When we think about ECS and their product lines, we typically expect a budget-minded approach. Solid products at reasonable prices that don't exactly wow the consumer, but don't hit them hard in the wallet either. The ECS X48T-A motherboard that we looked at a few weeks ago was one of the first steps by ECS to change that image, although a few missteps with the construction as well as some overclocking issues didn't overly sway us to their new way of thinking. Thus, we were a bit surprised when we first heard about the ECS GeForce 9800 GTX+ Hydra - a twin pack of high-end graphics cards consisting of two GeForce 9800 GTX+ cards combined with liquid-cooling. The 9800 GTX+ is the upper level of... Read more...

On Thursday Webkit, the open source browser engine that is notably used in both Safari and Chrome, announced that it is the first browser engine to fully pass the Web Standards Project (WaSP) Acid3 test. In late March Webkit announced it had achieved "most" of the Acid3 test, with the only missing issue the fact that part of the Acid3 test is that the animation during the test must be "smooth." That same month, another engine, Presto, achieved the 100/100 rendering below, but it still has not achieved "smooth" animation. As you can see in the results dialog which you receive by clicking on the “A” in Acid3, there is confirmation that Webkit indeed passed the smooth animation condition on a 2.4GHz... Read more...

The FBI recently uncovered approximately 3500 fake Cisco systems routers in government networks, but that isn’t the end of the problem.  Now it seems that Cisco routers may soon come under attack by rootkits:"A security researcher has developed malicious rootkit software for Cisco's routers, a development that has placed increasing scrutiny on the routers that carry the majority of the Internet's traffic.Sebastian Muniz, a researcher with Core Security Technologies, developed the software, which he will unveil on May 22 at the EuSecWest conference in London."Considering how many Cisco products are in use in various ISPs, hosts, and even backbones, this could be a massive problem for anyone who's... Never being ones to shy away from poking a bit of fun at excessive censorship, we'd like to posit that China will ban the kitchen sink sooner or later.  Thus far The People's Republic of China has banned pornography, YouTube (several times only to be unblocked later), freedom of speech on forums and e-mail, and now mapping web sites.“Eight government agencies, including the foreign ministry, are to tighten supervision of geographical information available online, the official China Daily reported. There are nearly 10,000 online map websites in China and authorities will close down most of them as they show maps without approval, said Min Yiren, deputy director with the State Bureau of Surveying... A few months ago, we rounded up some of the fastest DDR3 memory kits that were available and came away impressed by how well frequencies and performance had scaled in the short time since DDR3 had been introduced on the desktop.  Since that article was published, however, not much has changed on the DDR3 front in terms of overall performance.  1800MHz kits are still the cream of the crop and the latency of the top kits hasn’t dropped below CAS 7.  The landscape has changed a bit though, thanks to ever dropping prices, maturity, and some newly introduced features. At the time our round-up was published, we praised one of Corsair’s kits in particular, the TWIN3X2048 - 1800C7D, for... Read more...

It's been nearly two years since since Sony got into the rootkit business. Not intentionally, but the DRM installed by Sony BMG CDs when you tried to play them on your PC had rootkit qualities. Not only that, but in a real-life example of the vulnerability, hackers used it to hack World of Warcraft.Unfortunately, it seems Sony did not learn its lesson. According to F-Secure Corp., the fingerprint-reader software included with the Sony MicroVault USM-F line of flash drives installs a driver that hides in a hidden directory under "c:\windows". That directory, and the files within it, are not visible through Windows' usual APIs (application programming interface), said F-Secure researcher... Read more...

If you’ve registered for almost any type of online service in the past few years, then you’ve probably run into a Human Interface Proof (or HIP for short).  HIPs are those strings of letters and/or numbers that look like they came from some malfunctioning typewriter. They’ve proven to be quite useful in cutting down the number of bot-generated accounts spamming message boards and e-mail boxes, at least they did for a while.Malicious programmers have now had enough time to adapt to the technology, and the struggle to modify HIP to stay ahead of hackers is now the order of the day: “When Hotmail first started using HIPs, the number of e-mail accounts generated on the first day dropped by 20 percent...
