Alienware is now offering solid-state hard drives as an option for three of their notebook models, the Area-51 m5550, Area-51 m9750 and the Aurora m9700. While the addition of solid-state drives as an option isn't anything special since several other notebook manufacturers already offer SSDs, what is special is that Alienware will offer them in a RAID 0 configuration. Dell is joining the growing list of companies that are now offering Solid State Drives (SSDs). Though this particular drive is a customer installable PATA drive, it's still a SSD. At press time Dell doesn't seem to have added this to their notebook configuration tool, but we'll keep an eye out for you. One would think it'd be just a matter of time. Flash vendor SanDisk is shipping a 32GB, ATA-interfaced, solid-state drive (SSD) aimed at enterprise notebooks. The 1.8-inch SSD UATA 5000 can radically improve storage performance and reliability, while adding around $600 to retail costs, the company claims. SanDisk describes its SSD as a fifth-generation flash disk design from flash memory pioneer Msystems, which SanDisk acquired last summer. Msystems's earlier "DiskOnChip" products were priced prohibitively for the consumer market, but have proved popular in aerospace, defense, medical, and other reliability-oriented embedded applications, due largely to their ruggedness. In our recent fall IDF coverage we told you about Intel's upcoming Santa Rosa platform for Notebooks that employs something known by its code name as the "Robson" module, that incorporates NAND Flash in a solid state disk-cache design. Here's a little demo of Fuji Siemens notebooks loaded with Windows XP and what NAND flash disk caching can do for boot times... If you were expecting more of a performance boost, remember the OS itself has a lot of influence on boot times as well. Vista's new Windows ReadyDrive technology should really take things to another level and not just with respect to boot times but disk access in general....

DailyTech has once again navigated around NDA's to bring word that they have managed to get their hands on NVIDIA"s upcoming G80 GPU and are sharing some details. Dubbed the Geforce 8800 series, the first two initial flavors will be a GTS and flagship GTX version. Supposedly, these two cards will each have 768MB of GDDR3 memory with the GTX version also having a 384-bit memory interface.
