Following the somewhat messy and unfortunate breakup with Cyanogenmod, the OnePlus team has an announcement that it hopes will ease the pain and entice its following to stay loyal -- the OnePlus One handset is now permanently priced at $249. That's a $50 savings over its previous price, and it all began with what was supposed to be a temporary discount. "Last week, we announced a limited $50 discount on the OnePlus One. We were blown away by the response in sales and took a hard look at the numbers to make sure we were maintaining our commitment to our users," OnePlus stated in a blog post.OnePlus ultimately deemed the experiment "a great success," and in keeping with its mission of disrupting... OnePlus turned a lot of heads last year when it announced the OnePlus One, a $299 (16GB) or $349 (64GB) off-contract handset with high-end hardware and features. The only problem was, you needed an invite to get one. Fast forward to now, a year after the phone's debut, and the OnePlus One no longer requires an invite, nor will it ever again. "That’s right. In our first big celebration of the One’s successful year, we are opening up sales globally for everyone, every day of the week," OnePlus stated in a blog post. "We have always wanted to put great products into the hands of more people. And, we now feel confident that we have matured enough to handle the increased complexity that comes along... Read more...
It's been a long and sometimes contentious wait for OnePlus One owners eager to taste the sweetness of Lollipop, but the wait is now over -- Cyanogen OS 12 has begun rolling out to OnePlus One devices today, giving eager owners of the handset first lick. YU Yureka device owners will follow suit "very soon," Cyanogen announced in a blog post. Getting to this point was an adventure in and of itself. The OnePlus team made the mistake of telling users that a Lollipop update would arrive by the end of last month, though Cyanogen never offered up a time frame. As the promised dates came and went without an update, OnePlus One owners got a little antsy, prompting Cyanogen co-founder... Read more...
While Cyanogen’s CEO is sick and tired of OnePlus One owners complaining about the lengthy gestation period for CyanogenMod 12S, telling customers to “Calm the f**k down,” OnePlus at least delivering on its promise to release OxygenOS. We first heard about the OxygenOS ROM back in late January, with OnePlus explaining, “As an element, Oxygen is the epitome of simplicity, yet it’s also extraordinarily powerful… By itself, it’s simple and pure—a fundamental building block. But, as a part of something greater, it can do amazing things. Just like us.” OxygenOS is based on Android 5.0 Lollipop and brings with it a “back to basics” approach to standing out compared to other custom ROMs on the market.... Read more...
OnePlus One handset owners hoped they'd be rocking Lollipop by now, though things haven't gone exactly to plan. If they did, Cyanogen would have rolled out a version of its Oxygen OS based on Lollipop on March 27 and CyanogenMod 12S on March 30 at the latest, as was promised earlier this month. Now that we're into April, the natives are getting a bit restless, prompting a rather snippy response CEO Kirt McMaster. Short and sweet, "Calm the f down." Or in its entirety, McMaster took to Twitter to tell OnePlus One owners, "Guys, calm the f down. It's coming soon. When ready!" Perhaps it's not the most politically correct way to talk to customers, though it certainly gets the point... Read more...
It's been well over a month since OnePlus teased an Android 5.0 Lollipop update to OnePlus One owners. During that time, the latest version of Google's open-source mobile operating system has doubled in Android penetration, going from being installed on 1.6 percent of Android devices to 3.3 percent. So, when can you expect to see Lollipop unwrapped on OnePlus One handsets? The anticipated over-the-air (OTA) rollout for CyanogenMod 12S is on or before March 30, 2015, and for its own Lollipop-based OxygenOS, the updated ROM will push out on or before March 27, 2015. That's a bit later than OnePlus was original shooting for, which is the result of a few unexpected issues;... Read more...
Smartphone startup OnePlus is gearing up to reveal its Android ROM, but the date for the unveiling is a matter of debate. The phone maker teased the ROM and announced its name – OxygenOS – and said “Stay tuned; more information is coming February 12th,” in its blog post. Some have taken that to mean that the download will be available on the 12th, but OnePlus now appears to plan only to provide more details (not a download) at the upcoming event. The new ROM comes after a parting with Cyanogen and some difficulties with India. OnePlus selected the name “OxygenOS” from fan suggestions, because “As an element, Oxygen is the epitome of simplicity, yet it’s also extraordinarily powerful.” Unfortunately,... Read more...
You may recall that the only way to pick up a OnePlus One handset after it launched last year was through an invitation system. That's how it remained for several months, up until the latter part of 2014, in which OnePlus allowed a handful of limited time free-for-all sales. Now once again, you'll have a limited window to purchase one, if you're still interested. There's a countdown timer on the OnePlus One's website that displays the days, hours, and minutes remaining until the event kicks off on January 20, 2015 (that's tomorrow, folks!). Once the event begins, the OnePlus One will be available to anyone and everyone to purchase, though the window to buy one without an invitation will only last... Read more...
