Scary Android GhostMap Exploit Traps Devices In Permanent Boot Loop

The folks at Bitdefender have discovered a new type of malicious Android app that can force a phone into a nigh-unfixable boot loop without the app even being launched.

If the app is installation is kicked off and either Android 17 or a third-party security scanner doesn't catch it and prevent the installation from completing, at this point in there is effectively no recourse without resorting to a factory reset or (possibly) a targeted removal via the Android Debug Bridge (ADB.)

Despite the apparent severity of the issue, Google considers it "outside the scope of a security update fix," though it has forwarded the finding to its engineers for possible inclusion in a future Android update.

Fortunately, this shouldn't be an unfixable problem for either Google or end users who wound up infected. GhostMap is a parser differential vulnerability exploit, and Android has been under attack by exploits like this for more than a decade, per Bitdefender. And unlike SMS of Death, for which there is no defense beyond a new number, new phone, or a patch that may not come, app scanners like Bitdefender's own Bitdefender Mobile Security can catch applications like these.

So, if you get struck by GhostMap, what can you do? Bitdefender points out that a factory reset would fix the issue, but since the problem is a malicious app, skilled users of ADB on an impacted device should be able to remove the app and fix the problem as well.

As long as you know which app caused the problem, ADB can be used on your boot-looping phone in Recovery Mode to remove the application, per these instructions. There's no guarantee that fix will work, but it's a step worth trying before nuking your phone entirely with a factory reset.

Hopefully, Google will get better at detecting exploits like these on the Play Store, or at least patch GhostMap in the next Android security update.
