At long last, Motorola's Razr flip phone is back, though getting your hands on one will test your patience. Some preorders have gone out and if you are lucky, you can stroll into a Verizon Wireless store and nab one. Otherwise, you are looking at waiting a few weeks for new orders. In the meantime, there is already a teardown video that highlights the Razr's build flexibility form factor, and what that means for DIY repairs. Before we get to that, let's recap the specs. The Razr boasts a 6.2-inch foldable pOLED display with a 2142x876 resolution (21:9), and a 2.7-inch external display with an 800x600 resolution. These are powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon 710 octa-core processor clocked at 2.2GHz... Read more...
Huawei is taking some extra time to tweak (and possible redesign) its folding Mate X smartphone before it launches. As such, it will no longer launch in September, though Huawei is confident it can get a product shipping to consumers before the end of the year. This latest delay means Samsung can still beat Huawei to the punch. Technically, Samsung already did, though its Galaxy Fold suffered from dire launch issues resulting in it being pulled from the market. Simply stated, the Galaxy Fold was not ready for prime time—multiple reviewers reported screen damage, and a subsequent teardown analysis showed where dust could potentially sneak in and wreak havoc. While there is some benefit to... Read more...
Yesterday, Google announced its Pixel 3a and Pixel 3a XL mid-range smartphones which rock a Qualcomm Snapdragon 670 SoC, 4GB of RAM, 64GB of internal storage and the familiar two-tone design aesthetic (albeit with a plastic body). Best of all, the phones start at an incredibly reasonable $399 and $479 respectively, which has already been discounted by $100 thanks to a promotion running at Best Buy. For those that think that the Pixel 3a and Pixel 3a XL are just a stop-gap measure that will go by the wayside in the blink of an eye (think iPhone SE), Google is indicating that these more affordable Pixels are here to stay. Android Police was recently able to talk with members... At this point, the Samsung Galaxy Fold and the Huawei Mate X are known quantities in the folding Android smartphone realm. But one other top Android OEM, Xiaomi, is also looking to throw its hat in the race. We’ve previously seen the company’s folding smartphone on video, and now the device has returned in newly released footage. The video posted to YouTube is just 10 seconds long, and shows the device first being used in a tablet configuration. Then, the device is rotated 90 degrees and two “wings” of the display fold under, giving it a more compact frame. This “double fold” design is a bit trickier than the “single fold”... Read more...
Will 2019 be the year of folding smartphones? It sure is starting to look that way. Whether consumers take to these new designs remains to be seen, but more than one smartphone maker is at least considering a folding phone. You can count Apple among them, based on a recently published patent application with the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO). The patent application references the existence of flexible display technologies, and that it would be "desirable" to implement them into electronic devices, particularly cellular phones. This, the patent says, would lead to "improved electronic devices." Apple's method for implementing a flexible display into an iPhone involves hinges.... Read more...
A world of faster wireless connectivity awaits as carriers and hardware makers alike forge ahead with 5G roll outs (real 5G roll outs, that is, and not fake ones like 5G Evolution). We expect 5G to be a point of focus at Mobile World Congress, and indeed, LG is planning to introduce 5G phones at the event. Interestingly, however, LG will not be jumping on the folding phone bandwagon in the immediate future. LG President Kwon Bong-Suk recently confirmed as much during a press conference at the LG Science Park in Seoul, South Korea. "During the Consumer Electronics Show in January, LG introduced a rollable TV. This is an advanced technology one step ahead of foldable technology. We have reviewed... Read more...
For a period of time, smartphone makers competed with each other by releasing increasingly bigger handsets. More recently, the focus has shifted to full-front displays, and how to implement (or avoid) the notch that Apple popularized with its iPhone X. Looking ahead, folding phones might be the next frontier, and LG is planning to participate. LG Flex 2 To what extent, we don't know yet. Back in early October, LG Mobile CEO Hwang Jeong-hwan confirmed that the company is working to deliver a folding smartphone to the public, joining companies like Samsung and Huawei, which are both attempting to capitalize on what they hope will be a new trend. LG's mobile boss said his company is in no rush to... Read more...
