Pokémon Chief Says Nintendo NX Will Be Hybrid Home And Handheld Console

Rumors about the Nintendo NX have been floating around for over a year. Pokémon Company head Tsunekazu Ishihara just revealed a little more about the mysterious device. He remarked, “The NX is trying to change the concept of what it means to be a home console device or a handheld device. We will make games for the NX.”

Based on Ishihara’s comment, the NX is likely to be a hybrid home and handheld console. This hypothesis would match a comment made by an anonymous source to Eurogamer. It would also match a leak that stated that the NX will have detachable controllers with motion controls.

Ishihara’s comment also confirms that there will be Pokémon games for the NX. Game Freak, the developer of most Pokémon games, has traditionally released spin-offs rather than the core handheld games. They could very well be getting ready to launch a core handheld Pokémon game for the NX.

What do we actually know about the Nintendo NX? Very little is set in stone. The NX might be one of the first game consoles in some time to not incorporate "AMD Inside". The NX will reportedly contain NVIDIA's Tegra X1 within. It has also been that reported that the portable console will be able to connect to big screen HDTV’s through a docking station.

The NX will use a brand new Nintendo-developed operating system (instead of Android). It will not have backwards compatibility with Wii or Wii U games or incorporate VR. It is also rumored that the NX's graphics performance will fall somewhere in between Sony's PlayStation 3 and PlayStation 4 consoles.

The NX is shrouded in mystery and will likely continue to remain so until its unveiling later this month or in October. The device is slated to launch in March 2017.
