Western Digital has announced a line of SAS and SATA hard drives designed for both the consumer and enterprise markets, and they’re designed for high-capacity and longevity. The 3.5-inch, 7,200RPM WD RE SATA drives are available in capacities of 2TB, 3TB, and 4TB capacities, and the SAS drives come in 1TB, 2TB, 3TB, or 4TB. Western Digital sees the drives as ideal for public and private cloud environments. The higher storage density allows companies to include more storage capacity in a smaller footprint, which is always a plus, and the drives are designed to last, thereby cutting down on lifecycle management costs. Western Digital’s color-coded families of hard drives added another member today in the form of WD Red, a line of 3.5-inch drives designed specifically for small office/home office NAS systems with between one and five bays. The drives come in capacities of 1TB, 2TB, and 3TB (SATA 6Gbps) and feature NASware and 3D Active Balance Plus technology for better reliability and system performance, IntelliPower RPM, 145 or 150 MB/s transfer performance (depending on the model), 64MB cache, and are rated for 1 million MTBF. Being able to easily swap drives in and out of a system without fiddling with cables is utterly convenient, especially if you swap out drives frequently, and Sharkoon has a new 2-in-1 SATA QuickPort product to make it even easier. The Sharkoon SATA QuickPort Intern Multi is a mouthful to say, but it appears laden with features. OCZ Technology’s Vertex series of solid state drives have been consistently popular with enthusiasts since their initial arrival in 2009. OCZ has made significant changes with each successive generation of Vertex solid state drives, but generally speaking, each one has offered strong performance and was considered among the best overall values in the consumer SSD space. The original Vertex SSD was built around the Indilinx Barefoot controller, which was competitive when first released, but didn’t quite perform as well as some of the higher-end drives available at the time. Marvell is doing some magnificent things in the storage space lately. Hot on the heels of co-developing the "Kilimanjaro" native PCIe to NAND flash controller platform with OCZ (demonstrated via OCZ's new Z-Drive R5, which we covered the announcement here), Marvell on Monday unveiled its 88SE9230 6Gbps SATA controller powered by HyperDuo embedded processor technology. The Serial ATA International Organization (let's just call them SATA-IO for short) announced this week it's developing a new standard called SATA Express. This is exactly what it sounds like, in that the new specification takes the Serial ATA standard and PCI Express, tosses them into a high-tech blender, and what comes out is a faster interface for SATA devices called SATA Express. Doesn't that sound groovy? It should, because this technology sidesteps the SATA bottleneck that could come into play as solid state drives continue to get faster. Intel officially took the wraps off their third-generation solid state drive, the follow-up to the company’s popular X25-M G2. The Intel SSD 320 Series drives, as they are known, feature a proprietary, Intel-built drive controller, paired to cutting edge, 25nm NAND flash memory. Just last week, we gave a glimpse of what OCZ has in store for the enterprise SSD market with our preview of the Vertex 3 Pro. Without giving away all of the juicy details, the Vertex 3 Pro essentially buried the competition and offered performance that was significantly better than any current-gen solid state drive. As we mentioned though, the Vertex 3 Pro is an enterprise-class drive, and as such, it sports a price tag outside of the realm of your typical PC enthusiast. Last week, Intel announced it was temporarily halting shipments of its Sandy Bridge-compatible 6 Series Chipset due to a long-term reliability problem with the conventional SATA II ports on all P67 motherboards. Today, the company announced a partial reversal of that decision. The company's PR statement states: Intel subsequently initiated extensive discussions with computer makers about this topic...As a result of these discussions and specific requests from computer makers, Intel is resuming shipments of the Intel® 6 Series Chipset for use only in PC system configurations that are not impacted by the design issue. Intel announced this morning that it's been forced to stop shipping existing Sandy Bridge motherboards. The company recently discovered a design issue in its P67 (Cougar Point) chipset that, over time, could cause SATA performance to degrade and possibly fail altogether. The problem only affects older 3G SATA ports—Intel's 6G implementation is unaffected—but it's going to take several weeks for the company to implement and ramp the new motherboard revision. During its press conference, Intel explained that the erratum only appeared after its extensive validation process had concluded. In some ways, Samsung is a silicon ninja in the solid state drive (SSD) space.  Whether you realize it or not, Samsung has been churning out their own SSDs for some time (as well as the actual NAND Flash chips themselves of course), only up until now they've come pre-packaged with OEM notebooks or rebadged under another company's branding. With the introduction of the new 470 series, Samsung is finally selling its own branded SSDs, but that's not all.
