Looking for a new hard drive enclosure, perhaps one that understands USB 3.0? You're in lucky. Super Talent has just announced a new USB 3.0 Storage POD that will bring your existing HDD into the world of SuperSpeed with this DIY kit. You simply pop any 2.5" HDD or SSD into the kit, and then take advantage of the USB 3.0 connector if you have a computer with a USB 3.0 socket. Pretty simple, no? This case is particularly useful for those who are upgrading the drive in their notebook, and thus, are left with a 2.5" drive that now has no home. Pop that guy in here, and you've just created a fast, pocket-friendly external storage solution. The POD itself is just $29, and it's shipping right now.... Read more...

How big of hands do you need? Not Shaq-sized, that's for sure. It has a pair of 2.5" SSDs or HDDs, so not even full desktop-size drives. Featuring a pair of 2.5" drives in a Mac OS RAID configuration, the Little Big Disk delivers stunning read speeds more than 480MB/s in SSD and up to 190MB/s in HDD. The more Little Big Disks you chain together,... Read more...
We may have just rounded up the best 3TB drives for your desktop expansion needs, but since bigger is always around the corner, G-Technology is wasting no time in showing off a new two-drive 8TB G-RAID solution for those who just can't archive enough. The company has selected IBC in Amsterdam as the launch pad for their new G-Technology by Hitachi 4TB-based storage solutions, a two-drive RAID 0 device that comes formatted for Mac that can easily be switched over for PC users. Best of all, there's a model that will ship with Apple's Thunderbolt I/O port, promising (theoretical) data transfer rates up to 10 Gbps. At 8TB, this is also the highest capacity, two-drive, RAID 0 external storage device... Read more...
Somebody had to go and be the first to ship a 4TB external hard drive, and someone at Seagate sat around one day thinking, "Hey, why not us?" Why not indeed, and so Seagate today becomes the first to ship such an enormous amount of storage in an external drive. The company's new 4TB GoFlex Desk external hard drive is sleek, a little bit sexy, and ready to handle a mountain of data. When we reviewed our first 3TB hard drive almost a year ago, the market wasn't quite ready for the huge storage capacity being made available. Fully compatible motherboards featuring the unified extensible firmware interface (UEFI) were still months away, and having to use a separate host bus adapter (HBA) card was inconvenient and added extra cost. But a year brings a lot of changes to the technology landscape. UEFI-equipped boards are prevalent, starting with P67 based products and spreading to the latest Intel Z68 chipset as well. Many of AMD's 990FX motherboards also sport UEFI. If you're building a new system any time soon, we've got good news for you. Chances are your mainboard will... Read more...
One terabyte hard drives aren't nearly as novel as they once were, but that doesn't mean that you still won't want one if it's plopped in front of you. On the mobile front, however, they're a bit more rare and special compared to the desktop side, where we're up to 3TB these days. While 1TB laptop hard drives have existed, most have existed in a non-traditional 12.5mm shell -- that means that you'd need a monster of a laptop to even have enough room to fit one inside. But if you aren't up for buying a Clevo or another one of those beasts, Toshiba has managed to stuff 1TB of space into a traditional 9.5mm form factor. That means that pretty much any notebook out there could accept one as an upgrade.... Read more...

Western Digital's about to get bizzy. Silly pun and all, the real deal is that WD is about to enter the small business market in a big way, with small office storage servers leading the way. They'll be teaming with Microsoft in order to "simplify workgroup sharing and data protection," and of course, Windows Storage Server 2008 R2 Essentials will be the OS onboard. According to WD, the fruit of the partnership will be a product that simplifies connection, protection and collaboration online for small businesses and the information technology services organizations that support them. What's interesting is that there doesn't seem to actually be any indication of what's on deck for these two. The... Read more...
Backup hard drives are a dime a dozen these days, but Clickfree has something that none of those others have: guaranteed no-click backups with some of the slickest software doing it. These drives probably aren't the best for power users who love to manually initiate every process that happens on their PC, but for average consumers who just want things done in a hurry, it's ideal. The company's new C6 EASY Imaging drive is their newest one, offered in both laptop and desktop versions. The portable drives are 500GB ($140) and 1TB ($180) in size, and run entirely off of a USB connection. The desktop version is available in 1TB ($150) and 2TB ($180), and both of these rely on EASY Run technology... Read more...
LaCie and Porsche, together at last? We can't say we ever really expected these two names to join forces in any significant way, but they have, and the result is nothing short of stunning. Both of these companies are well known for amazing design, and now that they're working together, it's just easy to love what's coming out of their collaborative efforts. The two just launched an exclusive P´9000 electronics category: the LaCie Porsche Design Mobile (P'9220) and Desktop (P'9230) Hard Drives. Both of these rely on USB 3.0 and feature aluminum frames and 'purist designs.' In fact, the two have worked together off and on since 2003, and these just so happen to be the newest fruits of their... Read more...
Rugged is the name of the game these days, particularly when it comes to portable hard drives. It seems as if every major company is now looking to put out a rugged drive, with their stamp of approval to boot. Western Digital is no different, and this week they're introducing the WD Nomad. It's actually a rugged case, which protects the company's popular My Passport line of devices. It's angled at photographers and outdoorsy folk who tend to drop and dent their equipment more often than not, and providing a case (as opposed to a fully encapsulated HDD) is certainly a new and appreciated twist. The WD Nomad rugged case features a polycarbonate exterior and shock-absorbing elastomer cushion inside.... Read more...
New portable hard drives seem to be popping up today at a blistering pace, but one thing most of 'em can't handle is severe drop. That's where Clickfree's newest drive comes in. The company's auto-backup line is gaining a new member this week, with the introduction of the C2 Rugged. This toughened-up drive claims to be the planet's only rugged portable drive with "automatic set-up and installation." It's built to U.S. military standards, and will continue to operate after drops from as high as four feet. The drive contains an EasyRun feature that will automatically start, search, organize and backup a user's data whenever it's connected to a Mac or PC. All a person needs to do is plug the Clickfree... Read more...
Is it a hard drive? Or is it a media streamer? Or is it both? The answer, believe it or not, is "C." Seagate has just created a totally wild new portable hard drive, which not only holds 500GB of storage and ships with a GoFlex adapter and a USB 3.0 cable, but also has a built-in 802.11b/g/n Wi-Fi module that enables it to serve media (photos, videos, music, etc.) to any device with a web browser. The company's shipping it with an iOS app that works with iPod touch, iPhone and iPad, but Android devices and PCs/Macs are supported as well so long as there's a web browser ready to be used. It's called the first battery-powered external hard drive to wirelessly extend the storage capacity of any... Read more...

Solid State Drives are popular among power users and are commonly used in high-end machines but by and large, they're absent from the average Joe's computer due to their higher price tag. Gartner expects this could change in 2012 however as the price of SSDs decreases. By the second half of 2012, Gartner predicts that mainstream PC SSDs will decrease to $1 per gigabyte. Once SSDs reach this lower price, Gartner expects more and more consumers will begin to use SSDs. Although SSDs offer many benefits, including a smaller form factor, faster performance, and additional power efficiency compared to traditional hard drives, their higher price has largely kept them from the majority of consumers'...
