Mobile Graphics technology is advancing at a fevered pace. In a little over a year, the once dominant Mobility Radeon 9600 was eclipsed by the Mobility Radeon 9700. Then, the MR 9700 was surpassed by the Mobility Radeon 9800, which itself was recently eclipsed by the Mobility Radeon X800.  ATI's mobile GPUs went from 4, to 8, to 12 pixel pipelines, they now have essentially the same feature sets as their desktop equivalents, and they have frame buffers as large as 256MB. And these are only the high-end mobile products to come from ATI. They also released a few mid-ranges mobile GPUs, namely the Mobility Radeon X600 and X300.  In addition, NVIDIA also released their own group of mobile... Read more...

There's a certain allure in being able to make the claim that you can double the performance of anything. All too often, overzealous marketing campaigns in the high-tech field have made a "theoretical" claim of this sort, all the while falling well short in real-world performance metrics.  The PC graphics industry has had its hand at blurring this line, as well, but the last new architecture launches from both NVIDIA and ATi have in many cases actually delivered on this bold statement as compared to their respective previous-gen product offerings. Another way you can make this claim without totally having to sling the snake oil is to pair up two of your latest and greatest products... Read more...
