In medicine, sometimes the cure is worse than the disease. The same goes for Windows, unfortunately, as we have seen many times in the past. More recently, Microsoft's Patch Tuesday roll out from last week has been causing problems for some users, such as busting Wi-Fi connectivity on certain NEC systems running Windows 10 1903. The issue lies with KB4515384. After installing the update, some users noticed that their Intel wireless network adapters were no longer functioning. Microsoft acknowledged the issue in a support document, noting it affects certain wireless adapters. "Microsoft and NEC have found incompatibility issues with Intel Centrino 6205/6235 and Broadcom 802.11ac Wi-Fi cards when... Read more...
An increasing number of smart devices are headed to market as the Internet of Things (IoT) takes hold. That includes everyday appliances—perhaps one day your toaster will pull images from the web to bake scorch them into your morning toast—along with more traditional electronics devices, such as monitors and displays. Working towards the latter, NEC has teamed up with Raspberry Pi on a new generation of large format displays with smart functionality. NEC in Europe said it will be sharing an open platform modular approach with Raspberry Pi, one that will enable a seamless integration of the latter's devices into the former's displays. Specifically, NEC is interested in Raspberry Pi's newest low-cost... Read more...
For many users, one monitor just isn’t enough. Sometimes, two displays won’t cut it either. If your latest project has you searching for multiple, high-end monitors, you’re likely going to be looking at professional workhorses like NEC’s MultiSync EA305WMi. The venerable display maker designed this 30-inch monitor specifically for multi-monitor configurations and added something it calls ControlSync technology, so you can manage multiple displays from a single interface. The MultiSync EA305WMi is a 30-inch (29.8-inch viewable area) monitor with a 2560x1600 resolution in a 16:10 aspect ratio. Although displays with 3840x2160 UHD resolution have been hogging the spotlight recently, 2560x1600 still... Read more...
Google is aggressively working to improve the speed with which we access the Internet. Google Fiber is one of its better-known efforts because it directly benefits regular users: Google Fiber provides the citizens of many major U.S. cities with affordable Gigabit Internet access. Now, the company is joining forces with other tech companies to build FASTER, an undersea cable system that will transfer data between the West coast and Japan at speeds that are, as Google’s Urs Hölzle points out in a Google+ post, “About ten million times faster than your cable modem.” FASTER will run from Chikura and Shima in Japan to the West Coast, where it will feed hubs in Los Angeles, Portland,... Today we're evaluating NEC's new MultiSync EA244UHD, a 24-inch 4K Ultra HD monitor. As part of NEC's EA series, this monitor is intended for high-end desktop users as opposed to professional graphics users, though there are features of the EA244UHD that may tempt potential customers who fall into the latter category. Things that separate this monitor from a traditional desktop display include extras like up to four-way display matrix support (there are multiple inputs for connecting multiple PCs), a ControlSync feature that lets users control the settings for up to half a dozen daisy-chained displays, a high-speed USB 3.0 hub, and a standard warranty that even covers the backlight for the first... While you were busy blinking, a new development was fast tracking its way onto the monitor scene. We're talking about the transition to 4K, otherwise known as Ultra High Definition (UHD). No matter what you want to call it, the technology shift treats your eyeballs to four times as many pixels as the current standard, which is Full HD 1080p. That's a huge increase, not just in the number of pixels, but in the resulting picture quality that comes from having so many more dots crammed into the same space. Usually when there's a major shift in technology, it comes with a standoff between hardware makers and content creators, each of which is waiting on the other to create a category big enough to... If you came here looking for something smooth and easy to digest, you may want to have a peek at a post above or below. All kidding aside, NEC's latest contribution to the enterprise realm is a real hum-dinger, digging deep into networking and efficiencies that all but the most hardened of IT administrators would fully appreciate. Let's start with a bit of background: NEC launched its ProgrammableFlow networking suite in 2011, which took advantage of the OpenFlow protocol -- a technology that enabled "complete network virtualization, allowing customers to easily deploy, control, monitor, and manage multi-tenant network infrastructure." This week, the company is making a meaningful contribution... Read more...
Japan’s NEC has created a smartphone that actually uses liquid cooling, which is a development that is either awesome or stupid, and we’re not decided as to which it is yet. In any case, the NEC Medias X N-06E smartphone indeed has a water-filled heatpipe that pulls heat away from the device’s processor, apparently dispelling the heat through the phone’s polycarbonate exterior; there’s also a graphene sheet on the motherboard, providing a nice additional heat buffer. The NEC Medias X 06E also features a quad-core Snapdragon S4 Pro (1.7GHz) chip, 13.1 MP camera, and a 4.7-inch 720p OLED display. With those specs, it’s hard to say if liquid cooling is really... Lenovo has a really good thing going with its computer business as it wrestles with Hewlett-Packard for the shipment crown, and though the company continues to experience better growth in the PC market than its rivals, it also recognizes there's a mobile movement taking place. Perhaps for that reason, Lenovo is reportedly looking to acquire NEC's mobile phone business. Citing a source that doesn't want to be identified, Reuters reports that NEC is in talks with multiple potential buyers. If true, it marks a shift in priorities for NEC, which up to this point had claimed that its mobile unit was an integral part of its overall business. NEC addressed the rumor by providing a statement through... Read more...
With each quarter that passes, it's clear Lenovo knows how to run a business. A little less than three weeks ago, Lenovo announced it had raked in more than $8 billion in revenue and $141 million in profits during its first financial quarter, representing year-over-year gains of 35 percent and 30 percent, respectively. The company is outpacing the competition and has gone from holding a 7 percent share of the global PC market in 2006 to 14.7 percent currently, trailing HP by a miniscule 0.2 percent. The point of all this is to not read too much into Lenovo's declining stock price. Oh, did we mention? Lenovo's shares are down more than 8 percent today, the result of a knee-jerk reaction by investors... Read more...
Haptics is one of the next big advances for touchscreen technology, and while there are always new ideas for tactile technology coming down the pike, the field is still wide open to innovation. NEC and the Tokyo Institute of Technology partnered up on an interesting concept that utilizes directional force to shift the whole touchscreen to give the user some tactile feedback. It’s actually sort of a primitive idea in some ways; there are four wires, each attached to a corner of the screen and operated by tiny motors, and they respond to input gathered by optical sensors in the bezel. What this technology does is provide a directional sensation, and because the tensile strength of the wires... Read more...

We're only four days into the New Year and already Advanced Micro Devices would probably like to take a mulligan. According to reports, Quanta Computer Inc. is angry at AMD and it's ATI division for allegedly selling defective mobile chips unsuitable for the toasty confines of a notebook. Quanta used the supposedly bad parts in notebooks made for NEC, many of which went on to malfunction. Now Quanta is suing AMD for breach of contract. "Quanta has suffered significant injury to prospective revenue and profits," the company said in its complaint, according to Bloomberg. The lawsuit also alleges breach of warranty, negligent misrepresentation, civil fraud, and interference with a contract, stopping... Read more...

While many Americans were chowing down on backyard grub, NEC and Lenovo were busy in Japan nailing down a rather substantial agreement. They have announced today the launch of NEC Lenovo Japan Group, which becomes Japan’s biggest PC provider. According to recent analyst figures, the new group will total nearly 25 percent of Japan’s PC market, with a strong presence in both the commercial/government sector and in consumer sales. Some might see this is two companies grabbing too much of the market, while others might appreciate complementary strengths (and hopeful benefits in speed/cost). NEC and Lenovo both hold stakes in the joint venture (51 percent by Lenovo and 49 percent by NEC).... Read more...

NEC this week announced the its new 23-inch MultiSynic EA232WMi display intended for corporate, financial, healthcare, engineering, CAD, and other professional applications. Why so? But there's more to it than that. "The MultiSync EA232WMi provides our elite IT customers with several improvements over its predecessor," said Lynn Gu, Product Manager for NEC Display Solutions.
