Velocity Micro announced a line of tiny “SmallBlock” desktops that promise performance capabilities that are not commensurate with their size. The mini-ITX systems include gaming, workstation, and home office configurations within a chassis size of 12.75 x 8 x 9.1 inches (HxWxD). “The SmallBlock platform is the culmination of six months of obsessive development and constant refinement from our team,” said Velocity Micro president and CEO Randy Copeland. “I believe this footprint is the future vision of desktop computing. Most HTPCs have more modest components than your average gaming rig, and they’re typically designed to be quiet and to blend in with a home theater. Enthusiasts who go the HTPC route will often keep a dedicated PC in the media room and keep another set up for serious gaming. Velocity Micro is apparently not a fan of that model, because the company just released a monster system called the Raptor Multiplex that’s designed to be a kitchen sink sort of computer with both powerful gaming capabilities and all the home media amenities you’d want. CES 2013 is gearing up to be a huge, huge show in terms of quantity of products announced. So much so, in fact, that a number of companies have resorted to talking about their new stash ahead of schedule in order to grab a little more limelight. Velocity Micro is one of the early birds, announcing its entire CES gala just a few days early. Products include the dual core D610 Cruz tablet, quad core Q610 Cruz tablet, and the 4” x 4” Edge Mini. Netbooks may be fading, but ultralight laptops still have quite a bit of life left in them. As the new year begins, Velocity Micro is refreshing its line of NoteMagix laptops. The 14" Ultrabooks are seeing revisions, with the U430, U450, and U470 also getting internal boosts to bring 'em more in line with what rivals are offering in the here and now. You shouldn't look here if you're angling for the absolute thinnest laptop you can find, but each of them finds room for a DVD optical drive -- an increasingly rare object to find in thin-and-light portables. Velocity Micro acquired Overdrive PC a few years ago, and today it relaunched the brand with the Overdrive BigBlock.GTX, a machine designed for high-end performance and looks; indeed, Velocity Micro bills it as an “extreme luxury” system. The BigBlock.GTX is built on an ASUS Rampage Extreme IV motherboard and runs a six-core Intel Core i7 3960X Extreme Edition Processor that has been “Hyperclocked” up to 4.6GHz. The speedy CPU is complemented nicely by three-way NVIDIA GeForce GTX 680s, 32GB of quad-channel memory, and a pair of 240GB Intel 520 Series SSDs (backed with a 2TB storage drive).
