In this week's episode of 'How the GPU World Turns', NVIDIA's GeForce RTX 3060 from two generations ago picked itself up by the bootstraps and retook the top spot on Steam, one month after having conceded the position to the current-generation GeForce RTX 5070 based on Blackwell. Are we really witnessing a middleweight donnybrook? Probably not, though the numbers still paint an interesting story.
Given how massively popular Valve's Steam platform is with an estimated 150-200+ million monthly active users, the monthly hardware and software surveys provide some of the best snapshots for trends within the PC gaming community. However, the data is not bulletproof. For one, survey participants are randomly selected and it's an opt-in affair. Secondly, because of how the surveys operate, the numbers can be off any given month, leading to wild fluctuations in rankings.
That is what we're seeing now, or again. The GeForce RTX 3060 is no stranger to the top spot on Steam in terms of popularity, though it sometimes concedes its ranking, as it did last month when the GeForce RTX 5070 temporarily took the crown. So what's going on?

As a user on Reddit points out, China's National Day Golden Week runs from October 1-7. That timing lines up with a significant 9.41% decrease in Simplified Chinese language share in the October survey. Because Steam’s hardware survey is an unweighted opt-in sample, large shifts in regional participation can temporarily distort GPU rankings. In this case, the September spike in 50-series mid-range cards appears to have been inflated by elevated Chinese-user participation rather than a sudden global change in the install base.
Still, the adjusted breakdown based on the October survey's results is interesting. While Steam still has the GeForce RTX 3060 on top, it's really neck-and-neck with the GeForce RTX 5070, with each card claiming a 3.78% share of Steam users who participated in the survey. It's possible that the numbers are still normalizing—the GeForce RTX 3060 was up to 3.92% in August and 3.88% in both July and June—but it's a close race for the top-ranked spot.
Meanwhile, Linux continues to gain steam (see what we did there?). All Linux distros combined climbed nearly a full percentage point to 3.95%. Windows is still the dominant PC gaming platform of choice at 93.7%, but it will be interesting to see if Linux can continue its ascent over the course of 2027 with each new Steam survey.
