Oftentimes, it's easy to just gloss over the nuts and bolts of what makes our technology work. After all, so long as it turns on and functions as advertised, why would the average consumer care? After initially seeding the Samsung XP941 PCIe SSD to notebook manufacturers earlier this year, Samsung announced that the drives are now in mass production and will show up in products on store shelves later this year. The XP941 family of PCIe SSDs consists of 128GB, 256GB, and 512GB capacities and offers sequential reads of 1400MBps over a PCIe 2.0 interface. The drives will feature the 10nm-class (between 10nm and 20nm) technology and the M.2 form factor, which is 80mm x 22mm and weighing in at 6 grams. We’ve been critical of Apple recently for being frustratingly stagnant in terms of innovation (at least with handsets), and while it’s still debatable whether the iOS 7 and Mac OS X Maverick updates are worth getting excited about, Apple’s forthcoming Mac Pro certainly piques our collective interest; it portends some of that industrial design meets superb engineering, meets high-end features flair that we haven’t seen from Apple much lately. There’s of course the obvious fact that the Mac Pro is built as a cylinder with all the components facing inward as opposed to the big rectangular box style of most computer chassis. The Intel SSD DC S3500 as it is known, is similar in a number of ways to the SSD DC S3700 we evaluated a few months back. The new drives, however, are built around more affordable NAND flash memory than the previously released DC S3700-series drives. Regardless, data integrity and consistent performance remain key differentiators for Intel’s datacenter-targeted “DC”-branded drives, but the SSD DC S3500 will do so at much more mainstream price points than the higher-end DC S3700-series drives. OCZ already offers a wide array of popular, high performance SSDs, but to the company’s credit, it’s not resting on its laurels. After employing SandForce controllers on some of the earlier Vertex SSDs, OCZ snapped up Indilinx and is using what is now its own proprietary silicon in many of its drives. Thus, the brand new OCZ Vertex 450 SSD we'll be showing you here today with an Indilinx Barefoot 3 M10 series controller inside is very much a “vertical” effort, with the Indilinx and OCZ-owned PLX teams building both the silicon and firmware. It's pretty amazing how much we can store digitally on miniscule flash devices. Just look at Innodisk's latest creation, touted as the planet's first industrial-embedded industry's first SATA device in accordance to SATA µSSD standards – nanoSSD. Through the integration of a control chip, flash memory and peripheral power components into a single ball grid array (BGA) package, Innodisk has managed to reduce the size of the nanoSSD to approximately 1% the size of a 2.5" SSD. HGST (formerly Hitachi Global Storage Technologies and now a wholly owned subsidiary of Western Digital) claims that its latest mobile hard drive, the Travelstar 5K1500, offers the--and we quote--“highest storage density of any hard disk drive today”. Those are strong words, but HGST may have something there. They crammed 1.5TB into a 2.5-inch, 9.5mm chassis that houses three platters. The drives also feature 32MB cache and a 6Gbps SATA interface with 5400 RPM speed. At idle, the Travelstar 5K1500 consumes just 0.5W of power and emits 2.5 bels, making it both power efficient and very quiet--both of which are features that mobile system makers cherish. Although it’s by no means the only 4TB desktop hard drive on the block, Seagate’s new Desktop HDD does boast an impressive density of 1TB per platter, which the company claims is an industry first. Seagate has a couple more industry-leading declarations for the drive, too, including the lowest cost per gigabyte and highest average data rate (146MBps). Corsair tends to be somewhat measured in their approach to certain markets and only enters them with products that are clearly differentiated from the competition. That’s true for their cases, peripherals, power supplies, and many other product lines. Corsair, however, has been relatively adventurous in regard to Solid State Drives. Over the last few years, Corsair has offered SSDs built around controllers from virtually all of the major players, including Marvell, SandForce, Indilinx, and Samsung, among others.
