Nintendo Restarting NES Classic Production In 2018, SNES Classic Sales Extended

Well, this is definitely a suspiring turn of events. Nintendo just announced this morning that it will be bringing back the wildly popular NES Classic Edition console; however, retro gamers will have to wait until the 2018 to see them return to store shelves.

Although Nintendo didn't get into specifics, it stated that brand new shipments of the NES Classic Edition will arrive during the summer of next year. "More information about the timing of the return of NES Classic Edition will be announced in the future," said Nintendo in a statement.

This is a stunning reversal from earlier this year, when Nintendo abruptly ended production of the console, which retailed for $59.99, and is still selling for over $200 on auction sites. "We had originally planned for this to be a product for last holiday," said Fils-Aimé in late April.

"We just didn't anticipate how incredible the response would be. Once we saw that response, we added shipments and extended the product for as long as we could to meet more of that consumer demand."

Fils-Aimé went on to add that the company had bigger fish to fry, and that there wasn't enough room in its production schedule for the NES Classic Edition. “It’s important to recognize where our future is and the key areas that we need to drive. We've got a lot going on right now and we don't have unlimited resources."

But the return of the NES Classic Edition isn't the only bit of good news coming out of Nintendo this morning. The company also announced that it will extend SNES Class Edition production into 2018, backtracking from its previous commitment to only produce the consoles through the end of 2017.

"In addition, more units of Super NES Classic Edition will ship on its Sept. 29 launch day in the U.S. than were shipped of NES Classic Edition all last year, with subsequent shipments arriving in stores regularly," wrote Nintendo. This public statement meshes with comments made by Fils-Aimé earlier this week about SNES Classic Edition production.
