At the time of this writing, the FTC's investigation into Intel's alleged monopolistic abuses is on hold as the government attempts to negotiate a settlement with the CPU and chipset manufacturer. If these negotiations don't result in a deal by July 22, the case returns to court, with arguments currently scheduled to begin on September 15. Intel is no stranger to these sorts of lawsuits; between AMD and the EU, the CPU giant has been battling such allegations for years. The lawsuit between NV and Intel, however, rests on different points than the AMD/Intel allegations. AMD has been pushing "Fusion" for about as long as we can remember, and the idea of merging the CPU and GPU certainly sounds good. Other companies are definitely trying to accomplish similar goals with rivaling technologies, but the main problem for AMD has been producing a working product that can be shipped on existing products. At the Computex show in Taiwan this week, AMD put their biggest stamp of approval yet on Fusion by introduction the Fusion APU technology. One of the more amusing things about being an IT journalist is that, after you've been writing for awhile, you realize that many of the juiciest or interesting rumors don't appear so much as reappear, travelling in and out of the public eye much as a comet orbits a star. In this case, the AMD+Apple chestnut has hoved back into view, with a long tail of juicy speculation flowing out behind it. Q1 was the first quarter AMD reported its results entirely separate from those of GlobalFoundries, and the company's numbers were quite good. Revenue for the quarter was a record-setting $1.57B, the company reported an operating income of $247 million, and an operating profit of $182 million. That's an excellent shift from a year ago, when the company lost $298 million on revenue of just $1.18 billion. The company's gross margin of 47 percent (up two percent from Q4), thanks to a richer product mix. It's been just over a year since AMD completed its spinoff of GlobalFoundries in an attempt to radically change its own financial trajectory. The gamble appears to have paid off for both companies; we recently sat down with GlobalFoundries executives to talk about the company's first year and plans for the future. GlobalFoundries current roadmap is as follows: The company will ship 40nm LP (low power) silicon starting this quarter and 32nm SOI in the back half of 2010. AMD revealed more information on its first Fusion-class product at ISSCC this week. The new chip will combine both a CPU and GPU on a single package, but don't use either nickname—AMD is  calling the new chip an "APU" or Application Processor Unit as part of its bid to shift product focus from the core components in a system to the tasks and workloads a system is capable of handling. Done properly, this could solve certain nomenclature confusions that have plagued the computer market from the very beginning, but we aren't holding our breath. With the International Solid-State Circuits Conference less than a week away, Intel has released additional details on its hexa-core desktop, next generation mobile and dual-core Westmere processors. Much of the dual-core data was revealed last month when the CPU manufacturer launched Clarkdale (our review is here if you want additional information on the CPU and its integrated graphics core). When Intel set its internal goals for what its calling Westmere 6C, the company aimed to boost both core and cache count by 50 percent without increasing the processor's thermal envelope. Data from Jon Peddie Research confirms the positive GPU sales information we've heard from AMD of late, with the GPU market as a whole growing by 14.7 percent in Q4 as compared to Q3, and 10.3 percent for the entire year. Intel led the quarter in both market share and increased unit shipments, thanks partially to the joint impact of Atom chipset sales and its new Clarkdale processors, which JPR is calling CIGs (CPU integrated graphics.) Since Intel effectively owns both categories and Atom's effect on the mobile market has been additive rather than disruptive, Intel's overall volume was boosted for the period in question. Just in time for the imminent release of the Windows XP SP3 update, VMware has released an update to its Mac-based Fusion virtulization application, with full support for SP3 Boot Camp partitions. NVIDIA held a Financial Analyst Day yesterday, where representatives spoke about the company's strengths, market share, technology, and direction.  There was a lot of discussion regarding current products and competition, which seemed to get NVIDIA's CEO Jen-Sun Huang fired up in a way that's not often seen publicly. The always outspoken Jen-Sun really went on the offensive and essentially dismissed CPU-GPU fusion and Intel's upcoming discreet graphics product (codenamed Larrabee).  He also downplayed the erosion of NVIDIA's market share in the mobile segments and promoted the APX 2500 "system on a chip", CUDA, and other NVIDIA initiatives.  Jen-Sun even went so far as to say NVIDIA... Digitimes, using information obtained from motherboard manufacturers, is reporting that TSMC will likely build the GPU portion of AMD's upcoming Fusion processors, while the CPU cores will be made by either AMD themselves or partner Chartered Semiconductor. "AMD's Fusion processor will consist of a GPU manufactured on a 55nm process by TSMC plus a silicon-on-insulator (SOI-) based CPU manufactured on a 45nm process at AMD's Fab 36 and Fab 38 or outsourced to Chartered. A packaging and testing plant will then package the CPU and GPU together as a Fusion processor. AMD may have signed on with TSMC to outsource production of their upcoming Fusion technology.  At present it seems that Fusion will be produced on TSMC’s 45nm process. “JPMorgan projects that TSMC can further expand its technology to CPU manufacturing in the first quarter of 2008 after this field qualification is completed, though any meaningful sales contribution should only be seen in late 2008 or early 2009. Long-term speaking, the equity firm believes that TSMC will have a role to play in next generation game machine CPU manufacturing.” Little is known about Fusion except that it is a technology that is supposed to blend the features of a CPU and a GPU.... DigiTimes reports that AMD is currently developing their next-generation FUSION processors with both standard bulk and Silicon-on-Inusulator (SOI) process technology. Although Chartered Semiconductor is working with AMD on the SOI development many expected, there are reports that TSMC could be selected to produce mainstream FUSION products using standard bulk fab processes. If this is true, you can expect lower overall pricing with a substantial amount of initial volume headed to the channel when compared with products made using the SOI process. The guys over at [H]ard|OCP have gotten their hands on some AMD roadmap slides. The slides make for an interesting read. AMD has given us some more information about Fusion, albeit still a little vague on specifics as to exactly how a stream processing on the GPU would be leveraged. But if you thought CPU and GPU integration onto one die was just about low end computers, AMD is painting a different picture.
