Velocity Micro Refreshes 14" Ultrabook Series

Netbooks may be fading, but ultralight laptops still have quite a bit of life left in them. As the new year begins, Velocity Micro is refreshing its line of NoteMagix laptops. The 14" Ultrabooks are seeing revisions, with the U430, U450, and U470 also getting internal boosts to bring 'em more in line with what rivals are offering in the here and now. You shouldn't look here if you're angling for the absolute thinnest laptop you can find, but each of them finds room for a DVD optical drive -- an increasingly rare object to find in thin-and-light portables.

Each of the units boast a 14" non-touch panel with a native resolution of 1366x768. Other universal specifications include a bloat-free install of Windows, a 1.3MP webcam, Intel HD 4000 graphics and a built-in battery that should last around six hours on a charge. The U430 is the entry-level model, entering at $800 with a Core i3 processor, 500GB HDD and 4GB of RAM. An extra $100 steps you up to the U450, which gets a 120GB SSD and a Core i5 chip. The top-end U470 rings up at $1100, though that premium buys you a Core i7 CPU and a 240GB SSD.

Each of the new rigs are available now for those making New Year's Resolutions to replace their aging laptop with something a bit more modern.
