Google is working hard to improve natural language understanding and one of the key areas that is being used to improve that understanding is the development of word vectors. A word vector allows machine learning algorithms to understand the relationship between words based on actual language usage. This has led to Semantic Experiences such as Talk to Books that Google unveiled this week. The tech is similar to what Google uses in Smart Reply for Gmail. Talk to Books is a new way to explore books that starts at a sentence level. This allows you to enter a sentence or ask a question and the tool will find sentences in books that respond to your question. There is no dependence on keyword... Read more...
Have you ever tried to pitch the merits of an ebook reader to a book lover who wants nothing to do with digital print? To them, it's the dead tree model or bust, and for various reasons—it could be the feel of the book or the smell of the papers, or even just an aversion to electronic devices. Whatever the case might be, paper bound books are still popular among many folk, and Amazon may try to capitalize on the trend by opening up brick and mortar book stores. Nothing is carved in stone, but according to a person who's supposedly been briefed on the plans and spoke with The New York Times on the condition of anonymity, Amazon was encouraged with its sole bookstore in Seattle and is now looking... Who could've seen this coming? The online e-tailer that made waves by selling nearly every book in the universe is keeping the art of reading at the forefront of its sales... but in a very different way. As digital bookworms have emerged and Amazon's Kindle line of tablets and e-readers have exploded, Amazon has issued "Kindle First." The exclusive program is one that promises Kindle users the ability to snag new books well before their official release date. Here's how it works: Each month, Amazon Publishing editors select several titles from Kindle’s most popular categories a month ahead of their official publication date, adding a note of recommendation and a behind-the-scenes look at... NEW YORK (AP) — With e-book sales exploding in an otherwise sleepy market, Random House Inc. announced Monday that it was making thousands of additional books available in digital form, including novels by John Updike and Harlan Coben, as well as several volumes of the Magic Treehouse children's series. Random House CEO Markus Dohle said in a statement that "more people everyday are enjoying reading in the electronic format and Random House wants to extend our reach to them with more of our books." From pre-paid calling cards to minute plans with so-called "free phones", sometimes it's painfully obvious that, although we hate to admit it here, it's not always completely about the hardware.  More than a few industry analyst have predicted that the mainstream PC of tomorrow will be nothing more than a thin client connected to the "grid" for services and applications.  Now, Computerworld's Mike Elgan ruminates about what will likely be the new frontier for affordable, mobile computing; the $99 Netbook with a "plan"..."Subnotebooks like the Asus Eee PC, the Dell Mini 9 and the HP 2133 Mini-Note will soon cost as little as $99. The catch? You'll need to commit to a two-year... Read more...
Steve Jobs unveiled a slew of new Apple notebooks only a few moments ago... So without further ado, here are the juicy tidbits: Apple is using a new manufacturing technique that actually carves the MacBook's frame from a single slab of Aluminum. What starts out as a 2.5-pound metal slab becomes a "unibody" notebook frame that weighs less than 0.25 pounds. The carved-off pieces of aluminum are captured and recycled. This new manufacturing process enables Apple to build stronger, lighter, and thinner notebooks. MacBook Pro (Credit: Apple) Apple has also traded in the MacBook line's Intel-based chipset/GPU for ones from Nvidia. (Let's hope that the dreaded Nvidia mobile graphics chip defect doesn't... Sony has been dealing with the fallout from overheating batteries for a couple of years now, so it should be used to the fire drills associated with running damage control on overheating products. That practice should come in handy, as the latest hot potato form Sony is an entire line of overheating laptops. In cooperation with the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission, Sony has issued a voluntary recall of about 73,000 units of its VAIO TZ-series notebooks that were sold in the U.S. between July 2007 and August 2008. It's becoming increasingly difficult for manufacturers to find new and unique ways to differentiate their products from that of their competitors. With price margins razor thin and many of a system's core components coming from the same suppliers, products in the same categories from different manufacturers tend to offer the same functionality, at the same price, and the products often even look similar to each other. But they might not all smell the same. When we first heard about the new line of scented notebooks from Asus, we were certain that it had to be a hoax. Wrong! Our B.S. detectors were faulty this time around--it turns out that the Asus F6 scented notebooks are, in fact, the real... Read more...
Since moving to the "top of the world," everything Apple does is watched - and watched carefully.  With iPhone launches done (though iPhone shortages still of interest), some have turned their eyes toward the more mundane portion of Apple's business: the computer portion of it.  And some circuit board orders are being pointed as a possible clue of new MacBooks. The Commercial Times reported (in Chinese, but translated by Digitimes) that Apple has increased its orders of printed-circuit boards for notebooks by 20 percent, compared to last quarter.Macs are selling pretty well lately, but that's a stronger boost than would be expected from the usual seasonal patterns, and it's unlikely... The continued demand for laptop memory appears to be overshadowing the need for faster graphics memory, at least according to inside sources at unnamed players in the DRAM industry:"Some DRAM makers have started allotting more capacity for commodity DRAM, especially SO-DIMMs for notebooks, the sources said.  Capacity for GDDR has started to strain amid the strategic capacity allocation, they noted.  As DRAM makers are expected to reserve capacity priority for commodity DRAM for 1-2 quarters, a price revision for GDDR is thus likely, they said.  The sources indicated that a price hike is likely to be seen from the second half of May, as some system makers are expected to completely digest their... A recent update to Quicken Pro is having an adverse effect on some Macs.  By adverse effect, we mean that it's deleting non-Quicken related data on the desktop.  Yes, the desktop, the same place that users often put data they're currently working on.“The update caused several Mac users to lose data from their Desktop folders, infuriating many who were hoping to close their books this week for 2007, only to lose valuable purchase orders and spreadsheets. This problem doesn't appear to affect those using QuickBooks on Windows PCs, but it does appear to be causing problems for both Tiger and Leopard users. The update apparently came along with a prompt that read, "there is not enough space... Read more...
