with some of its customers. Super Talent is at it again on the SSD front, this time trotting out a new heavy-duty workstation with up to 6TB (yes, terabytes!) of speedy solid state storage. The newly announced PCIe RAIDDrive Workstation taps into the company's RAIDSSD technology and is based on Intel's quad-core Core i7 CPUs and Super Talent's 1333MHz DDR3 DIMMs. The PCIe RAIDDrive Workstations scale up 6TB in a Workstation Tower form factor, and the company claims that it can hit sustained sequential read rates of over 1.5GB/sec and sequential write rates of nearly 1.35GB/sec. BFG Offers FREE Upgrade to PCI Express from AGP cardsFor a limited time graphics card maker BFG Tech is offering registered BFG AGP Video card holders an upgrade to the equivalent BFG PCI Express version. Late last year, NVIDIA released a pair of new 8800-series graphics cards based on their G92 GPU.  The new cards were designed to keep NVIDIA's products at the top of the food chain at their respective price points, while also being a bit more affordable.  The first of the two was the GeForce 8800 GT.  It brought high-end performance to the mainstream crowd mostly due to its 112 stream processor configuration and 65m G92 GPU.  The G92's shrink to 65nm from TSMC's 90nm process used with the G80, brings with it lower power usage, but also lower prices due to a reduced die size, enabling NVIDIA to set the MSRP for the 8800...
