Intel has been honing up its software chops over the past year, with the most visible results being on the GPU side. However, Intel hasn't forgotten about utilities for its processors, as witnessed by the new Intel Performance Maximizer. This is a new app that promises to easily overclock your unlocked Core processor with just a single click without ever once having to worry about navigating your motherboard’s BIOS. Intel describes the app as "hyper-intelligent" and says that it has the ability to analyze the "performance DNA" of each individual processor to determine what settings will be necessary for the optimal overclock. AMD officially announced its Ryzen 9 3950X enthusiast-class processor last night, and it is the highest-performing chip to ever grace the AM4 socket. The Ryzen 9 3950X has a total of 16 cores (32 threads) with a base clock of 3.5GHz and a boost clock of 4.7GHz. But of course, enthusiasts are never content with "stock" clocks and are always looking to boost performance even further. At AMD's E3 event, the chip company decided to push the Ryzen 9 3950X to 5GHz using LN2. AMD was able to maintain these speeds across all 16 cores at 1.608V. This most recent metamorphosis of the PC hasn’t been kind to the high-end desktop processor segment. While the industry as a whole continues to focus on the steadily growing ultra-mobile market, and releases new products in rapid succession, there have only been two major flagship desktop processors released since the Intel Core i7-3960X hit the scene in late 2011—the slightly faster Intel Core i7-3970X and AMD’s limited edition FX-9590. And even then, AMD’s chip is most likely going to compete with Intel’s more mainstream quad-core parts. There’s just something about high-end, custom graphics cards that makes us a little giddy. Perhaps it’s their menacing appearance--even the fastest, most powerful processors just look like their lower-end counterparts when sitting side-by-side. But a hulking custom graphics card, with an elaborate, oversized cooler and fierce heat pipes wrapping around a gargantuan heatsink just looks freakin’ cool no matter how you slice it. Whip out a high-end graphics card and a CPU in front of a casual geek and we promise you they’ll point to the graphics card and blurt out, “What the heck is that?” far more often than not. Using its new Phase Change cooling system (set to be available yet this quarter) and its professional overclockers, ORIGIN PC now offers the GENESIS system with a ridiculous 5.7GHz overclock. The Phase Change Technology can allegedly chill the CPU out as low as -40 degrees C. The above is a pretty cool (pun intended) bit of news, but ORIGIN is sweetening the deal--all of its deal, really--with 24/7 technical support for its customers. Starting today, the service is free and lasts for life. While out at an event in AMD’s Austin offices a couple of weeks back, we got a chance to get up close and personal with the company’s upcoming Bulldozer-based FX-line of processors. Many of the details disclosed at the event are still under embargo, but AMD is allowing a bit of a sneak peek with today’s Guinness World Record announcement. One of the demos at AMD’s HQ consisted of an array of overclocked FX processors, using various cooling methods, including air, water, and phase-change hardware. A funny thing happened during the course of this article—life got in the way. And in the few weeks that things were delayed, the PC graphics landscape changed dramatically. A couple of weeks before NVIDIA unleashed the GeForce GTX 580 onto the world, MSI and Gigabyte readied a pair of the most innovative GeForce GTX 480 cards to hit the market. Not only were the cards factory overclocked, but they featured custom coolers, re-worked PCBs, and hardcore, enthusiast-class features not found on any other GTX 480. MSI and Gigabyte sent us these custom GTX 480s, and just before putting the finishing touches on the piece, my wife went into labor, the GeForce GTX 580 hit, a few other launches needed...
