ASUS Teases ROG Android Gaming Smartphone For Computex Reveal

We've been hearing quite a bit about ASUS' upcoming Republic of Gamers (ROG) Android gaming smartphone in recent months. The company first gave us a hint that such a device was in the works back in April, and more recently the phone was tipped to debut at Computex.

Today, we're getting official word that a "new member" is joining the ASUS’ ROG family. The image shows a shadowy device with the words "Coming Soon" hovering over it. The reveal date in the tweet is June 4th, 2018, which is one day before the official start of Computex 2018.

Although it's hard to see in the original tweet, a little fiddling around in my photo editor shows what looks to be a smartphone attached to gaming controller "dock". This should allow for the smartphone to be used with more complex games without having resort to furiously tapping and dragging on the screen. Fortnite is coming to Android this summer, so this could be the perfect pairing for on-the-go gamers.

Not much else is known at this time, although we fully expect that the ROG phone will feature Qualcomm’s powerhouse Snapdragon 845 processor with at least 6GB of RAM. However, 6GB of RAM is pretty par for the course for many Android flagship these days (including ones from ASUS), so we'd like to see 8GB for a gaming rig. It remains to be seen what ASUS will respect to screen resolution (the ZenFone 5 tops out at 2246 x 1080) or refresh rate. The Razer Phone has a kickass 120Hz Sharp IGZO panel.

We should learn more about the ASUS ROG phone next week including its full specs, details on this mysterious controller, pricing and availability. ASUS will be joining a growing field of Android gaming phones that kicked off with the aforementioned Razer Phone. Other entries that have recently joined the fray include the Xiaomi Blackshark and the Nubia Red Magic.
