For many users, smartphones are tools that are more about the software and user experience than the hardware. Of course, you still need adequate hardware and smooth performance to ensure a good experience, but beyond that, there are plenty of users who are attracted more to software and easy-to-use features than anything else. The HTC First went on sale this past Friday, to coincide with the availability of Facebook Home, the social networking giant’s launcher that puts Facebook content front and center on some Android devices. We’re hard at work cranking out our full review of the HTC First, but while that’s being worked on, we thought some of you would like to see some video of the phone in action. If you’re unfamiliar with Facebook Home, it essentially replaces a phone’s home screen and app launcher with Facebook content that’s pumped in from your feed, and incorporates a handful of new chat-related, notification, and sharing features. HTC worked closely with Facebook... Strange. Bizarre. Odd. Unique. All of those words could be used to describe Facebook's newest advertisement, but "attention-getting" would work as well. Shortly after introducing the HTC First and Facebook Home, the social networking giant is engaging in an advertising blitz across many of the major networks. Aside from being downright curious (and perhaps even uncomfortable), it highlights a trend that's actually pretty important: technology is becoming less and less about hardware, and more about software and the overall experience. While the HTC First is mentioned at the end, the ad in general focuses intently on the experience. If Facebook is your first stop each morning and your final stop... Read more...
There's been talk recently over private browsing features in upcoming browsers such as Internet Explorer 8 and Firefox 3.1 (Safari already has this feature).  Privacy, of course, is an important subject for many end users (despite the somewhat pejorative term "porn mode" frequently used for it).  Well, a new browser has been recently released that --- rather than making this feature an afterthought, focuses directly on privacy as the base of its capabilities. Level 9 Technology, Inc. has launched the ArmorSurf Private Browser - a free web browser & downloader that lets users surf in complete privacy while keeping their files secure. In addition to privacy features, the software... Read more...

Since RealNetworks announced RealDVD (available today, if you are interested), it was obviously there would probably be some kind of legal action.  After all, the product rips DVDs to your hard drive, though it purports to not just maintain the original DRM but in fact adds another layer of protection. Still, most would probably have expected the lawsuit to come from the other direction.Shortly after releasing the RealDVD product today (about an hour or so!) RealNetworks announced a lawsuit against a host of companies: the DVD Copy Control Association, Inc., Disney Enterprises, Inc., Paramount Pictures Corp., Sony Pictures Entertainment, Inc., Twentieth Century Fox Film Corp., NBC Universal,... On Thursday Webkit, the open source browser engine that is notably used in both Safari and Chrome, announced that it is the first browser engine to fully pass the Web Standards Project (WaSP) Acid3 test. In late March Webkit announced it had achieved "most" of the Acid3 test, with the only missing issue the fact that part of the Acid3 test is that the animation during the test must be "smooth." That same month, another engine, Presto, achieved the 100/100 rendering below, but it still has not achieved "smooth" animation. As you can see in the results dialog which you receive by clicking on the “A” in Acid3, there is confirmation that Webkit indeed passed the smooth animation condition on a 2.4GHz... Read more...

Firefox 3 has just barely gotten out the door and Mozilla is already readying the alpha release of the next version, 3.1. Of course, as a point-release, it will be a much less ambitious project than the leap from 2 -> 3. In Firefox 3.1 status meeting notes from 6/24, the ship date is now estimated to be Q4 of this year or Q1 09. First alpha is in July, while first beta is in August. The release date is close to what had previously been stated by Mozilla. They had earlier said, however, that it would be date-driven, and it looks like a little flexibility has been added to that. Earlier Mozilla had also said the features in FF 3.1 would consist of those that had missed FF 3 but were nearly complete.... Read more...
