We’re always on the lookout for a great tech deal, and one just came across the news desk today on a popular smartphone from Apple. In this case, we’re talking about the iPhone XS Max, which is Apple’s flagship offering that first launched back in 2018. While the iPhone XS Max is coming up on two years old, it’s by no means “over the hill” when it comes to performance thanks to its A12 Bionic SoC, which is still highly competitive with even today’s Snapdragon 855 and Snapdragon 865 flagships. When the iPhone XS Max first launched, it was priced from $1,099 for the 64GB model, and topped out at $1,449 for the 512GB model. Once the iPhone 11 Pro family... Read more...
Apple has just released Smart Battery Cases for its 2018 lineup of smartphones, which include the iPhone XR, iPhone XS, and iPhone XS Max. The cases are available in either white or black finishes and aren't exactly aesthetically pleasing with a rather large "hump" on the back that houses the battery. Existence of the cases was first leaked in early December. The new Smart Battery Case will cost you $129 regardless of which iPhone model you have. The Smart Battery Case for the iPhone XR will give you a maximum of 37 hours talk, 20 hours internet, and 20 hours of video. The iPhone XS paired with its Smart Battery Case will return figures of 33 hours, 21 hours, and 25 hours... Read more...
You can only push prices so far before customers start turning away from your products. That seems to be the case with Apple's 2018 lineup of iPhones, which are the most expensive ever introduced for customers. A new report indicates that many Chinese retailers have taken the uncommon step of slashing the prices of relatively new iPhones in order to win the attention of customers. According to Reuters, popular Chinese retailers like Suning and JD.com are discounting models like the iPhone XR by as much as $118 off its starting price. In total, six retailers have instituted dramatic price cuts in order to spur iPhones sales according to the news organization.  At this point it's not... Read more...
Have consumers finally had enough of Apple's efforts to jack iPhone pricing into the stratosphere? There are numerous warning signs suggesting that this is the case. However, Apple's decision to not breakdown sales numbers for iPhones, Macs and iPads in its future earnings reports could obfuscate any real analysis of sales data. Apple's flagship iPhone prices have been on the rise for years, but things took a turn towards the extreme with 2017's launch of the iPhone X. The device, with its notched display and first-generation Face ID system, launched with a starting price of $999. Despite analysts and pundits balking at the high price tag, consumers were seemingly unfazed, propelling the iPhone... Read more...
A man from Ohio claims he was twice burned by Apple, first by an iPhone XS Max that allegedly caught fire in his pants pocket and injured his "buttocks region," and then again by poor customer service, both inside an Apple Store and over the phone. As a result, the man is contemplating legal action against Apple. Image Source: iDrop News via Josh Hillard Pictures of the burnt iPhone XS Max show severe damage to the handset. It's most visible on the front display where more than half of the screen is charred and deformed, but there is also significant damage on the sides and back of the handset. Clearly something unfortunate happened, and according to the phone's owner, it happened rather abruptly... Read more...
Way back in late 2015, Apple released its first Smart Battery Case intended for use on the iPhone 6s. Priced at $99, the device boosted overall runtimes for the device to 25 hours, but was widely mocked for its ghastly battery "hump" which looked totally out of place with absolutely no attention paid to aesthetics. Things didn't improve with the Smart Battery Case for the iPhone 7. Now it looks as though Apple is ready to take another stab at the accessory three years after it launched the original. Guilherme Rambo did some digging into watchOS 5.1.2 and found a fresh icon that depicts a new Smart Battery Case. This time around, as you can see by the pill-shaped cutout for... Read more...
Might it be possible that consumers are starting to suffer from iPhone fatigue? Well, anything is possible, as Kevin Garnett excitedly proclaimed after helping the Boston Celtics take home its 17th NBA championship, only Apple is far less likely to be as enthusiastic about an apparent slowdown in iPhone sales. It was reported two weeks ago that Apple had cut back on iPhone XR orders amid tepid demand. According to that report, Apple told three separate iPhone XR suppliers to either reduce expectations for orders, or to eliminate manufacturing lines for the device. In addition, Apple reportedly told Foxconn and Pegatron, its two main suppliers, to halt plans for any additional iPhone XR production... Read more...

People wanting to acquire some tech goodness for Christmas giving can start shopping right now in fact. Best Buy is offering a deal on the iPhone X that will afford people who trade in eligible devices the ability to get in on a $275 gift card for their trouble. The iPhone X has to be activated on AT&T, Verizon, or Sprint, though T-Mobile is nowhere to be found on this deal, unfortunately. The big caveat of the deal is that... Read more...
“Beautygate” is about to become a thing of the past. Apple promises to eliminate the notorious skin smoothing bug with iOS 12.1. The update will improve selfies on their latest crop of smartphones -- the iPhone XS, XS Max, and XR. Many users noticed that their skin appeared to have been “smoothed” and warmed-up in their selfie shots when they used their front-facing camera. Some users enjoyed the effect while others were downright insulted. Apple was accused of trying to make their users look more appealing, even though it has claimed in the past that it does not use beautification filters. Apple looked into the issue about a month ago and discovered that a bug in its... Read more...
Apple's entry-level iPhone for 2018 is the iPhone XR announced in September along with the iPhone XS and iPhone XS Max devices. Word is that the October ship date announced at the unveiling of the XR was due to issues with the notched LCD. Whatever the issue, the iPhone XR is expected to ship this week. Ahead of that launch, some details about what the XR will cost to repair if you break it have surfaced, and it sounds as if buyers should get the AppleCare+ warranty on the device (or at least buy a case). Buyers who crack the screen on their iPhone XR, and don’t have AppleCare+, will shell out $199 for a screen replacement. Consider that the iPhone XR starts at $749 for the 64GB version,... Several complaints have been leveled against Apple's iPhone XS and XS Max smartphones since launch. One of the major complaints from users was allegedly poor WiFi and cellular signal quality; something recent tests refute. Other complaints have focused on charging with the smartphones not recognizing the charger for some users.  In addition, testing by Tom's Guide found that the battery life on the iPhone XS was shorter than that of Phone X that preceded it. New testing from Consumer Reports has found the opposite to be true. The publication has tested the iPhone XS and iPhone XS Max and found that both devices outperformed Apple's claim for battery life per charge compared to the iPhone... Read more...
As is the case with most new iPhone launches, the latest crop of smartphones are giving some users trouble. Some users have complained that the wireless signal strength for both the Wi-Fi and the cellular connections aren’t as strong as previous iPhones offered. Now reports are coming in that the iPhone XS and XS Max are having charging issues via the bottom-mounted Lightning port. Complaints have turned up on the Apple discussion forums with multiple users claiming they have had the same issue with their iPhone not recognizing the charger when plugged in. One iPhone XS Max user named xMASTIFFSx wrote on the Apple support forums, "So Just got my new iPhone. and noticed this issue I've... Read more...
Apple's iPhone XS Max is the biggest (based on its 6.5-inch display) and most expensive iPhone ever released. The flagship starts at $1,099 and can cost as much as $1,449 if you opt for 512GB of onboard storage.  Apple is by far the most profitable smartphone OEM on the planet, and the folks at TechInsights have torn the smartphone apart to get an estimated build cost. Not surprisingly, the device is allegedly more expensive to build than last year's iPhone X. The mid-range 256GB SKU is estimated to cost $443 for the parts alone compared to $395 for last year's 64GB iPhone X. Not surprisingly, the most expensive component of the iPhone XS Max is the 6.5-inch OLED display, which... Read more...
When Apple announced the iPhone XS and iPhone XS Max earlier this month, it made some bold claims about battery life for both flagship devices. Compared to the iPhone X, Apple said that the iPhone XS would last 30 minutes longer per charge. When it comes to the massive iPhone XS Max, the company said that runtimes would last an hour and a half longer. However, new testing by Tom's Guide suggests that Apple's numbers might be a bit of an exaggeration. The site ran both iPhone XS models through its usual Battery Test regimen, which includes web surfing at 150 nits brightness, disabling auto-brightness, and turning off True Tone. Additionally, all tests were performed... Read more...
Apple unveiled its new 2018 iPhone models earlier this month, and the devices included the iPhone XS, iPhone XS Max, and iPhone XR. Not long after the devices were announced, a report surfaced that claimed the devices offered faster downloads than previous generation iPhones. However, some iPhone XS and XS Max buyers are complaining that their devices suffer from bad Wi-Fi and cellular signal strength. Some of the owners of the new devices are claiming that their previous iPhone 7 and iPhone X smartphones offered better signal strength. One Twitter user, Justin Flood, reports that his iPhone 7 had a significantly better signal than his new iPhone XS. He also mentions that Speedtest shows... Read more...
Once again, Apple saw long lines at some of its stores by customers wanting to snag a new iPhone XS or iPhone XS Max. Don't worry yourself about buyers standing out in the sunlight for too long, though, because Huawei was kind enough to bring some shade. No, we're not talking about umbrellas or makeshift tents, but a different kind of shade. Huawei was spotted giving away free power banks to customers in line for a new iPhone model at Apple's store on Orchard Road in Singapore. That particularly location is Apple's first store in Southeast Asia, which opened for business around a year and a half ago. The power bank has a 10,000 mAh capacity and sells for 80 Singapore dollars (around $59 in US... Read more...
Apple has begun shipping the first wave of iPhone XS and iPhone XS Max smartphones to customers, and the former has already been disassembled (complete with video footage). Right off the bat, getting inside the new iPhone XS is a bit harder compared to last year's iPhone X. If you recall, the iPhone X is IP67 rated for water/dust resistance, while the iPhone XS family bumps that up to IP68. As a result, the seals holding the display into place are stronger, making removing it more of a hassle (although not impossible).  The other thing of note is that the L-shaped battery from last year remains. However, while there were two separate cells on the iPhone X, the battery in the iPhone... Read more...
Have we all lost our minds when it comes to smartphones? Or perhaps the better question is, have smartphone OEMs completely jumped the shark? Apple announced its new 2018 lineup of iPhones last week, and the flagship iPhone XS starts at $999. That itself isn’t too surprising, given that that iPhone X launched at the same price last year. However, Apple's iPhone XS Max takes the cake with a starting price of $1,099. Maybe I’m just a cheapskate, but that’s a boatload of money for a smartphone that isn’t all that much of an upgrade over last year’s iPhone X (with the exception of the larger 6.5-inch display). But it doesn’t stop there. Even though you’re... Read more...
You may have noticed that the new batch of iPhones Apple recently announced do not embrace 5G connectivity, even though wireless carriers can't stop talking it. Apple is going to wait at least one more generation. That doesn't mean the new iPhone models don't deliver a bump in wireless performance. They do, as evidenced by results collected by SpeedSmart. SpeedSmart posted the results to Twitter and they show impressive speed gains from the iPhone XS and iPhone XS Max, compared to the previous generation iPhone X. Faster uploads and especially faster downloads can be seen across AT&T, T-Mobile, and Verizon. For whatever reason, Sprint is curiously missing from the roundup. In any event, here's... Read more...
Reviews for the iPhone XS and iPhone XS Max are filtering on to the internet this morning, and Apple CEO Tim Cook is out touting his company’s new flagship smartphones. However, the new phones come at a hefty price – especially with regards to the bigger of the two smartphones. Apple first danced with a $1,000 smartphone with last year’s iPhone X, and the iPhone XS Max takes that trend and runs with it. Apple iPhone XS and iPhone XS Max Cook went on Good Morning America to talk about Apple and its new wave of products (including the Apple Watch Series 4), and the topic of pricing was brought to the forefront. “We want to make an iPhone for everyone.... Yesterday, Apple officially announced its A12 Bionic SoC, which is a 7nm chip built by TSMC. The processor powers the iPhone XS, iPhone XS Max and the iPhone XR. At the time, Apple didn’t provide much with regards to the A12 Bionic's hard numbers or specs other than to say that it has a 6-core CPU (with two high-performance cores that are 15 percent faster than the 10nm A11 Bionic) and a 4-core GPU (which is up to 50 percent faster compared to the outgoing chip). The A12 Bionic is also said to use 50 percent less power than its predecessor. However, we’re now getting more detailed metrics about the A12 Bionic thanks to a Geekbench listing that popped up this week, which... Read more...
Although much of the event was spoiled by leaks, Apple today announced three new iPhones ranging in size from 5.8 inches to 6.5 inches. Apple says that these are the most advanced iPhones that they have ever created, which is something that the company says every year. Starting with iPhone XS, it is a year-over-year upgrade to the iPhone X, so it retains the 5.8-inch OLED display (2436x1125, 458ppi), Face ID (now with faster respond times) and dual rear cameras. The iPhone XS is IP68 rated, and the display now features better dynamic range, and there is improved stereo sound compared to last year. Powering the smartphone is a new 7nm Apple A12 Bionic processor (6.9 billion transistors)... Read more...
