We called the 10-inch Toshiba Thrive the "Swiss Army Knife" of tablets when it first arrived, with its copious amounts of connectivity options and full-sized ports. It's a large-than-most tablet but the sort of device that differentiates itself in a crowd of too similar designs. The second coming of the Thrive, the Toshiba Thrive 7 that we're going to take a look at today, however, has to squeeze features and functionality into a decidedly smaller form factor. We suspect that the wave of low-cost Android tablets will fully hit at CES 2012, but Toshiba's trying to get in a little early. The Thrive isn't a Fire-priced slate, but with two models starting at $379.99, it's certainly not as pricey as the market-leading iPad. The 7" Android tablet boasts a 1280x800 native resolution, NVIDIA's Tegra 2, a 5MP rear camera, 2MP front camera, a microSD slot, USB port, Micro HDMI port, DLNA support and Bluetooth. Toshiba historically has been know for building notebooks that perhaps aren't as thin and sleek as other machines but rather have a build quality and feature set that is best-of-class. On the tablet front, Toshiba's first effort with an Android-based 10-inch slate looks to be cut from the same cloth. The Thrive doesn't make any apologies for its size and weight. It's built with very rugged construction and is designed to be full-featured. Toshiba plans to make its upcoming 10-inch tablet known as the Thrive available on July 10. The Thrive is a Wi-Fi only tablet that is expected to have a starting price of $429. The tablet will run on Android 3.1 Honeycomb. Unlike some tablets we've seen to date, the Thrive will feature a removable battery. Other key specifications for the Thrive include a 10.1-inch display with a resolution of 1280 x 800 along with front- and rear-facing cameras.
