Apple TV users who updated to the new 2.0 software may have already received an update to 2.0.1.“The fix, available through the Apple TV's own update utility, is not documented by the company and appears primarily to be a maintenance update. However, a preliminary discovery reveals a Genres category under My Movies, letting owners browse by type.”We've been unable to discover any other changes at this stage, but we have a feeling that a patch rushed out without a list of changes might contain some fix for a critical vulnerability.... Some of you may never have heard of AutoPatcher. Well, how many of you have received a new computer with Windows XP SP2, and immediately hooked it up to the Internet to download all the post-SP2 hotfixes? What a pain, right? AutoPatcher was the fix for that.  It was a freeware project that put all the fixes into one downloadable image, that you could then apply - without connection to the Internet.  It even handled the "you must install X before Y issues."  Now it's gone. Today we received an e-mail from Microsoft, requesting the immediate take-down of the download page, which of course means that AutoPatcher is probably history. As much as we disagree, we can do very little, and although the... Read more...
A number of Blogger users, ourselves included, have noticed a series of publishing and saving glitches on Blogger lately.  There was even an outage this week, though that may have been the result of patches that Google performed to fix the issue.  Additionally, on Friday, Google added direct video upload services to Blogger. An undetermined number of Blogger publishers had trouble performing various editing and posting operations on Monday and Tuesday, but by Wednesday the problem had been solved. After marking the eighth 'birthday' of this free blogging service on Thursday, Google announced the video upload feature on Friday. "This feature allows you to upload videos and create... Read more...
A recent article in The Inquirer indicated that ATI, as well as other vendors, had  "particularly badly" written drivers which could expose the Vista kernel to attack.  This afternoon ATI plans to release a new driver package with a critical security fix in response to this issue. "The market recently discovered a potential security vulnerability that could impact AMD's Catalyst software package. After immediate investigation, AMD determined that a small section of code from one of the files in our installer package is potentially vulnerable," Carvill said. AMD is advising ATI Radeon graphics users to update to Catalyst version 7.8 once it is available at its software and drivers... Read more...
There has been much speculation recently about Windows Vista SP1 Beta, and even rumors and sightings around the web.  There was also a "leak" of some pre-Beta patches a week or so ago.  Microsoft has now officially released them. Microsoft still isn't commenting on when a beta of Service Pack 1 for Vista will be officially released (our money is on November), but the company has posted two updates that are expected to be part of that final package: the "performance and reliability" update and the "compatibility and reliability" update. These are official releases. The "standalone updates" have been posted to Microsoft's support site, and users will need to validate their Vista installs... Read more...
If you are one of those people who already owns an Apple TV, then you might want to go into your menu and force an update.  The security patch that fixes a buffer overflow issue will not be part of automatic updates at this time. Description: A buffer overflow vulnerability exists in the UPnP IGD (Internet Gateway Device Standardized Device Control Protocol) code used to create Port Mappings on home NAT gateways in the Apple TV implementation. By sending a maliciously crafted packet, a remote attacker can trigger the overflow which may lead to an unexpected application termination or arbitrary code execution. This update addresses the issue by performing additional validation when processing... Read more...
Apple has announced that the iPhone will go on sale on June 29th. The phone has a large touchscreen, will play video, play music, and display and store photos. Apple is hoping for --and can expect-- a sort of frenzy usually reserved for hard -to-find toys at Christmastime for the units, which come with either 4 or 8 gigabytes of  flash memory and will cost $500 or $600 respectively. Worldwide cellphone sales are running at about 1 billion units a year, and Jobs noted that if Apple took a 1 percent market share in 2008, that would mean the company would sell 10 million iPhones. The debut of the iPhone poses a challenge to other handset makers such as Motorola Inc. and Nokia,... Read more...
Information week is reporting that Apple has a patch out to fix performance issues with their Intel powered laptops: "Problems associated with the batteries included them not being recognized by the computer or the battery not charging when the notebook is plugged into an AC outlet. Also, the batteries could exhibit low-charge capacity or runtime when the battery is in fact fully charged. The battery pack could also appear visibly deformed." The phrase "visibly deformed" is just scary.  Having any part of a new laptop deform could cause issues with fit and finish, not to mention leakage, and nobody wants that.     The article goes on to mention some of the other recent problems with notebook... Informationweek has an article about Adobe deciding that they're not going to lift a finger to alter existing products to make them more compatible with Windows Vista. Some might be quick to point out that Adobe and MS have had issues over Vista & Office 2007 features, but do keep in mind that Adobe had a similar policy when they announced that they weren't going to make an OS X Universal Binary version of CS2. "Users of Adobe Systems' digital publishing products, including Photoshop, InDesign, and Dreamweaver, will have to shell out for new versions of the software if they want to run them without glitches on Microsoft's new Windows... It's autumn, and that means that it's time for Microsoft security flaws to turn red and fall from your computer. Phishers and scammers and hackers are worried that you'll become bored with assaults on Microsoft Internet Explorer and phony Paypal notifications, so they're attacking Microsoft Word and Powerpoint programs, among other methods this time: Microsoft Corp. on Tuesday released six patches to fix software flaws that carry its highest threat rating, including three for defects that attackers were already trying to exploit. The company said all six of the critical flaws could allow an attacker to obtain some access to other... Read more...
