Samsung Gear S Tizen Smartwatch Headed To All Four Major U.S. Carriers This Fall
Samsung's Gear S sports a rectangular 2-inch curved face with Super AMOLED panel and 480x360 resolution; the watch as a whole measures 39.9 by 58.1 x 12.5 millimeters (1.57 x 2.28 x 0.49 inches). It rocks a dual-core processor clocked at 1GHz, 512MB of RAM, 4GB of internal storage. 802.11n Wi-Fi, Bluetooth 4.1, USB 2.0, and various sensors.
The Gear S represents a departure from Android, a mobile operating system that's been very lucrative for Samsung, and instead runs the company's home brewed Tizen OS. A potentially major upside of the Gear S is that it doesn't need a smartphone nearby to operate -- you can still make calls and send text messages.
Will it be a contender? We won't have to wait long to find out. AT&T today confirmed plans to add the Gear S to its line of gadgets and said you'll be able to "check out" the new device starting Friday, September 26 in 125 AT&T retail stores across the U.S. Bear in mind you won't be able to buy one on Friday -- AT&T says it will announce pricing and availability at a later date.
