Gleeful 90-Year-Old Grandmother Reacts to Oculus Rift on Video

As a technology journalist, I'll be the first to admit it's easy to be cynical in this business. Developers often promise the moon and stars when touting new products, only to fall well short of delivering the goods (Duke Nukem Forever, if you need an example). At the same time, we inevitably take technology for granted, nitpicking devices to death partly because our expectations are so high, but in some cases, it's also because we've simply forgotten what a beautiful age we live in. That's what makes this video of a lovable 90-year-old grandmother so awesome.

YouTube user Paul Rivot filmed a video of his grandmother wearing the Oculus Rift virtual reality headset as she excitedly takes in the 3D wonders presented in the Tuscani demo. Her reactions are priceless, and near the end, she describes the experience as being "like magic," serving as a reminder of why we love technology in the first place. Have a look:

The Oculus Rift raised over $2.4 million in funding on Kickstarter, blowing way past its initial goal of $250,000 to rank as one of the crowd funding site's most successful projects. The development kit is already available to pre-order for $300, and it was also announced that Valve will support the project with a VR Mode in Team Fortress 2.

Whether or not the virtual reality headset will capture the hearts (and wallets) of gamers remains to be seen, but lest cynicism gets the best of us, we need only be reminded of the 90-year-old grandmother and her reaction as to why these projects need to exist.
