One of the reasons to considering upgrading to Windows 8 is the improved security Microsoft baked into its latest operating system. This is especially true if you pair the touch-friendly OS with an antivirus or Internet security suite program, a point that's underscored by the latest results published by AV-Test.org, an independent testing firm located in Germany. For the first time, AV-Test examined antivirus protection in Windows 8, testing more than two dozen programs, including Microsoft's built-in Windows Defender 4.0 engine. Remarkably, all 26 programs put under the microscope were awarded the AV-Test certificate when used with Windows 8. That doesn't mean all AV programs performed the... Read more...
Windows 8 devices haven't been able to reinvigorate a slumping PC market to this point, but if Microsoft keeps slashing prices, perhaps things will change. If you pop your head into the Microsoft Store online, you'll discover several recently discounted tablets and convertibles, including one that's been marked down $400. Which one? Samsung's ATIV Smart PC 500T tablet/notebook hybrid with AT&T 4G LTE. The 11.6-inch Windows 8 convertible wields a touchscreen panel with a surprisingly affordable $499 price tag, down significantly from $899. It also has an Intel Atom Z2760 processor clocked at 1.80GHz, 2GB of LPDDR2-800MHz memory, 64GB solid state drive, microSD card reader, three USB 2.0 ports,... Read more...
Don't look now, but in the near future, it's possible we'll see a smaller size Windows 8 tablet designed to compete with Apple's iPad mini and all those 7-inch slates, like the Nexus 7 (Google) and Kindle Fire HD (Amazon). Maybe Microsoft will take the reins and build a smaller Surface. As Kevin Garnett famously said, anything is possible. But is it plausible? I'd argue that it is. According to Apple Insider, Microsoft recently tweaked its Windows 8 hardware certification guidelines to allow for devices with screen resolutions of 1024x768 at a depth of 32 bits. Guess what resolution the iPad mini sports? That's right, 1024x768. "This doesn't imply we're encouraging partners to regularly use a... Read more...
You'd have to live in the middle of the earth not to notice the trend towards thinner mobile devices, and even that's not a guarantee you'd miss it. Ultrabooks, ultrathins, tablets, and hybrid PCs are all sporting slimmer designs that emphasize portability, and while there are tangible benefits to building thinner gadgets, it often comes at the cost of being able to replace or upgrade the built-in battery without some serious hacking (the physical kind). As we know, that's easier said than done. Windows 8 tablets are no exception, which is why we were so surprised to see Dell's Latitude 10 wield a user-replaceable battery (check out our full review). The Latitude 10 comes standard with a 2-cell... Read more...
Are business oriented tablets such as the Dell Latitude 10 better suited for the workplace than popular mainstream tablets such as the iPad? Dell believes their solutions are. Last month, Dell issued a press release in which it claimed its Latitude 10 Enhanced Security tablet is "up to 17 times faster and 94 percent less expensive to deploy than iPads in large scale enterprise implementations." Those are bold claims with very specific figures to back them up.  Regardless of how you feel about Apple, Dell, or another manufacturer's products, one thing is certain: the use of tablets for business purposes is gaining significant traction. In this review, we are taking a hands-on look at the... Read more...

Here's a question: does the world need a giant Windows 8 PC? Something tells us the answer must be "yes," and that something is the InFocus BigTouch. It's a giant 55" all-in-one Windows PC, built for huge conference rooms, educational spaces, and working event spaces. Or, the home office of someone who firmly believes that bigger is truly better. It's a massive machine -- large enough to double as a suitable HDTV in most cases, with an internal PC that boasts six USB sockets, two HDMI ports, two Ethernet jacks, a Core i5 processor, and a display resolution of 1920x1080. There's also a 120GB solid state drive, plenty of cooling, a touch layer, built-in wireless, and a borderline-crazy $5,000 price... Read more...
The fate of Windows 8 is yet to be determined, but amid lagging PC sales and grumpy customers who just aren’t all that excited about Microsoft’s latest operating system, there’s a bit of a dark cloud over it. The cloud is even darker over tablets running Windows 8; for example, Microsoft's Surface tablets have badly missed sales expectations among average consumers, and the likes of Samsung have actually cancelled some Windows RT tablet launches. However, according to a white paper by Patrick Moorhead, former AMD executive and current analyst at Moor Insights and Strategy (with help from Paul Teich), the enterprise could be the market where Windows tablets find their footing.... It's not just Windows Phone 8 fighting for flagship apps -- it's also Windows 8, to some degree. As Microsoft throws its weight behind those two major operating systems, at least one major developer is joining the Win8 fray this week: Twitter. That's right -- starting today you'll find a proper Windows 8 Twitter app available to download, so you won't have to use third-party clients or the Web if you don't want to. In addition to familiar Twitter features, including the Home, Connect, Discover, and Me tabs, this app introduces new functionality that takes advantage of unique Windows 8 features. First off, there's Snap View, which allows users to use another app right alongside Twitter. Snap Twitter... Read more...
Another month is in the books, and that means another opportunity to examine market share data for Windows 8. Microsoft's touch-friendly operating system (OS) grew its market share to 2.7 percent in February, up slightly from 2.26 percent in January. Going back even further, Windows 8's share of the market was 1.72 percent in December and 1.09 percent in November, a little over a month after it launched to the general public. Windows 7 still claims the top spot with a 44.55 percent share of the market. That's not much of a change from last month when it claimed a 44.48 percent stake, though it's somewhat interesting that it's share grew since last month, if ever so slightly. Windows Vista, meanwhile,... Read more...
Windows 8 sales may have gotten off to somewhat of a slow start, but has since sold 60 million copies, which includes both individual licenses and new PC sales with Windows 8 pre-installed. That figure may get a boost in the coming weeks as Best Buy starts offering discounts on touchscreen PCs. According to The Wall Street Journal, Best Buy on Sunday is kicking off a two-week promotion offering $100 off the purchase of touchcreen laptops and desktops running Windows 8. Microsoft couldn't be happier about it. "Touch unlocks an entirely new way to interact with Windows that we believe represents the future of computing," Janelle Poole, marketing communications senior director for Windows, said... Is it a notebook or is it a tablet? Like a growing number of Windows 8 devices, the Transformer Book from Asus is both, depending on how you utilize it, and it's finally showing up to the party. Asus first introduced the Transformer Book all the way back in June of last year, and now eight months later, you can pre-order the device, provided you pony up the requisite $1,480 MacMall wants for it. The online retailer doesn't say when the Transformer Book will actually ship, stating only "Place your order today and be one of the first to receive this product when it arrives!" For what it's worth, an online retailer in Germany lists the Transformer Book as being available next month. As a refresher,... Read more...
