There has been a massive cloud of negativity swirling around Tesla over the past few months as it ramps up production of the Model 3 mainstream EV. Over the weekend, CEO Elon Musk revealed that a [now former] employee admitted to "extensive and damaging sabotage" to the company.  Today, Tesla has filed formal action against the former employee, Martin Tripp, in a lawsuit. The lawsuit, which was filed in a Nevada district court, alleges that Tripp wrote software to hack into the Tesla's proprietary manufacturing operating system (MOS) at its Nevada Gigafactory facility. This software then transferred "several gigabytes of Tesla data" to third-parties not associated with... Read more...
Tesla Motors is working feverishly to finish constructing its $5 billion, 3,200 acre "Gigafactory" located outside Sparks, Nevada (near Reno). It's already semi-operational with 1,000 construction workers toiling away seven days a week in two shifts. The factory, which is two years ahead of schedule, will help meet what's anticipated to be high demand for lithium-ion batteries for Tesla's not-yet-released Model 3 sedan. "We have to be ready with cell and pack production well ahead of vehicle production," JB Straubel, Tesla’s chief technical officer and co-founder, told The Wall Street Journal during a walk-through of the factory. "We’re accelerating our construction plans and accelerating our... Read more...
Tesla has just made it official that its much-anticipated Gigafactory will have its grand opening on July 29th. The company itself hasn't issued a public statement on this event, but invites have already been sent out to Tesla owners and others in Tesla's good graces. To say that those who get invited by Tesla is an exclusive club would be an understatement. To qualify for the invite, a person had to act as a referrer to at least five others who ultimately ended up purchasing a Model S. Think being able to purchase a Model S is a luxury? Imagine being able to convince five (or more) friends to snatch one up, too! Tesla's Gigafactory 1 should help reduce the cost of its vehicle batteries... Read more...
We’re still well over at year away from the reveal of Tesla’s Model III electric vehicle, and even further away from its official arrival on U.S. streets. However, more details about the vehicle have begun to slip out over the past few months. The latest bit of info is something that never crossed our minds before, but makes complete sense when you think about Tesla’s aim to increase its EV sales and hit more affordable price points. According to Tesla’s chief technical officer, JB Straubel, the Model III lineup won’t just consist of an electric sedan; there will also be a crossover based on the same chassis made available at a later date. While Americans definitely like sedans (and for some... Read more...
Tesla Motors CEO Elon Musk gave Roadster owners some good news this Christmas with further confirmation that a massive battery upgrade is on the way. Musk first mentioned the battery upgrade in an October interview, and hinted that more news would come this week.  On Christmas Day, Musk sent out the following tweet: Roadster upgrade will enable non-stop travel from LA to SF -- almost 400 mile range. Details tmrw. Merry Christmas! — Elon Musk (@elonmusk) December 25, 2014 According to Musk, a trip from Los Angeles to San Francisco (which is roughly 382 miles, and would take you just under 6 hours to complete) would be completely possible with the upgraded Roadster. The current Roadster would... Read more...
Tesla’s proposed “gigafactory”, a massive production facility that would make batteries for the company’s electric cars, is looking for a state to call home, and you can count California among those campaigning hard to be chosen. According to USA Today, the California state legislature is working on a bill to speed an approval process to persuade Tesla to come to the state; this follows an earlier measure designed to give Tesla property tax breaks. Model S Other states in the mix include Arizona, Nevada, New Mexico, and Texas. KTVU in Concord, CA reports that one nagging problem for California is that one area where the gigafactory could be built is actually a Superfund... Read more...
No one can accuse Tesla’s founder Elon Musk of thinking too small, and his latest vision is for a monstrous “gigafactory” to make batteries (at a reduction in cost of about 30%) that will not only power electric Tesla cars but would also serve any number of other applications in various industries. According to the San Jose Mercury News, Musk told a crowd this week that Panasonic among other companies will partner with Tesla on the gigafactory, which is expected to cost $5 billion and cover some 10 million square feet of space. It will also employ about 6,500 workers, which should be plenty of incentive for states to encourage Tesla to bring the gigafactory within their borders.... Read more...
