It looks as though we’ve come to the end of the road for Microsoft’s Lumia smartphone family. Microsoft has stopped selling the Windows 10 Mobile smartphones via the Microsoft Store, and there’s little chance that they will be restocked. Earlier this year, during the launch of the Lumia 650, Microsoft made it clear that it would be the last Lumia device introduced. And over the course the past few months, we’ve see reports that Lumia production was in fact winding down. According to a new report, the following Windows 10 Mobile devices are now out of stock from the Microsoft Store: Acer Liquid Jade Primo Bundle - Unlocked AT&T - Microsoft Lumia 640 XL AT&T - Microsoft Lumia 950 Microsoft... The writing has been on the wall for quite some time — Microsoft’s acquisition of Nokia’s Devices and Services Division has been a complete disaster and a money pit. Microsoft bought the division for $7.9 billion in spring 2014, and a year later, the company had to take an impairment charge of $7.6 billion for the purchase. Since that time, the Redmond, Washington-based company has laid off thousands of employees that it brought over from Nokia along with additional Microsoft employees that were already working on smartphone hardware and software. To make matters worse, smartphone sales have plummeted despite Microsoft’s steady supply of promotional offers on Windows 10 Mobile smartphones. During... Read more...
When it comes to smartphone operating systems, there’s Android and iOS — and then, there’s everybody else. BlackBerry 10 and Windows Phone/Windows 10 Mobile are both in the low single digits (or lower) and have failed to gain any significant traction in the marketplace in recent years. Despite the fact that Windows 10 Mobile is continually evolving and getting better as the year progresses, Microsoft made it clear that mobile isn’t a primary focus at this time. "We're fully committed to that 4-inch screen, there will be a time for it to be our focus, but right now it's part of the family but it's not the core of where I hope to generate developer interest over the next year," said Microsoft's... Forget almost everything you’ve read about the Microsoft Lumia 950 XL up to this point. We know that’s a bold statement, but bear with us here. Save for the phone’s specifications, if there’s one thing we’ve learned evaluating the 950 XL over the last few weeks it’s that virtually everything from the OS to the camera app has been changed or updated very recently, and it has affected battery life, responsiveness, and browsing, among many other things. Information published about the Lumia 950 XL that's any more than a couple of weeks old is simply outdated. It seems that Microsoft was tweaking a large number of elements and features in preparation for Windows 10 Mobile’s “official” release on... Read more...
After initially targeting a December launch for Windows 10 Mobile upgrades, Microsoft has announced that it is finally upgrading select Windows Phone 8.1 devices to its latest and greatest mobile operating system. Windows 10 Mobile, as its name implies, is built on the Windows 10 codebase and is Microsoft’s latest attempt to take on smartphone OS leaders Android and iOS. “Consistent with our approach to the Windows 10 PC upgrade, we are focused on delivering a high quality experience for our customers,” writes Windows and Devices Group Core Quality CVP Michael Fortin. “The Windows 10 Upgrade Advisor app can be downloaded from the Windows Store to see if the upgrade is available for your device.”... If you’re running a Lumia 950, Lumia 950 XL or a Lumia 550, your smartphone came straight from the factory running Windows 10 Mobile (which is still a work in progress). For those running older Lumias with Windows Phone 8.1, you’ve had to wait patiently for the official release of Windows 10 Mobile or take your chances in the Windows Insider program via test builds. Now, Evan Blass, who is well known to those that follow the mobile industry, is claiming that Microsoft will initiate a wide scale rollout of Windows 10 Mobile later this month. “In an email to partners, Microsoft is now targeting a release this month, to occur after the regular monthly service update,” said Blass. “The rollout is... Microsoft has just released another update to Windows 10 Mobile, bringing us up to version 10586.122. The company notes that this isn't going to be the bulkiest release it's let loose, but that those coming from Windows Phone 8.1 should notice the most obvious improvements with regards to the upgrade experience. The company also added support for 4 new phones: MCJ Madosma Q501, BLU Win HD W510U, BLU Win HD LTE X150Q, and ALCATEL ONETOUCH Fierce XL. This is one of the rarer builds that actually goes to the Slow and Release Preview rings, so if you're running the Fast ring and want to go with a more "stable" version for whatever reason, you will have to switch to one of those rings temporarily... It appears that the a wide-scale rollout of Windows 10 Mobile in the United States can’t be too away. We reported earlier this week that T-Mobile has started pushing the update to select Lumia smartphones in Poland, while the the wireless carrier is also prepping a German rollout in the coming weeks. Today, Windows Phone 8.1 users in Latin America are reporting that their Lumia 535 smartphones are being upgraded to Windows 10 Mobile — more specifically, they are being updated to Build 10586.39 courtesy of the CV LTA ROM. While it’s great news that Microsoft and its wireless partners are showing some love to various countries around the world with regards to Windows 10 Mobile upgrades, we’re certain... Read more...
Earlier this month, we reported that Microsoft was doing its best to avoid having to deal with slowpoke wireless carriers when it comes to delivering OS updates for Lumia smartphones. Instead of going through a carrier validation process, Microsoft on its own pushed build Windows 10 Build 10586.29 to Lumia 950 and Lumia 950 XL smartphones. In essence, this makes the operating system update process for Windows 10 Mobile more akin to iOS than what we’ve seen with the fragmented nature of Android. The ability to bypass carriers means that Microsoft can deliver more timely security and feature updates to customers without first having to receive approval from the “big four” wireless carriers in the... Microsoft already lifted the curtain to reveal Windows 10 Mobile when its Lumia 950 and Lumia 950 XL handsets launched to retail, but for legacy Lumia device owners, the waiting game is still being played out. For how long? If going by Vodafone Australia's time frame, Windows 10 Mobile won't roll out to older handsets until at least February of next year, if not longer.Vodaphone posted an updated chart detailing the statuses of new software versions for various handsets, including both Android and Windows 10 Mobile. For the latter, Vodafone lists five different Lumia phones -- Lumia 630, Lumia 640, Lumia 640 XL, Lumia 730, and Lumia 930, all of which will be getting Windows 10 Mobile. The "Current... Read more...
The mantra from Microsoft has been "Windows 10 for all devices" repeated over and over again, and having played with the OS extensively on the desktop, we think the company is headed in the right direction. At the same time, it's not a movement that will happen overnight. As we've seen. it's taking some time to roll out Windows 10 Mobile beyond Microsoft's flagship Lumia 950 and Lumia 950 XL devices. Microsoft originally promised to release Windows 10 Mobile to older Lumia handsets by the end of the year. No here we are with less than two weeks to go before it's time to toss our 2015 calendars in the garbage and replace them with 2016 prints. Where's Windows 10 Mobile? It's coming, though not... Be sure to check out our Lumia 950 review here... Microsoft rolling out an update to one of its OSes isn't often that big of a deal, because let's be honest, it happens all the time. An update just issued for Windows 10 Mobile is a bit of an exception. Not because of what it actually introduces (or fixes); but because of how it was released. Typically, any mobile OS update needs to go through the carrier that sold a customer their phone, and often, that can take a long time. Thanks to Apple's tightly-run ecosystem, there's never a delay there, but on Android, many will never see the latest version of the OS hit their phone (unless they're on a Nexus device). We're two months after the launch... Read more...
The Lumia 950 and 950 XL are important products for Microsoft, but not for the reasons you may expect. Microsoft isn’t trying to set the mobile market ablaze with these two smartphones. They are not necessarily meant to be explosive sales successes that take significant market share from Android and iOS. If they were, Microsoft would have thrown huge amounts of marketing muscle and dollars behind them, launched a massive advertising campaign, and worked deals with every major wireless carrier it could. But Microsoft didn't.  The Lumia 950 and 950 XL are more about laying a foundation and setting the direction and course for Windows 10 Mobile as well as Microsoft’s latest mobile strategy.... Microsoft and Nokia have done a great job of making Lumia smartphones difficult to break into at a low-level, but software hacker Heathcliff has just proven that it's not impossible. He's just released a great-looking tool called Windows Phone Internals, and it can do everything from unlocking the bootloader to replacing the phone's ROM. WP Internals is a completely free download, though Heathcliff welcomes donations by those who've found the tool useful. Based on the introduction video, it seems that a lot of effort went into this, and unlike most tools of this nature, detailed descriptions are found everywhere to ensure that you know exactly what's going to happen once you click a button. Microsoft just opened a brand new, flagship store at 677 5th Avenue, in New York City. And since we’re just a short drive away, and were already spending some time in Manhattan today with the folks from Motorola and Verizon, we thought we’d pop in and take a look around.Microsoft's New Flagship Store On 5th Ave.Before you even get close to the front doors, there is no mistaking that this new store is all about Microsoft. Multiple logos are visible from across the road and a ton of product is front-and-center for all to see, behind the giant wall of glass out front. The store is comprised of multiple stories—an elevator has buttons for floors 1 – 4, but only the first three floors are open to... Read more...
If anyone has earned the luxury to take some time off from a busy work schedule to spend more time with family, it’s Joe Belfiore, Microsoft Corporate Vice President, Operating Systems Group. Belfiore has been a key evangelist for the Windows Phone platform in recent years and introduced us to the new Windows 10 Mobile operating system which is a key lynchpin in Microsoft overall Windows 10 strategy. Belfiore announced today via Facebook that he will leave Microsoft in January, heading out to sea for a global trip with his family. Given that Microsoft has already pushed Windows 10 out the door, and the company is putting the finishing touches on Windows 10 Mobile, there’s likely no better time... Read more...
When Microsoft unveiled its Lumia 950 and 950 XL smartphones a few weeks ago, it seemed to genuinely woo the masses. In fact, the entire event overall was quite impressive, and in a way, refreshing. While the Surface Pro 4 and Surface Book were proverbial stars of the show, it could be argued that the biggest gain Microsoft may realize could come from their new Lumia flagship Windows 10 phone devices. One of the biggest features of these new phones is Continuum, which allows you to connect the phone to a dock, which then connects to a monitor and peripherals. In this configuration, a Windows 10-like environment will be created for desktop use, while the phone interface itself will continue to... Read more...
Windows Insiders are always eager to test a new version of Windows 10 Mobile. After all, what tech geek doesn’t like being on the bleeding edge of software development, in addition to knowing that their valuable feedback is helping to shape Microsoft’s flagship mobile operating system. So testers will be happy to learn that Windows 10 Mobile Insider Preview Build 10549 is now available, just a few days after Windows 10 Insider Preview Build 10565 was released for desktops, notebooks, tablets, and convertibles. In Build 10549, Microsoft has made improvements to the Messaging app, expanded support for emojis, and opened up Cortana to users in Japan, Australia and Canada. Microsoft also no longer... We were fortunate enough to attend Microsoft’s Windows 10 Devices event in New York yesterday, at which the company unveiled a new line-up of products, including the innovative Surface Book, the thinner and lighter Surface Pro 4, a re-vamped Band fitness tracker and smartwatch, and a trio of Lumia-branded smartphones, the 950, 950 XL, and 550.   Microsoft CEO Satya Nadell (above) And Panos Panay Microsoft’s Panos Panay handled the bulk of the presentations, and presented the new Surface and Lumia devices, though other execs participated as well, and showed off things like Project X-Ray for Hololens and the new Band. Microsoft has a big hardware unveil set for tomorrow morning and we’re eagerly awaiting to see what the company has in store. Luckily, Microsoft will be streaming the event for all to see tomorrow morning at 10 AM EST — you’ll be able to watch event online using your web browser or from the comfort of your living room on your Xbox One right here. But what exactly is Microsoft planning to announce tomorrow? Although the company hasn’t officially said what’s on the agenda, we have a pretty good idea that we’ll see the Surface Pro 4, Lumia 950, Lumia 950 XL, and a second generation Microsoft Band. Surface Pro 4 Of all the devices that Microsoft is expected to announce tomorrow, we know the least... Read more...
All eyes are going to be on Apple next month, as the company is scheduled to announce its next generation iPhone 6S/6S Plus smartphones along with new iPads (and possibly a next generation Apple TV). But attention will shift in October, as Microsoft is set to launch its Surface Pro 4 along with the long-awaited refresh to its Lumia smartphone range at the flagship level. A Surface Pro 4 is almost certainly a lock for the October event, given that the current Surface Pro 3 is over a year old, which is pretty long lifecycle in the tech industry. We don’t have much by way of leaked features or specs with regards to this next generation tablet, but it wouldn’t be out of line to expect Skylake-based... Read more...
Windows 10 is shaping up to a spectacular mobile operating system release for Microsoft. With features like Continuum which allows smartphones into functioning desktops and support for ported Android and iOS apps, Microsoft is throwing everything but the kitchen sink at prospective buyers to boost its low single-digit market share in the smartphone market. Although we were saddened to hear that Windows 10 for smartphones won’t be arriving at the same time as the PC version, there is at least some solace for Lumia 640 owners. Microsoft General Manager (Scandinavian division) Ossi Korpela has confirmed that the Lumia 640 will be one of the first Windows Phone handset to receive Windows 10 when... Read more...
