Intel is in the process of spring cleaning: After updating its product portfolio this week, the chipmaker is phasing out five Xeon processors built around the Conroe and Yorkfield cores in order to make room for its Nehalem core-based Xeons. All of the Xeons on the chopping block have 1333MHz front side busses. The two parts with X in the product number are 45nm, 95-watt Yorkfield parts, while the three without are 65nm, 65-watt Conroes. First tier manufacturers like Dell and HP are going to be the only ones with Conroe for at least another week. The Inquirer is reporting that Intel has told it's distributors not to sell Conroe chips except to a select few manufacturers considered to be "tier one". Retailers' orders won't be honored until August 7th at the earliest, which means Conroe won't be widely available on retail shelves for at least another week. "System integrators are incandescent with fury because even though they ordered Core Dual 2 chips from distributors weeks ago, they're being told they'll have to join a queue while Dell and HP get the pick of the crop." ...

By now, we've all seen how Conroe performs. However, all the Conroe reviews circulating around the 'net have been centered around 32-bit applications where the Conroe is clearly king. Some people have taken note of this and many concerns about Conroe's 64-bit performance have been raised. The guys over at X-bit take a look at how the Conroe matches up to AMD in the 64-bit arena in an attempt to find some answers. The gang at HKEPC have received final word from their sources regarding the dramatic price cuts AMD will be using to compete with Intel's new Conroe CPU. As of July 24th, AMD will be dropping the price of its current flagship Athlon 64 FX-62 CPU an impressive 22.5% brining the total cost down from $999 to $799. Even more impressively, we find the Athlon 64 X2 5000+ dropping from $649 to an unbelievable $282! Not content to fight Intel simply with cost, AMD will debut the first 3GHz K8 CPU with the launch of the Athlon 64 FX-64 in Q4 this year. The Inquirer is reporting that Intel has changed the launch date for Conroe once again. This time moving it up to the 14th of July, just over a week from now. This comes as good news to those of us eagerly awaiting Intel's latest offering. Conroe, the code name for the desktop variant of the upcoming Intel Core 2 Duo, is Intel's 8th generation x86 processor architecture. It will replace the aging NetBurst architecture, which has powered Intel's processors since the turn of the century. The Core 2 Duo will also mark the retirement of the Pentium brand name, which has represented Intel's processors since 1993. The Inquirer goes on to speculate...

There are no benchmarks and almost no commentary other than a description of a few pictures, but the crew at TBreak is claiming they've got QuadSLI up and running on Intel's upcoming P965 chipset. Just in case you're wondering, this feat was the result of some driver "tweaks". Don't expect NVIDIA to support SLI or QuadSLI on non-NVIDIA chipsets anytime soon. ...

Athlon Rumor Mill has posted some exceptional information regarding AMD's upcoming Rev G processors. Somehow, the editor managed to obtain die shots of both a current Revision F processor as well as an upcoming Revision G CPU. An animated clip overlays the two images and reveals the fact that there are some significant architectural changes. The wild card here is the use of two different stains in the die shots, a fact which can make the same objects look radically different. Regardless, the animation does seem to hint at some major changes though we'll wait for official word from AMD before we dive further into this rumor....

Somehow, the gang over at HKEPC still manage to get their hands on sensitive information and today have posted some preliminary pricing from Intel for their upcoming products including Conroe. Looking at the first slide they have posted from an Intel presentation, we see the "Extreme Edition" of Conroe coming in at a wallet-crushing $999. However, we do see prices drop considerably for the remainder of the processor family as we find models as low as $183. If you're in the market for a new CPU, you'd best start saving those pennies. ...

It seems that the folks at HKEPC were able to get a Conroe CPU up and running on an entry level AsRock motherboard powered by the aged i865 chipset. Nested within a story on DigiTimes which covered the financial aspect of the last few months in the motherboard industry, there is a blurb regarding the launch of Intel's Conroe CPU. Apparently, motherboard vendors are looking towards a launch in the third quarter meaning that Intel would likely have a healthy performance advantage over AMD until they release their new architecture in the first half of 2007. According to sources at motherboard makers, Intel is scheduled to roll out the E6000 family of processors (codenamed Conroe) - the E6300 at US$209, E6400 at US$241, E6600 at US$316 and the E6700 at US$530 - to replace the Pentium D900 dual-core CPUs. Victor Wang has posted some interesting infomration over at XtremeSystems regarding Intel's upcoming Conroe processor. Using a Conroe sample running at 2.4GHz and an Intel 965G motherboard, he was able to run a healthy suite of benchmarks and has posted the results for your viewing pleasure. Should the retail processors provide similar performance, we are going to see some incredible new levels of performance....

Anandtech has posted a very interesting follow-up to their initial Conroe CPU benchmarks. This new article includes results taken from Anand's own custom benchmarks and not the Intel-created demos used in the previous article. Somewhat surprisingly, the new Conroe CPU still retains its almost obscene performance advantage seemingly indicating that there were no tricks behind the stunning results Intel was already showcasing. Should these results be legit, the only question which remains is when and how much?The performance picture with regards to Conroe hasn't really changed all that much - on average we're still seeing a bit over a 20% increase in performance over an overclocked Athlon 64 FX-60....

Intel's keynote address for this morning was filled to the brim with juicy tid-bits of information on the company's upcoming dual-core processor platform for the Desktop, that will launch later this year under the Intel "Core" branding.
