AMD has quietly introduced a new series of Radeon-branded DDR3-based system memory products, targeted at a wide swath of system types. AMD says, “AMD Radeon DDR3 System Modules are ideally suited to our CPU and APU products. Components are tested to the highest industry standards on AMD platforms to guarantee reliability and performance.” According to the product page on AMD’s website, AMD Radeon system memory will be offered in three series: Entertainment, ULTRA PRO, and Enterprise. Toshiba this week announced that it has developed double data rate (DDR) Toggle Mode NAND flash memory for use in solid state drives (SSDs), and there's good reason you should care. According to Toshiba, its 32nm DDR Toggle Mode chips will significantly improve performance in both MLC- and SLC-based SSDs compared to conventional asynchronous NAND memory, while at the same time offer up lower power consumption over competing synchronous DDR NAND products. Getting down the technical nitty gritty, Toshiba claims its new chips can shuffle data around at 133 megatransfers per second (MT/s), which is more than three times the 40MT/s of current generation SLC chips. Information on a supposed DRAM breakthrough has been running hot across the wires, but the press release from Semiconductor Research Corporation (SRC) that's sparked techie interest across the Internet is a tad misleading. There's nothing factually incorrect regarding the group's achievement (at least not as far as we know), but the gap between where we are today and a commercially viable FeDRAM design is much, much wider than implied. We can't say for certain, but it sure feels like Rambus is doing its best to redirect attention away from its recent legal tussle with NVIDIA and onto more, shall we say, positive matters. Just a day after NVIDIA made clear that Rambus had withdrawn its complaints in court, the California-based memory maker announced that it had shipped over 100 million of its XDR DRAM modules worldwide. We aren't mathematicians by trade, but 100 million sure isn't anything to scoff at. Since the great DRAM price plummet of 2007, memory prices continue to be extremely low. It's currently possible to pick up high capacity memory modules for very respectable prices. As the DRAM market is highly volatile, however, it's possible that we could see prices jump within the next month, week, or even by the day. However, it has been about a year since prices dropped, and things have yet to "recover", allowing prices to remain low. Regardless, continues to be a fairly good time to buy system memory. There is no way to categorize AMD's recent launch of the RV770 graphics processor powering the Radeon HD 4800 series of cards as anything other than a resounding success. Cards based on the GPU hit the scene offering very strong performance in their respective price brackets, and forced rival NVIDIA to react with a quick round of price cuts that will surely eat into NVIDIA's margins on the gigantic 65nm GT200 chip. Although actual sales figures aren't available just yet, we suspect AMD is going to show strong sales of every member of the Radeon HD 4800 series. Just weeks away from the rumored public debut of AMD's new ATI Radeon 4000-series GPUs, AMD clues us in on a tantalizing tidbit about a key technology found in its next generation graphics cards. AMD's new lineup of graphics cards will not only use Graphics Double Data Rate 5 (GDDR5) memory, but AMD also claims that this will actually be "the first commercial implementation" of the technology. As many of you are no doubt aware, Intel is planning to officially release a new mainstream chipset in a few weeks, the P45.  From a feature standpoint, the new P45 is somewhat similar to last year's P35.  The P45, however, will have official support for PCI Express 2.0, with a more flexible lane configuration for multi-GPU graphics, and the chipset itself is being manufactured at 65nm as opposed to 90nm.  Using the more advanced process to build the chips should result in lower power consumption and lower operating temperatures as well.  The P45 will also be paired up with a new ICH10-series southbridge, which is similar to the ICH9 sans a few legacy features.Asus...
