There’s a fine line between plucky confidence in your underdog self and sad, desperate delusion, and Nokia is riding it. The company is a shadow of its former self, with well-documented troubles and an all-in wager on Windows Phone, and it really needs a big hit to get some momentum going in the mobile marketplace again. Nokia hopes--nay, believes--that its latest family of Windows-based smartphones will be the ticket. The Nokia Lumia line of smartphones looks promising, but in tech as in everything, having a good product is only part of success. Right now, Nokia needs consumers to think of the Lumia as a cool, viable alternative to the fleet of phones from the likes of Apple, HTC, Samsung,... Read more...
If you've recently bought a popular smartphone and are having trouble with it, Fixya's July update may have information on solving your headaches. The blog lists data on devices as recent as the Samsung Galaxy SIII, and details common issues with the iPhone 4S, Nokia Lumia 900, HTC Titan II, Galaxy Nexus, and the BlackBerry Curve (for the six people out their using one). The breakdown of issues is rather interesting. Microphone problems top the charts for both Samsung devices. With the Galaxy Nexus, which has been out for awhile, there's a list of ROMs or software programs that may fix the problem. S III owners are comparatively out of luck, the best the blog can offer is to look for Android... Read more...
In as roundabout a way as possible, Nokia announced that it will be cutting 10,000 jobs by the end of 2013 to reduce its operating expenses. The company also announced plans to cut some of its R&D efforts by closing facilities located in Germany and Canada, consolidating some manufacturing (and therefore closing a plant in Salo, Finland), and possibly divesting some of its assets. (Later in the day Nokia announced that it was selling off Vertu to a European equity group.) Nokia is also shaking up its leadership team, with several key executives stepping down and others stepping up. Guess what, Lumia 900 users? You've got an update to download. Already, just days after launch, Nokia's new Windows Phone-based flagship has an update, and it's to fix some lingering data connectivity issues that some customers were facing. Nokia knows that they have to nail this launch if they ever want Windows Phone to be a major player in the U.S. (and to get carriers excited about it), and even in addition to pricing the LTE handset at just $100 on a 2-year contract, now they're really stepping up to the plate in terms of customer service. Even though the issue only plagued a certain segment of users, the update is available now for all, via Zune (PC) or Windows Phone 7 Connector for Mac.... Read more...
Windows Phone is only about a year and a half old in the market at this point but Nokia has a much longer lineage. In the past 12 months though, their two worlds have collided in a fashion that will have repercussions for quite some time to come, with Nokia CEO Stephen Elop firmly committed to focusing his company's turnaround on what Microsoft is cooking up in Redmond for handsets. It has been, and will continue to be, a long shot. Nokia's smartphone market share in America has eroded so severely that many consumers have assumed that Nokia has pulled out of this market entirely, ceding ground to Apple and the myriad companies that have backed Google's Android platform. But the Lumia 900 represents... Read more...

It’s been downright painful to write about Nokia for many months; the company made missteps, suffered ugly losses, slashed thousands of jobs, and made some eyebrow-raising decisions, the most notable of which was going all in on Windows Phone 7. Nokia’s recent smartphone market share freefall was mostly due to ditching its Symbian OS in favor of Windows Phone 7, and as expected, Nokia is slowly gaining ground again as its Windows Phone 7-based Lumia family of devices proliferates. Chart: Strategy Analytics According to Strategy Analytics, in Q4 2011 Nokia had 33.1% of the market share--for Windows smartphones, that is. A year before, the company had 0% of that market. More notably,... Read more...
Nokia's Lumia line of Windows Phones are still gaining traction around the globe, and as Apple found with the white iPhone, there's a market to be tapped with light-hued smartphones. The Lumia 800, starting later this month, will also be available in white. It'll have Windows Phone 7.5, a 3.7-inch AMOLED ClearBlack curved display, a 1.4 GHz processor with hardware acceleration and a graphics processor. The Lumia 800 contains an instant-share camera experience based on leading Carl Zeiss optics, HD video playback, 16GB of internal user memory and free SkyDrive storage for storing images and music. You'll also get a full-fledged personal navigation device (PND) with free, turn-by-turn navigation... Read more...
For whatever reason, Nokia's leaving America in a trail of dust when it comes to Windows Phone 7. The Lumia 800, the company's new flagship handset, is launching overseas first, with America not seeing any of their WP7 phones until 2012. Nokia fans in the USA are understandably bummed about the whole ordeal, but Nokia insists that they're trying to roll this out in a controlled fashion, with each market getting very intentional treatment. This is probably shorthand for saying that Nokia has to work with the carriers in the States to launch their phone, which isn't exactly the case elsewhere. But if 2012 just feels too far away, there's good news. The Lumia 800, in unlocked off-contract form,... Read more...
