For companies like TomTom, it's a tough road ahead. Personal navigation devices have lost their luster as people move on to in-car systems and savvy smartphones, but the company is being quite smart about its future. Instead of banking on PND sales, TomTom has just landed a deal to provide the in-car navigation system for Fiat's automobiles. It technically extends an existing partnership between the two, but now -- for the first time -- TomTom navigation will be built-in as part of the Fiat Group's new Uconnect 5" Radio Nav infotainment system. The new infotainment system will initially be available in Fiat 500L series models, and offers a 5" touch screen. Uconnect will feature many of the technologies... Read more...
Navigating from Point A to Point B can be tricky, especially these days when you never know if you're going to run into an Apple user wandering aimlessly using the broken Maps program in iOS 6. Fortunately for them, they have options, including the TomTom Navigation app. As luck would have it, the same app is now available to Android users for the first time via Google Play. That's right, TomTom learned to do the robot (see video below for proof). "TomTom has a history of making great navigation applications. Our existing iPhone app gets fantastic customer feedback and regularly wins awards," said Corinne Vigreux, Managing Director TomTom Consumer. "Today, we are bringing this world-class navigation... The latest version features the ability to navigate to addresses found on the Internet, search using foursquare, and the latest TomTom maps. The previous version (v1.10) of TomTom's iOS navigation app added Facebook Places, and this latest version now features foursquare, enabling users to search and navigate to foursquare places and check in upon arrival. Version 1.11 also brings a new certified Danger Zones service that stays within the new laws regarding camera alerts in France. In addition to the release of v1.11, TomTom recently launched a new Hands-Free Car Kit for iPhone. This kit features a built-in 2 watt... Read more...
For a relatively small fee, Marge Simpson and/or Mr. Burns will happily tell you where to make your next turn, or order you around the neighborhood depending on which character you choose. They're the newest voice downloads to land on the TomTom navigation app for iPhone, iPad, and personal navigation devices (PNDs), the company announced today. "We want to keep the offerings on the TomTom app fresh and exciting by introducing new voices at different times," said Jeffrey Godsick, President of Fox Consumer Products. "We know that fans of the show are going to appreciate these new additions as it gives them yet another platform to enjoy one of the greatest shows of all time. Marge Simpson and Mr.... Read more...
If there's one thing we can all agree on, it's this: there just aren't enough hours in the day. But if there's another, it's this: traffic bites. But as technology matures, it's slowly but surely becoming ever easier to dodge the traffic jams that annoy us so. TomTom had the first major third-party navigation app out on iOS, and today it remains a solid choice -- particularly for those looking for options that work in various countries. This week, the company issued a pretty major update -- version 1.8 -- which brings TomTom HD Traffic compatibility. With the update, iOS navigators will have the ability to reach their destination faster, as TomTom HD Traffic provides the most accurate traffic... Read more...
Traffic's a huge pain, is it not? Anyone who has to dodge traffic jams on a daily or weekly basis is undoubtedly tired of it, and so is TomTom. Thankfully, a GPS company wants to work with you on making your life easier. The company has just announced that TomTom HD Traffic Service is now available on every single TomTom LIVE GPS unit. That means that LIVE (a connected GPS unit) owners will receive valuable access to up-to-date traffic information as it happens, enabling their system to dodge upcoming jams and get them to their location more efficiently. Until now, TomTom HD Traffic was only available on the recently released GO 2535 M LIVE, so owners of the other LIVE units have to be celebrating.... Read more...
TomTom has managed to solicit all sorts of voices for their GPS boxes, but if you just haven't found one hilarious enough for you yet, this might just do the trick. Fresh out of Springfield, Homer Simpson becomes the latest character to have a voice on TomTom's GPS family, but only if you've got the iPhone app. TomTom's iPhone GPS app was the first major navigation app for iOS years ago, and now it's being updated with a bit of comedy. Developed in partnership with Twentieth Century Fox Consumer Products (FCP), The Gracie Films Worldwide Brand Division and Locutio Voice Technologies, the original Homer Simpson voice (recorded by Dan Castellaneta), for TomTom’s range of personal navigation... TomTom's GPS app was the first third-party navigation application to be revealed for the iPhone, and having that leg-up on everyone else has definitely helped the company out. Over time, lots of rivals have appeared, but the "original" has done a lot to keep itself current. The newest update, pushed out today to iTunes, takes the TomTom iPhone GPS app to version 1.6, and it brings a very, very useful new feature. The new feature is called Map Share. TomTom Map Share enables iPhone users to make changes instantly to their own maps and to benefit from free, map updates made by the TomTom community and verified by TomTom. App users will now be able to edit street names, set driving directions and... Read more...
Going to grandmother's house this Thanksgiving? If she has recently relocated, you probably don't want to be stopping anywhere for directions on a day where everything's closed. The TomTom GO 2405 and GO 2505 GPS units are both debuting today, with both looking a lot like TomTom units of the past. They also share Bluetooth, pinch-to-zoom functionality, voice recognition and a click-and-lock mount. Buyers will also get lifetime traffic and map updates and advanced lane... Read more...

Google Maps Navigation may have a leg-up on the other navigation services on the mobile platforms, but TomTom's not letting their guard down. The company was one of the first to showcase a full mobile navigation service for a mobile platform (iPhone OS, now iOS), and they have been constantly updating it ever since to make it more robust. There's plenty to love about it, and those who own an iPhone and a car dock could easily use the TomTom iPhone app in place of a dedicated navigation unit. And now, that choice is being made even simpler for users. TomTom v1.5 has now become available in Apple's App Store, with the new version allowing users to turn their photo gallery into an address book.... Read more...

Finally, a partnership that works. And a partnership that really gets at the core of what has been bothering drivers for years now. By and large, factory GPS/navigation systems are subpar. Automakers charge a bundle for them, and while they look nicely integrated, the feature set is generally lacking even compared to $100 standalone GPS systems from TomTom or Garmin. But now, Sony is realizing that people want legitimate navigation systems, and if you're looking to upgrade your vehicle's head unit, the new Xplod line isn't a bad place to look. A new partnership between Sony and TomTom has led to integration of TomTom's navigational services into Sony's Xplod head unit line. In other words, you... Read more...
Tom and Jerry. Starsky and Hutch. Mulder and Scully. Abbott and Costello. Batman and Robin. Bill and Ted (who went on an excellent adventure). Take your pick on which duo is your favorite, and while you're at it, add TomTom and Sony to the mix. The two companies just announced a new collaboration effort that will shuffle TomTom's navigation technology and services into Sony's Xplod AV Navigation Systems. Garmin's newest navigation machines were completely unlike any before them, looking more like a smartphone and less like a traditional in-car PND. TomTom's latest don't really leap that far forward in design, but they do offer a few new features that are rather attractive for avid road warriors. The new XL 350 and XXL 550 range of navigation devices incorporate a refreshed user interface, with two of the main new features being lifetime traffic updates and low-cost map updates. All TomTom products in the XL 350 and XXL 550 range include TomTom’s new EasyMenu user interface, which offers sharp graphics and a simple touchscreen menu that provides quick access to search tools so that users... The route less traveled, to take? That may not sound like something your existing GPS voice would say, but it's certainly something Yoda would say. Having unusual voice characters speak to you through your GPS system isn't entirely new, but TomTom's latest is probably the nerdiest yet. Star Wars characters guiding you around from point to point, in their own unique voice signatures? It's a George Lucas fan's dream come true, and considering that we're nowhere near April 1st, this is definitely the real deal. TomTom users in Europe can already download a number of voice packs, with Darth Vadar, C-3PO, Yoda and Han Solo up for grabs right now. We have to admit that a few of those are probably hard... Every major GPS maker had to reevaluate their business after Google introduced a free Google Maps Navigation service for Android; suddenly, the allure of a standalone navigation system wasn't as bright, and anyone out for a new smartphone would basically have the option of also getting free turn-by-turn navigation. Garmin recently revamped their navigation lineup with an extremely sleek trio of devices that honestly looked a lot like a smartphone, and now TomTom is following suit. In Europe today, the company introduced the GO LIVE 1000, which is a drastic departure for TomTom and one that was probably needed to remain competitive in this new landscape. It's the first in a whole new generation... Read more...
One of the biggest pains to buying a GPS system is the knowledge that your maps will be outdated within 12 months, if not sooner. TomTom knows it, and they're doing something about it. Announced this week, the company is selling select navigation models that come with Lifetime Map and Traffic Updates. For free! It's a move that was probably necessary to fight Garmin, Navigon and the slew of other nav options that are now coming to smartphones, including Google's own Maps Navigation. Better still, TomTom will allow users to download fresh maps "every few months," which include one million more miles than rival maps. The lifetime updates to traffic is also huge for those who travel a lot (and get... Read more...
