It's hard to tell if today's increasingly thin and light laptops pose engineering challenges that cause them to be built in a way that diminish opportunities for do-it-yourself repair, or if the companies making these things purposely make it difficult. Either way, a teardown analysis of Microsoft's new Surface Book laptop shows why an extended warranty might be a good idea. We'll come back to the topic of warranties, but first, let's discuss the Surface Book's teardown. As usual, it was the fearless folks at iFixIt who tore into the Surface Book like a kid on Christmas, only imagine one of those toys that come taped and wired to the box in such a way that it takes an inordinately long time to... If you're one of what Microsoft classifies as a "small number of customers" who own a Surface Book that exhibits screen flickering, good news, a fix is on the way. Exactly when the fix will come isn't known, nor did Microsoft say what's causing some Surface Book displays to flicker, though some good old fashioned trial and error reveals that it might be related to Hyper-V. More on that in a minute. There are several reports from Surface Book owners of the annoying phenomenon, some of which took videos of the screen flicker. Most of those with units affected by the issue note that it occurs whether the display is docked into the keyboard or separated like a tablet. "Just got my unit, i7 512GB.... Read more...
We must admit, Microsoft really put on an awesome show earlier this month when it revealed new Lumia smartphones, a new Surface Pro 4 and the all-new Surface Book. We were already impressed with the initial announcement of the Surface Book, but our jaws hit the ground when Panos Panay “dropped the mic” after revealing that the “notebook” was in fact a convertible PC with a detachable 13.5-inch tablet/display. While both the Surface Pro 4 and the Surface Book have been available for preorder for the past few weeks, you can now walk into a Microsoft Store — or one of Microsoft’s retail partners — to take one home today. “I hope each of you gets into a store today and is able to get a device,” wrote... Microsoft stunned the entire tech world when it unveiled the Surface Book earlier this month. What we originally thought was simply a sleek 13.5-inch notebook with a funky hinge was actually a 2-in-1 convertible with a detachable “tablet” screen. Microsoft also revealed that the Surface Book could be optioned with a discrete NVIDIA GeForce graphics chips that is housed within the keyboard base. Unfortunately, those looking for a cheap way to boost graphics performance were disappointed to learn that while the base Surface Book started at $1,499, the cheapest SKU with a dedicated GPU (dGPU) started at a much loftier $1,899. Microsoft has heard your cries and has introduced a brand new low-end... Read more...

Apple may be the king of “One More Thing,” but Microsoft revealed today that it too can bring its own flavor of Shock and Awe to a captive audience. Leading up to Microsoft’s Windows 10 Devices event which was held this morning, we heard rumors that a 14-inch Surface tablet would be among the devices unveiled. Many dismissed the reports, but Microsoft delivered in spades today. So we present to you the Surface Book, which features a large 13.5-inch display with 267 pixels per inch (3,000 x 2,000). And would you just look at the display hinge — Microsoft calls it a Dynamic Fulcrum Hinge and we’ve never seen anything quite like it on a laptop. And instead of transforming into a tight wedge shape... Read more...
