Back in September 2016, NVIDIA first introduced us to a brand new ARM64 architecture called Xavier. Xavier is a custom octa-core processor architecture that features NVIDIA’s latest Volta GPU (512 CUDA cores). When Xavier was originally announced, NVIDIA expected to begin sampling in Q4 2017, with volume production slated for 2018. Tonight, NVIDIA announced that its first samples of Xavier chips are now on the way to customers. Early yesterday morning, we brought you news of a YouTuber that managed to get his hands on one of the first NVIDIA TITAN V graphics cards that shipped to well-heeled customers. BitsBeTrippin' slapped the chest thumpin' Volta-based GPU into an AMD Ryzen Threadripper 1950X system, and cranked out 70 MH/s at stock speeds and 77 MH/s while overclocked, while drawing 213W and 237W respectively. Make no bones about it, the new TITAN V is a monster graphics card. We know this from the spec sheet alone—the NVIDIA TITAN V is rocking a Volta GPU underneath the hood, along with a whole bunch of redesigned Tensor cores for deep learning workloads. In July of 2016, NVIDIA launched the Pascal-based TITAN X, promising 11 teraflops (TFLOPs) of compute performance. In April of this year, NVIDIA ratcheted up the performance a tad with a fully unlocked Pascal GP102 core in the form of TITAN Xp, boasting a full 12 TFLOPs of compute power. NVIDIA has found plenty of partners for its DRIVE PX 2 autonomous driving platform, including the likes of Toyota and Volvo. When it was first announced back at CES 2016, NVIDIA billed Drive PX 2 as the "world's first in-car artificial intelligence supercomputer". Not one to rest on its laurels, the GPU and AI company pulled the wraps off the Drive PX 2 Pegasus platform at GTC Europe. For those who need the ultimate in compute power, but can't accommodate a computer that would fill an entire room, NVIDIA's DGX-1 'supercomputer' fits the bill. Unveiled earlier this year at NVIDIA's own GTC, the DGX-1 is a server unit that packs in 8 of the company's ultra-powerful Tesla V100s, delivering a peak 960 TFLOPS of half-precision performance. NVIDIA has been firing on all cylinders recently. The company has been crushing it with respect to its core markets and products in PC graphics, silicon engines for autonomous self-driving cars and AI accelerators. Nowhere was this strong performance more on display than during the company’s Q2 earnings results, which came out after the closing bell yesterday. Internet sleuths have stumbled upon a set of pictures posted to a Facebook account belonging to an intern at NVIDIA and in the process may have discovered the first look at a next-generation Titan graphics card. Reports coming out of China indicate that Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC) has inked deals with NVIDIA and Qualcomm to produce high performance computing (HPC) chips that will be used for artificial intelligence applications, among other things. That includes the fabrication of NVIDIA's next-generation Volta GPUs using a 12-nanometer FinFET manufacturing process. Rumors had surfaced in January that NVIDIA had tapped TSMC to build its Volta GPUs, and assuming the new reports are accurate, it would appear that contract negotiations have been finalized. One of the biggest moments in the history of 3D graphics is when NVIDIA released its Pascal architecture last year. The generational leap in graphics performance lived up to the hype with higher end parts negating the need to run multiple graphics cards in SLI for consistently smooth gaming at 4K.
