We haven't heard much recently from Motorola with respect to new smartphones, but that will likely change over the next few months. A massive leak has sprung in the HMS Motorola, and with it comes some details on the Moto Z3, Moto X5 and Moto G6 product families. Kicking things off is the Moto Z3 series. The Moto Z3 and Moto Z3 Play are said to features 6-inch FHD+ displays (18:9 aspect ratio) that include subtle curves along the sides (a la the Galaxy S8). There will also be a third Moto Z3 variant that will arrive at a later date with a Qualcomm Snapdragon 845 in tow -- perhaps this will be the Moto Z3 Force. The Moto Z3 family will be complimented by a new 5G Moto Mod, and as its name implies,... Read more...
Back in the day, the way most people took photos was with a Polaroid instant camera of the sort that shot pictures out the front for you to watch develop before your eyes. That good old shake and wait just a minute Polaroid almost instant gratification is making a bit of a comeback with some retro photography fans, but today most people take pictures with their smartphones. Today, however, Motorola has unveiled a new Moto Mod for the Moto Z family of smartphones that is called the Polaroid Insta-Share Printer, that could offer the best of both worlds. Motorola writes, "Simply snap the mod on your moto z, click the physical button to launch the camera and take a picture, then print right... Read more...
Motorola has made modular smartphones "hip" thanks to its Moto Z family. The original Moto Z, along with its Moto Z2 Force successor, supports Motorola's Moto Mods systems, which allows you to attach various accessories to the back of your smartphone ranging from speakers to cameras to battery extenders. Today Motorola has announced a new addition: the Moto Smart Speaker with Amazon Alexa. Rather than integrating Amazon Alexa directly into the smartphone hardware and the Android operating system, the Moto Smart Speaker is its own self-contained device. Think of it as a miniature Amazon Echo that you can carry around with you all the time. It contains four far-field microphones so that it pickup... Read more...
Last year’s release of the Moto Z family of phones introduced the world to Mods – magnetic accessory attachments that added features to the phones, like higher-quality speakers, a portable projector, or optical zoom camera. However, the US release of the Moto Z was limited to Verizon and unlocked customers only. This year Motorola is back with the new Z2 Force, packing support for the same Mods, but launching on AT&T, Sprint, T-Mobile and Verizon. While the latest Moto Z2 Force has all the makings of a flagship smartphone with its Qualcomm Snapdragon 835 processor, Super AMOLED display, and dual rear camera setup, it’s up against some fierce competition from the likes of Samsung, LG, HTC,... Size matters, at least when it comes to smartphones. The Moto Z2 Play is rumored to be slimmer than its Z Play predecessor, but will sacrifice coveted battery life as a result. The device will also likely include an upgraded Qualcomm Snapdragon 626. The Moto Z2 Play will be slightly under 6 millimeters in thickness and weigh in at 145 grams. The original Moto Z Play was a little under 7 millimeters and weighed 165 grams. Neither of these devices come close to the original Moto Z’s 5.19 millimeter thickness, however, Motorola is slowly inching its way back to this incredibly thin model. The original Moto Z Play boasted a 3510mAh battery, however, the Z2 will only include a 3000mAh battery.... Read more...
If you were a fan of the first-generation Moto Z Play, it appears that Lenovo/Motorola isn’t straying too far from that formula with its successor: the aptly named Moto Z2 Play. The original Moto Z Play wowed us with its epic battery life, which was attributed to its power-sipping Snapdragon 625 processor and its large 3510 mAh battery. According to leaked renders that are making the rounds on the internet, the Moto Z2 Play differs ever so slightly from its predecessor appearance wise. You’ll need a keen eye to spot the changes, which include a more oblong-shaped home button (which doubles as a fingerprint reader). And if you squint, it also appears that the Moto Z2 Play incorporates a dual LED... Read more...
Lenovo is making a pretty big push for Moto Z Mods, those snap-on accessories that extend or otherwise improve the functionality of the Moto Z handset. And why not? As one of the company's television commercials points out, the smartphone form factor has remained relatively the same for about the past decade without too much innovation to get excited about. The question is, are Mods the answer?Motorola's newest daddy seems to think so. Lenovo, which acquired Motorola from Google for $2.91 billion in early 2014, indicated a bit of buyer's remorse earlier this year when it said that it's "integration efforts did not meet expectations." That was after a previous quarterly report indicating that... Read more...
If you have one of Lenovo/Motorola’s Moto Z or Moto Z Force flagships in your possession, you’ll be happy to know that the Android 7.0 Nougat update will soon be on its way to your smartphone. Motorola announced that the over-the-air update will commence this week for customers. Besides bringing all of the OS improvements and features that you'd expect with Nougat, Motorola also announced that both the Moto Z and Moto Z Force are Daydream-ready. There are very few Daydream-ready smartphones on the market today, with the most high-profile offerings being Google's Pixel and Pixel XL. "Daydream offers an unprecedented opportunity to dive into a kaleidoscope of experiences," writes Motorola. "With... Read more...
Moto introduced the Moto Z family back in July with the launch of the Moto Z and Moto Z Force. Packed with flagship worthy hardware like the Qualcomm Snapdragon 820, both phones made a serious statement (click for full review) thanks to their modular capabilities, by way of Moto Mods. Moto Mods tune the already premium smartphones to a whole new level when attached. We were impressed by the Moto Mods we played with, including JBL's SoundBoost and the Moto Insta-Share Projector. Unfortunately, these phones were tied to Verizon at the time of our review, but unlocked variants are now trickling onto store shelves. Today, however, we take a close look at the newest sibling in the Moto Z family... Read more...
Earlier this summer, Lenovo announced its new Motorola Moto Z and Moto Z Force Android Marshmallow flagship smartphones. Both include Active Display, which fires up individual pixels on the display while your smartphone is locked to give you quick access to the current time and notifications. Since it only uses a limited amount of pixels on your AMOLED display, it’s very power efficient. Earlier this year, Samsung introduced a similar feature on its Galaxy S7 family of products called the Always-On-Display (AOD). The AOD was also specifically highlighted by Samsung during the introduction of the well-received Galaxy Note 7, which became available on the retail market earlier this week. Perhaps... Read more...
Last month, the partnership between Motorola and Lenovo seemed to crystalize when the combined company stepped out with its first co-branded smartphone products that will ship here in the United States. Lenovo acquired Motorola's Mobility division from Google a couple of years back, but has rightfully lead with the iconic Moto brand for new smartphone (and smartwatch) product introductions since the acquisition. It wasn't until we saw Lenovo's Product Engineer/Spokesman, Ashton Kutcher take the stage last month at Lenovo Tech World to launch the new Moto Z and Moto Z Force, that it became apparent the assimilation of Moto within Lenovo was complete. The Lenovo-Motorola Moto Z Droid, Moto... On Thursday, Lenovo summoned the tech press to San Francisco where it took the wraps off two new mobile phone platforms that could both be game changers. It unveiled the world’s first Project Tango-enabled phone in the Phab2 Pro, and introduced an all-new type of modular smart phone with the Moto Z. The Moto Z has the ability to be upgraded via things Lenovo calls Moto Mods. We got some hands-on time with all of the new gear after the keynote, which we'll be presenting to you here. Lenovo's event was dubbed Tech World and drew over 400 media attendees from across the globe. Lenovo CEO Yang Yuanqing (a.k.a. YY) led the keynote presentation, and along with folks from Google, Ashton... Read more...
We were impressed when the LG G5 rolled out with its “Friends Modules”, but Lenovo just upped the game with the new Moto Z family of smartphones. Today, Lenovo announced the Moto Z and Moto Z Force, which are next generation Android flagship smartphones. The Moto Z is the standard model, measures just 5.2mm thick and comes with a 5.5-inch QHD AMOLED display. Inside, you’ll find a Qualcomm Snapdragon 820 processor with 4GB of RAM and either 32GB or 64GB of storage. And just in case you want to expand your storage further, there’s a microSD slot that takes you up to 2TB. A 13MP rear camera features optical image stabilization and laser autofocus, while a 5MP front-facing camera with wide-angle... Read more...
