Well, the Boxee Box seems to be getting better and better. As the updates continue to fly in, MOG's highly-regarded music streaming service is now being served on D-Link's media streamer. This is the first on-demand music service to bundle music and radio in HD for TVs that the Boxee Box supports. The new app brings 320kbps music to a box that for many is already be hooked to a sound system, and listeners can now enjoy MOG's HQ audio through this new living room offering, featuring a wireless remote keypad for quick searches of MOG's 11.5-million song catalog on a user's connected TV. MOG is available from Boxee's App Library, and the onscreen instructions quickly walk users through connecting... Read more...
Ah, Boxee Box. The little media streaming box that could. The D-Link box, which has officially been on sale for a few months now, has been improved on a fairly regular basis. A ton of new features have been added in recent months, and this month's no different. Version 1.1 of the Boxee Box firmware has just shipped, revamping a lot of stuff under the hood. Things like? Things like support for 16 new languages, bookmark + history in the browser, a revised Movie trailer library, new seek bar for playback of the on-screen display, a new share menu that allows users to choose where messages go, and faster browser / web page loading. There's even support for NFO files, too. Some users of the new firmware,... Read more...
Free flowing bandwidth; it's an enabler. There was a time when no one had cable modems or DSL lines. Remember that? Alright, fair enough, neither do we. Regardless, having a 10Mb+ data connection to your domicile is a thing of beauty, because there's obviously so much you can do with it. The question becomes not so much what the cable or telecom companies tell you, or sell to you, with respect to what you can do with it, but rather what a little imagination, and some optimized hardware and software can do with it. And that's exactly the premise by which service platforms like Roku, Apple TV, Google TV and Boxee were born, though Boxee was a bit of a pioneer in the space with the introduction... Read more...

It's been a long time coming! One of the biggest, if not the biggest, requests for the Boxee Box has been the inclusion of Netflix support. The Box has seen some amazing success, but without Netflix, it has lagged behind Roku's boxes and the Apple TV, among others. Finally, after a long wait, the issues have been worked out and support has been added. Avner Ronen, company CEO, had this to say: "We are happy to announce that TV shows and movies streaming instantly from Netflix are now available on the Boxee Box by D-Link in the US and Canada. Netflix support was the most common request we had on our blog comments, forum posts, tweets, etc.  We heard you loud and clear. We were bummed that... Read more...
The Boxee Box is still missing one major piece: Netflix. But that's better than missing two major pieces. Most of the streaming set-top box competition provides access to both Netflix and Vudu, and the latest Boxee Box firmwaer now provides access to the latter. Vudu is yet another movie rental service, but it differs from most by offering higher quality streams. Up to 1080p, in fact. If you've been enjoying your Boxee Box, but have been hoping for a bit more content, the newest update is sure to please. If you've been really on top of these updates, you'll notice that Boxee actually pushed out and then pulled back an update last week. The company took some time to iron out a few issues, and... We're still waiting on peace in the Middle East, but in the meantime, D-Link is coming through with perhaps the next best thing -- the awesome Boxee Box. Starting in January, the Boxee Box will expand its reach into both the Middle East and Africa, letting parts of the rest world know what all the fuss is about. The funky looking Boxee Box is one of the better media streamers out there, particularly after the latest update which fixed a boatload of issues (you can read about them here). Some of the apps and content providers baked in include the BBC, Last.fm, CNET, CNN, Channel 4, Comedy Central, Facebook, ITV, MTV Music, mySPaceTV, YouTube, Flickr, and Picasa. Full press release below. D-Link... Read more...
The Boxee Box, produced by D-Link, has been in the hands of consumers for just over two weeks now. The product was delayed a few times, but now that it's out there, the competition is probably looking at it for a newly set bar. But as with any brand new product, bugs and problems are sure to be present, big or small. Leader Avner Ronen has now posted an update thanking users for using the Box and providing them with bug reports, complaints, praises, feature suggestions, etc. In order to give thanks properly, Boxee is today releasing the Boxee Box's first firmware update. A two-week turnaround is pretty great for something this significant, and this new update promises "numerous bug fixes and... Read more...
It's November 10th. Know what that means? It means that you're over Hump Day, and it also means that the Boxee Box is now shipping in North America. But the fun isn't stopping there. In an unusual move, Boxee has actually chosen the ship date of its Boxee Box launch to unveil a slew of new features that will definitely tempt you into buying one. The only question is this: why not announce these features months ago before you went and purchased a competing product? We aren't saying everyone has already sunk money into a streamer by now, but quite a few probably went out and selected a Roku or Apple TV in the past couple of months. Now, maybe they should have waited. The Boxee Box just gained a... Read more...
The media streamer market has really become crowded as of late, with the new Apple TV, a few new Roku boxes and tons of lesser-known products coming to light. It's clear that the Web is the next big portal for content, and now Boxee is hoping to enjoy some of this market with the Boxee Box, produced by D-Link. The Box itself has been announced and floating around for the better part of this year, but a ship date kept slipping and slipping. Now the slipping is over. Boxee has today announced that November 10th will mark the day in which the first Boxee Box units begin shipping. Those who pre-ordered via Amazon in the U.S. will see their Boxee Box units as early as Nov. 11, as will those in Canada... Read more...
The little HTPC (Home Theater PC) and media center software start-up, Boxee, has been making a splash on the web scene since it first debuted in public beta back in January 2010.  The software was developed in an effort for cross-platform support and as such, has received a lot of air-play on the internet by end users, social media as well as Boxee's platform partners.  With the ability to support a "soup to nuts" offering of web-delivered content from big name providers such as NetFlix, YouTube, CBS and ABC, as well as stream locally stored media from NAS devices, USB drives, optical devices and even a BitTorrent tracker; Boxee's "10 foot" user interface claims to be able to become... Well, this explains a lot. The Boxee Box has been somewhat of a unicorn over the past months, with delay after delay sinking the hype that came with the product's initial launch. Back in June, it was reported that the Boxee Box was being delayed until November. Now, we think we know why. Originally, the Boxee Box was going to be based on an NVIDIA GPU, but now it looks like the Boxee Box will utilize Intel parts instead. Talk about pulling the rug out from under NVIDIA. It's honestly hard to say what sort of internal happenings caused the switch, but a new release issued today has confirmed that the Boxee Box will now ship with an Intel Atom processor inside. Announced today at the Intel Developer... Read more...
Waiting is a tough, tough thing. Waiting on a new gadget is even tougher. Late last year, the folks at Boxee seemed to think that the Boxee Box (which was being built by D-Link) would be available to consumers in the first half of 2010. It's sort of tough to believe, but the first half of 2010 is just about over. With the latter half quickly approaching, Boxee has issued an update to everyone wondering if we'd see the Boxee Box go on sale in the next couple of weeks. Unfortunately, that doesn't look like it will be the case. According to a new post on Boxee's own blog, the original plan was to have the Box out by the end of Q2 (i.e. just about now), but that time-frame "proved overly ambitious."... Read more...
