Google Fiber is, in a word, awesome. In addition to bringing unprecedented Internet speeds to a few lucky areas in Kansas City (at an attractive price point no less), the presence of the service has apparently been attracting startups to the area and has people calling it the “Silicon Prairie”. Google is also on the record as saying that Google Fiber is not just a one-off thing; it will spread to more locales and will no doubt foster growth in those places, as well. There’s never been a better time to live in the Hanover Heights area of Kansas City. That’s the lucky “fiberhood” that will be the first to receive Google Fiber, which will deliver one gigabit Internet speeds. Google says that construction will begin within a few weeks. After Hanover Heights, Google is planning to install Google Fiber in 179 additional KC neighborhoods, with the last one--the Lykins North area--getting the speedy service a year or so from now. Midwest livin’ has never been so good. In addition to a cost of living that would make any east- or west-coaster faint with jealousy, Kansas City was the lucky winner of the Google Fiber sweepstakes. KC was the first city to test out Google’s 1Gbps network, the fastest Internet service available. Google, with its constant Manifest Destiny-like expansion into more tech territories, has surely been looking to add services to its Internet offering relating to its Google TV; now, it appears that the search giant has indeed taken a step in that direction.
