Roughly a year ago, Western Digital launched its 3.5-inch WD Red NAS hard drives in 1TB, 2TB, and 3TB capacities, and now the company has added to the Red family with a 4TB 3.5-inch drive as well as a couple of 2.5-inch options. The 2.5-inch WD Red NAS drives, like the 3.5-inch versions, are also purpose-built for SOHO NAS storage with 1 to 5 bays. The SATA 6Gbps drives feature IntelliPower rotational speed and come in capacities of 1TB and 750GB. Why the 2.5-inch versions? “This small form factor enables our customers to use high capacity NAS hard drives that offer performance, quiet operation, and low power consumption in a more compact NAS enclosure,” wrote WD in a press release.... Western Digital has a new line of portable hard drives on the market, the My Passport Ultra, which adds to the family of My Passport devices and serves as a generational bump for the My Passport Edge. In fact, the Ultra looks exactly like the Edge (and comes in black, silver, red, or blue), but it comes in a greater variety of capacities--500GB, 1TB, and 2TB. The drives feature USB 3.0, WD Smartware Pro backup software (which includes Dropbox integration), and password protection and hardware encryption for added security. The 500GB version will run you $99.99 while the 1TB version is $129.99; there’s no price yet on the 2TB My Passport Ultra, but it won’t be available until Q3 anyway.... Read more...
Western Digital and SanDisk are teaming up to produce a 2.5-inch SSHD that essentially puts a SanDisk iSSD with a WD Black SSHD. Perhaps its obvious that two companies could bring their respective expertise to the same table to develop a single product with the best of both, but this sort of thing doesn’t happen every day. WD obviously brings its wealth of experience in the storage market as well as its SSHD and SATA IO technology, and SanDisks’ contribution is designed to deliver lower power consumption, reduced cost, better reliability, and it should also facilitate a smaller form factor. Indeed, the WD Black SSHD is a scant 5mm thick, and it offers 500GB of storage for the industry’s... Read more...
As ultraportable devices of various stripes proliferate, there's a corresponding need for extra-slim storage drives that still deliver in terms of performance and storage capacity. Western Digital has a pair of new products to address those needs with the WD Blue HDD and WD Black SSHD drives. Both of the 2.5-inch drives are just 5mm thick to give OEMs a solution that occupies as small a space as possible, leaving room for extra schock absorption and overall thinner computer chassis. WD says that thinner devices mean that the drives are more susceptible to damage, so they included "best-in-class" technology to reduce shock and noise, as well as StableTrac and dual-stage atcuators. The drives connect... Read more...
Western Digital announced a new solution for legacy datacenter storage with the WD Xe, which consists of a 2.5-inch SAs hard drive mounted in a 3.5-inch WD “performance adapter”. The package is designed to offer low power consumption coupled with high performance for datacenters that need a way to migrate from 3.5-inch drive based systems without ditching their existing chassis. The 10,000 RPM SAS drives feature 6Gbps tranfser rates with sequential data rates of 204MBps with up to 50% higher capacity and 67% less power consumption of other 3.5-inch (15,000 RPM) solutions. The solution also offers easy upgradability, dual-port full duplex connectivity, and NoTouch ramp load technology.... Read more...
When it comes to hard drives, performance is important but capacity is king. Western Digital is keeping pace with growing storage trends--including several of its own lines of products--by unveiling new 4TB versions of its WD Black desktop hard drives. The 3.5-inch drives offer 7200 RPM speed, 64MB cache, and SATA 6Gbps interfaces in addition to a handful of features designed to enhance accuracy and promote longevity. These include dual actuators that use two heads for more accurate positioning over data tracks as well as dual processors which are designed to enable significant performance boosts. WD’s IntelliSeek feature delivers ideal seek speeds to cut down on power consumption, noise,... Read more...
The first wave of devices supporting the 802.11ac standard is still coming, and Western Digital is now part of it with its announcement of the My Net AC1300 router and My Net AC WiFi Bridge. As you might expect, the routers offers both 802.11ac on the 5GHz band and 802.11n on the 2.4GHz bands, and the My Net AC1300 is further bolstered by WD’s FasTrack technology, which prioritizes network traffic to deliver optimal performance for applications such as streaming video. The router has four Gigabit Ethernet ports and two USB 2.0 ports, which are ideal for connecting external storage, and the bridge can convert up to four devices from wired to wireless. WD is also proud of its setup process,... Read more...
When considering a new storage solution, most users try to find the right balance between speed and capacity. SSDs are super fast, no doubt about it, but an HDD spinning at 7200RPM or 10,000RPM will still offer solid performance, and you have access to dramatically more storage capacity for a far lower cost per GB compared to an SSD. Western Digital’s 4TB WD RE SATA drive certainly satisfies the need for capacity. And at a 7200RPM spindle speed with a SATA 6Gbps interface,64MB of cache, and up to 171MBps sustained transfer rates, the performance balance is there as well. In the enterprise, though, there’s a third consideration that can trump the other two: reliability. WD RE 4TB Enterprise-Class... Read more...

Western Digital has announced a line of SAS and SATA hard drives designed for both the consumer and enterprise markets, and they’re designed for high-capacity and longevity. The 3.5-inch, 7,200RPM WD RE SATA drives are available in capacities of 2TB, 3TB, and 4TB capacities, and the SAS drives come in 1TB, 2TB, 3TB, or 4TB. Western Digital sees the drives as ideal for public and private cloud environments. The higher storage density allows companies to include more storage capacity in a smaller footprint, which is always a plus, and the drives are designed to last, thereby cutting down on lifecycle management costs. The drives boast reliability features including 1.4M hours MTBF and 1.2M... Read more...
Western Digital’s color-coded families of hard drives added another member today in the form of WD Red, a line of 3.5-inch drives designed specifically for small office/home office NAS systems with between one and five bays. The drives come in capacities of 1TB, 2TB, and 3TB (SATA 6Gbps) and feature NASware and 3D Active Balance Plus technology for better reliability and system performance, IntelliPower RPM, 145 or 150 MB/s transfer performance (depending on the model), 64MB cache, and are rated for 1 million MTBF. WD is also throwing in 24x7 tech support and a three-year limited warranty. The demands of a NAS system can be taxing on hard drives, so the WD Red disks were designed for that... Read more...

Although solid state drives have generated the lion’s share of buzz in the storage space these last few years, traditional hard drives with spinning media continue to be a mainstay of the industry and have evolved to offer higher capacities and more performance than ever before. Of course, even the fastest of today’s hard drives can’t compete with solid state drives in terms of peak transfer speeds and especially access times, but the release of the new WD VelociRaptor we’ll be showing you here today helps close the gap just a bit... Word around the Web is that some hard drive makers are cutting down their warranty terms, the timing of which couldn't be any worse (we'll get to that in a minute). Western Digital is dropping the distribution warranty period for Caviar Blue, Caviar Green, and Scorpio Blue drives from 3 years to 2 years (Caviar Black and Scorpio Black will still carry 5-year warranties). News of Western Digital's reduced warranty terms was first reported by The Register, which got its hands on the following letter: This new warranty policy will be effective for drives shipped from January 2nd, 2012. It is important that you take a moment to update your website(s) and collateral to reflect this change for effected... Read more...
