All eyes are going to be on Apple next month, as the company is scheduled to announce its next generation iPhone 6S/6S Plus smartphones along with new iPads (and possibly a next generation Apple TV). But attention will shift in October, as Microsoft is set to launch its Surface Pro 4 along with the long-awaited refresh to its Lumia smartphone range at the flagship level. A Surface Pro 4 is almost certainly a lock for the October event, given that the current Surface Pro 3 is over a year old, which is pretty long lifecycle in the tech industry. Back in May, Microsoft revealed that it wouldn't be bringing Windows 10 to its RT devices, including the Surface RT line. While it wasn't that surprising, it was still a bummer for those who gave Microsoft the benefit of the doubt and picked up an RT device in its earlier days. Well, it seems now that not all hope is lost for those RT faithfuls. In the Windows 10 FAQ, of all places, there's a point made about Windows RT devices: "If you’re running Windows RT, your device won’t upgrade to Windows 10. We will have an update available in September 2015 that will improve the Start menu and lock screen. Check Windows Update on your Windows RT device to make sure it is ready to download the update... Earlier this month, Microsoft offered more details and availability information for its forthcoming Surface Hub system. With pre-orders starting July 1st, these 55-inch or 84-inch machines offer a new collaborative version of the Surface experience for businesses, scientists, education and perhaps even power user consumers. Microsoft's third iteration of the Surface Pro was a monumental improvement over the first two incarnations. For many, the third time really was the charm. It was powerful enough to replace most laptops, and versatile enough to serve as two device types without major compromises on either side. Microsoft first gave us a glimpse of the massive Surface Hub display when it announced Windows 10 back in January, but the company today is finally giving us an idea of how much businesses will have to fork over when it comes to put in a purchase order. The smaller of the two, the 55-inch Surface Hub, is priced at a steep $6,999. However, the towering 85-inch Surface Hub will cost an eye-watering $19,999. Just over a month following its official unveil, Microsoft's Surface 3 is already a belle of the tablet ball as far as business is concerned, running Windows 8.1 and offering easy IT integration and robust Enterprise-class security. Microsoft's Surface 3, released in late March, is one hot product. It could even be a possible iPad killer. With its true x86 processor, it's not much of a stretch to believe that owners of the original Surface RT are drooling over the upgrade, and Microsoft seems to realize that as well. If you're in that boat, how does a $150 trade-in offer sound? With its lowest-end Surface 3, that'd make an upgrade cost $350 rather than $500. That's actually a very tempting offer. Microsoft's Surface 3 was announced last week to a good deal of fanfare, primarily because, unlike the original, it features an x86 processor. That one change alone could tremendously enhance the appeal to those who skipped over the original Surface, waiting for the next generation. It means that all of their regular Windows apps will be fully functional on this device - performance limitations aside - which can make the overall usefulness of the new tablet skyrocket. When Microsoft took a $900 million writedown on unsold Surface inventory, it seemed like the writing was on the wall. At the time, Microsoft found itself at a fork in the road -- either abandon what looked like a failed experiment, or hold strong to its long term vision for what Surface could be. Microsoft opted for the latter, taking lessons it learned early on to help turn things around. Last month, we reported that for the first time since their market big break, tablets had begun to decline in overall sales. That caused analysts to backtrack on their projections a little bit, although many are still optimistic for the future. Right now, tablets mostly target the regular consumer, but they could evolve over time and spread out into other parts of the market. According to IDC's latest report, 2015 could see a 2.1% increase in tablet sales - a modest gain, but a gain nonetheless. Beyond that, it continues to believe that we'll see growth in the years ahead, although it's once again going to be modest. Following the Super Bowl earlier this month, Microsoft slashed $100 off a number of its Surface Pro 3 tablets -- no doubt taking advantage of the fact that anyone who watched the big game would have seen blue Surface Pros all over the place. Well, it seems that might not have pushed enough units, as the company is now offering people another chance at a great deal -- at least, as long as you own a previous Surface tablet. If you were one of the more than 100 million people watching the Super Bowl last night, you no doubt noticed blue Microsoft Surface Pro tablets all over the place. As we covered during the preseason, Microsoft's joined forces with the NFL for five seasons to get Surface Pros into the hands of team coaches and other personnel, for a total of 25 units per team. Microsoft’s earnings are up, driven in part to blazing sales of the Microsoft Lumia smartphones and Surface tablets. In its quarterly earnings statement, Microsoft announced that it had revenue of nearly $26.5 billion in the fourth quarter of 2014, up 8 percent from the same quarter a year earlier. Poor Microsoft. Since the release of its Surface Pro 3 tablet, the Remond team has pushed their new slate hard. It's as if the company wanted it to overwrite that part of our memory that recalls the Surface RT and it's monumental losses. This past August, we saw the company make a big move by deploying a boatload of Surface Pro tablets to every team in the NFL, gratis. All season, coaches and even players have made use of them to plan their next course-of-action, and for the most part, they seemed to be well-received. How unflattering. Apple appears to be preparing, at least according to rumors, a 2-in-1 hybrid tablet convertible that's very much competitive to what Microsoft's Surface Pro line offers, along with countless hybrid tablet-notebook convertibles that have custom-built detachable keyboards. Though Jony Ive gets a little feisty about copy-cat devices as not just flattery but more specifically "theft," it does seem ironic that Apple appears to be lining up to potentially follow the trend once again, rather than lead. It’s already been a big week for Adobe, which is hosting the Adobe MAX conference in Los Angeles. The company unveiled new and improved apps for mobile devices and desktop computers, and also announced a joint effort with Microsoft to improve Photoshop and Illustrator on the Microsoft Surface Pro 3. It goes without saying that Microsoft's Surface Pro 3 is the best Surface it's ever created. It righted some of the wrongs of the previous generation, and is simply a drool-worthy tablet / laptop. It's no secret that Microsoft knew that it had a winner on its hands, as it's been pushing the Surface brand hard since its release. Earlier this month, we saw some major proof of this come in the form of NFL sponsorship. Beginning with this year's NFL pre-season, and lasting at least five years, each team will have 25 Surface Pro tablets on-hand to help them better handle their strategies. It's hard to remember now, but there was a time when people were genuinely excited for Microsoft's ARM-based Surface RT and Surface Pro. When the company announced these products, they were seen as a much-needed opportunity for Redmond to spread its wings and tackle fresh markets and new challenges. When the actual devices arrived, the consumer response was, well, "mixed" would be putting it kindly. When Satya Nadella displaced Steve Ballmer as the CEO of Microsoft, I was a bit unsure of what the future would bring. The outlook seemed good, but there was much work to be done in reversing some trends that obviously needed reversing. At this point though, I feel far more confident in the future of the company than I have in quite a while. It's truly unfortunate that Microsoft has to cull a substantial part of its workforce, but that slimming-down, along with the company's renewed vigor and focus, could pay off handsomely for the company. Since the debut of its original model, Microsoft's Surface series has had a bit of a rough time clicking with most consumers, namely those so content with their iOS or Android device. With its latest release, though, Surface Pro 3, the Redmond firm gave us great reason to be excited about a Windows-based tablet (or convertible). Our own Marco Chiappetta gave great praise to the device back in May, noting that pricing, not surprisingly, was its biggest drawback. If there's a new gadget in the world, iFixit has probably purchase one and promptly torn it apart. Such is the case with Microsoft's new Surface Pro 3 -- the first device that the company is directly marketing as an all-out laptop replacement. Early reviews of the tablet hybrid have been quite positive, but if you're wondering what exactly is within its shell, the teardown linked here has the goods. The gurus at iFixit were pleased with just how slim the device was, but they weren't too keen on the adhesive that was used.
