Given that Qualcomm is the dominant force in the Android realm when it comes to mobile SoCs, it’s easy to forget that there are other competitors out there like Samsung’s Exynos family and offerings from MediaTek. MediaTek raised eyebrows last year with its flagship Dimensity 1000 flagship SoC that offered an integrated 5G modem, and today, the company is announcing an update to that chip called the Dimensity 1000+. While this is not a complete architectural overhaul, its “+” suffix does bring with it some welcome enhancements over the standard Dimensity 1000. For starters, there is now support for 144Hz displays, which should make the SoC more appealing to smartphone... Read more...
Cheating in synthetic benchmarks is an old practice; one that has been uncovered and litigated many times over through the years. Most recently, Huawei was caught gaming the system with a number of its smartphones (3DMark scores were inflated by as much as 47 percent), after which it apologized and ended the practice. Now it’s time for MediaTek to have its feet held to the fire over alleged benchmark cheating. This latest reporting comes to us from AnandTech, which discovered that MediaTek is up to some funny business when it comes to the Helio P95 SoC, which is used in the European market Oppo Reno3 Pro smartphone. The Helio P95 is nearly identical to its predecessor, the... Read more...
BlackBerry (via TCL) was the last major OEM that attempted to include a workable physical keyboard in a modern Android smartphone. However, a relative newcomer to the game -- Planet Computers -- is looking to spread some physical QWERTY goodness around the world with the Astro Slide. The highlight of the Astro Slide is definitely the physical keyboard, which slides out from under the display. Although we've all pretty much grown accustomed to on-screen keyboards after the iPhone first popularized them in 2007, there are still those that clamor for the nostalgic charm of individual, physical keys. The keyboard on the Astro Slide is even backlit for nighttime typing sessions. Rather than going... Read more...
Yesterday, we revealed that Intel and MediaTek are working together to bring standalone MediaTek 5G modems to PCs starting in early 2021. Today, MediaTek is following up on that news with the official announcement of the Dimensity 1000 SoC for mobile devices, which includes an integrated 5G modem. The Dimensity 1000 is an all-new design with an octa-core configuration. In this case, MediaTek is using four high-performance Cortex-A77 cores (@ 2.6GHz) and four Cortex A55 efficiency cores (@ 2GHz). According to MediaTek, the CPU can be paired with up to 16GB of LPDDR4x memory, and there is apparently no support for the faster and more efficient LPDDR5 spec. The CPU is backed by a Mali-G77... There are have been multiple reports and predictions by analysts that Apple will soon launch an augmented reality headset, or perhaps a set of AR glasses. And maybe it will. However, a new report based on supposed inside information states Apple is targeting an AR headset launch in 2022, followed by AR glasses in 2023. The time frame puts Apple's play in the AR hardware category much further out than previously thought. Analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, for example, predicted in a recent research note that Apple would roll out its own-branded AR glasses by 2020, followed by the long rumored Apple Car in 2023. But at least one of those might be off target. According to a paywalled article at The Information,... Read more...
