The Samsung Galaxy Note Edge popularized the notion of curved displays on smartphones, and the feature has proliferated on Android smartphones in the years that have followed. Oppo is taking the curved display concept to the extreme with what it is calling the Waterfall Screen. The curve of the display extends much further down along the sides of this smartphone concept at 88 degrees on both right- and left-hand sides. The immediate effect of the dramatic curvature is that when looked at directly from the front, it dramatically minimizes the appearance of the side bezels.  Oppo Waterfall Screen (R) One other consequence of this display arrangement is that there don't appear to be any buttons... In more recent years, Apple has not been afraid to tweak the physical design of the iPhone, finally introducing larger display options and, more recently, going with an all-front display (save for that annoying notch at the top). So what comes next? Well, rumor has it Apple is working towards curved panels with touch-free gesture controls to differentiate the iPhone from other premium smartphones on the market. Citing "people with knowledge of the matter," Bloomberg says the future iPhone model would allow users to perform tasks by moving their finger close to the display, without actually making contact with the panel or having to physically tap to screen. One benefit, we suppose, would be a... Read more...
It wouldn’t be CES without a sea of hot new monitors from Samsung. This year, Samsung is showing off three curved monitors – one of which is being billed as the first frameless curved monitor in the world. Curved TVs aren’t entirely new, and the feature is finding its way into more monitors. Samsung CF591 The edgeless Samsung CF591 is the real head-turner, with a noticeable 1800R curvature. One of the chief complaints users have about curved screens is limited viewing angles. If you sit in the wrong position in front of certain curved screens, you can’t see the screen well. But Samsung says the CF591 has a 178-degree viewing angle, giving you (and friends or colleagues)... Read more...
Samsung teased us with its curvaceous ATIV One 7 Curved All-in-One desktop PC just ahead of the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in Las Vegas, a rather attractive looking system (from the pictures we've seen) that was scheduled to hit store shelves in the first quarter of this year. In keeping with that promise, the ATIV One 7 is now available to order direct from Samsung for $1,300.The star of the show here is the 27-inch Full HD 1080p (1920x1080) curved display. It's perched on top of a metal stand and features what Samsung calls a metallic deco frame. Admittedly, there's a bit of tech sex appeal in the design, though there's no mention of whether the display is rocking a high-quality In-Plane... Read more...
We’re inching closer to the March debut of Samsung’s next generation flagship smartphone, and the rumors and reports on specs are coming in at a furious pace. The latest report from Bloomberg confirms what we’ve been hearing for quite some time: there will be two versions of the flagship Galaxy S6. The publication says that one model will have a display that covers three sides, which backs up a previous report and leaked renders which shows a curved display on both the right- and left-hand side of the device. This is a departure from the Galaxy Note 4, which is only curved on the right-hand side. Due to production constraints with delivering a smartphone with two curved edges, the so-called Galaxy... After all the hype surrounding flexible, unbreakable, and curved displays, we're finally seeing a portion of those promises headed to retail. Last week, for example, Samsung announced the Galaxy Round with a 5.7-inch Full HD Super AMOLED curved display. Not to be outdone, press photos of LG's upcoming Flex G with a 6-inch OLED curved panel have been leaked to the web. Several sites have confirmed the LG G Flex is real, including The Verge, which claims that LG is hoping to launch its curvaceous smartphone sometime in November, after Google's Nexus 5 launches. Details are mostly non-existent at this point, such as the remaining hardware, price, which market the G Flex will make its debut in, and... Read more...
