Adr1ft, the first-person survival game set on a damaged space station, will soon be available on PS4. This is the first game from Three One Zero, a company formed by former Microsoft Xbox team member Adam Orth.
The game was inspired by Orth’s own dramatic departure from Microsoft. When Microsoft's Xbox One was announced, it was met with controversy for its digital rights management that would require users to remain online to use the console. At the time, Orth was Microsoft’s Creative Director, and told users to “deal with it”. This led to massive backlash and is his eventual resignation. Orth remarked that the game is a metaphor for his own life, because he himself and the game’s protagonist find themselves in the middle of a disaster, and must "do the hard work to put things together".
Gamers play as astronaut Alex Oshima who wanders around in her space capsule after some unknown catastrophe. Oshima has no recollection of the incident and needs to piece together what happened. The astronaut has to bounce around a zero-gravity environment while keeping track of oxygen levels.
The premise of the game is slightly reminiscent of C.B.E Software’s 2104 J.U.L.I.A. Among the Stars, a remake of the 2012 movie J.U.L.I.A. In J.U.L.I.A. Among the Stars, astrobiologist Rachel Manners is awakened from cryogenic sleep by the ship's artificially intelligent computer J.U.L.I.A. She must figure out why her crew members were awakened before her and why they died.
Adr1ft was supposed to be released earlier but its launch date for the PC platform was delayed so it would match the release of Oculus Rift. Three One Zero announced in February that they had secured a deal with Oculus. The license permitted gamers to play Adr1ft via Steam using their Oculus Rift VR headsets. In May, Three One Zero also released an HTC Vive version of the game.
There is no official word yet whether Adr1ft will be available on PlayStation VR though Sony's headset is supposed to be released on October 13th. The game should make its debut on Xbox One on September 15th but North American and European PlayStation gamers will be able to get their hands on the game for $19.99 (USD) on July 15th.
