Are you starting to run low on storage space? Before you bite the bullet and pay an inflated price for another hard drive to store your expanding collection of lolcats or whatever else it is that's hogging your HDD, you might want to consider hanging tight for another month. If you can, you could end up saving as much as 10 percent on your HDD purchase. According to news and rumor site DigiTimes, the Taiwan market is getting ready to drop the price of hard drives by around 10 percent at the end of April. It's a move that, in part, is intended to promote sales, as buyers have been hesitant to stock up on storage ever since severe flooding in Thailand disrupted the HDD manufacturing business and... Severe floods in Thailand in late 2011 left the hard drive industry in a bad spot. It's the place where manufacturers and component suppliers come together, and when flooding occurred, HDD manufacturing came to a near halt. As a result, there was a subsequent shortage of hard drives, which itself led to higher prices that still linger today. Is there any relief in sight? The answer is yes, sort of. According to DigiTimes, global HDD production capacity is getting ready to increase to 140-145 million units in the first quarter of 2012, or about 80 percent of where it was prior to when the flooding hit. Choose your weapon: Price hikes for hard drives makes it easier to justify spending a premium... Read more...

For the six months ended on the same day, Seagate says it collected revenue of $6 billion and returned $151 million to shareholders in the form of a dividend. Not too shabby when you consider severe floods in Thailand left the hard drive industry in shambles. Unfortunately for Joe Consumer, relief is hardly in sight. In a supplementary note (PDF) discussing its quarterly results, Seagate warned that the impact of the floods on the hard drive industry will be felt throughout the entire year. "Seagate believes that... Read more...

This isn't new news, and it shouldn't be a shock to historians, but every now and then, it's really good to reach back and grab some perspective. The SSD or HDD that you're probably using now will look like a relic in just a decade, but look at what a 5MB hard drive looked like in 1956. IBM's 305 RAMAC was considered to be the first "super" computer with an HDD, and the HDD module alone weighed over a ton and wouldn't hold enough information to send a single JPG image from most DSLRs. Wow.... Read more...
Word around the Web is that some hard drive makers are cutting down their warranty terms, the timing of which couldn't be any worse (we'll get to that in a minute). Western Digital is dropping the distribution warranty period for Caviar Blue, Caviar Green, and Scorpio Blue drives from 3 years to 2 years (Caviar Black and Scorpio Black will still carry 5-year warranties). News of Western Digital's reduced warranty terms was first reported by The Register, which got its hands on the following letter: This new warranty policy will be effective for drives shipped from January 2nd, 2012. It is important that you take a moment to update your website(s) and collateral to reflect this change for effected... Read more...

Word to the wise -- if you find a killer deal on a mechanical hard drive and you need more storage, go ahead and pounce. As you're probably well aware by now, recent flooding in Thailand hit the hard drive industry pretty hard, and that's been resulting in higher prices all around. It's also causing a shortage of HDDs, and by extension, a shortfall in PC shipments. According to market research firm IHS iSuppli, there will be a 3.8 million unit shortfall in PC shipments in the first quarter of 2012 compared to the previous IHS forecast issued in August, and it's a direct result of the hard drive situation. Before you panic and write off PCs, understand that PC shipments are still expected to grow... Read more...
If you're trying to configure an iMac system to arrive in time for the holiday season, you'll have to cap your storage at 1TB. Next day shipping is available on iMacs with a 1TB mechanical hard drive, 256GB solid state drive, or 1TB HDD + 256GB SSD from the Apple Store, but if you choose one of the 2TB HDD options, you'll have to wait 5-7 weeks for it to ship. That would put the arrival date at anywhere from the middle to end of January. Such a long lead time isn't par for course when ordering an iMac, but apparently even Apple can't escape the ripple effects of recent flooding in Thailand. The overseas floods ravaged the hard drive industry, ultimately resulting in a shortage of HDDs, higher... Read more...
Multiple motherboard manufacturers are warning that precipitously rising HDD prices will impact their sales. Gigabyte has issued guidance that it now expects Q4 shipments to fall by 20 -25 percent, while Asustek predicts a much smaller decline of ~five percent. Analysts believe Asus is underestimating the impact of the price increases, and think the company's sales could fall as much as ten percent. This would be in line with guidance from MSI, ECS, and Asrock. Exposure to the shortage will vary depending on the degree to which a manufacturer relies on retail sales and the price points of their various products. The impact on budget boards in the retail channel, for example, is likely to be catastrophic.... Read more...

We'd sprinkle salt on ice cream if we thought it would improve the flavor the way it does with almost everything else on the planet. The fact that table salt isn't a food group does nothing to diminish our affection for this essential ingredient (sorry, doc), but did you know it also makes hard drives better? As trippy as that sounds, Dr. Joel Yang from the Institute of Materials Research and Engineering (IMRE), a research institute of Singapore's Agency of Science, Technology, and Research (A*STAR), along with collaborators from the National University of Singapore (NUS) and the Data Storage Institute (DSI), came up with a way to increase HDD capacities six-fold using sodium chloride, the chemical... Today, WD announced that it is halting the production of hard drives in its facilities close to Bangkok, Thailand due to severe flooding. Although the company's employees are safe and the facilities are operational, the flooding has created problems with the region's infrastructure including transportation and utilities. WD says it is currently working with its suppliers to maximize throughput and availability of parts, but it's too early to say how much of an impact this will have on the production of hard drives. WD Reports Impact on HDD Production Due to Severe Flooding in Thailand IRVINE, Calif., Oct. 12, 2011 /PRNewswire via COMTEX/ -- Western Digital Corp. (NYSE: WDC) today announced that... Read more...
Outside of Hollywood, lasers mounted on sharks is a technology that may never be realized. But in hard drives? The mad scientists at TDK on working on this very thing, and once completed, it has the potential to more than double the capacity of today's hard drives. This isn't a theoretical technology that's still years or decades away, but one that will manifest in shipping drives by late next year, according to reports. The mechanical hard drive sitting in your rig at home utilizes rotating platters. In order to read and write data to and from the platters, a magnetic head gets as close as it can with crashing into them. It's pretty remarkable when you get into the science of it all, but also...
