Solid State Drives may be the next big thing, but hard drives aren't going anywhere anytime soon. Not until everyone wins the lottery, anyway. Toshiba has this week introduced their newest 2.5" drive, a 600GB unit that marks the company's first SAS self-encrypting enterprise drive. For starters, 600GB is a lot of space for a 2.5" form factor drive, and Toshiba claims that this new MBF family represents the industry's highest-capacity 2.5-inch enterprise-class HDD.It's also the company's first enterprise-class self-encrypting drive (SED), which "demonstrates the successful integration of Toshiba and Fujitsu's HDD business last year and illustrates Toshiba's capability and commitment to building... Today Seagate has announced two new models of its award winning and industry mainstay Cheetah enterprise class hard drives, the Cheetah 15K.7 and Cheetah NS.2. What’s really significant about these models is that they are 3.5” form factor drives in larger than previously available (SAS) capacities. This means that companies with server and storage arrays that already have backplanes and rack sleds for 3.5” drives can be upgraded in capacity without having to be replaced thus increasing the equipments lifecycle. This fits especially well in this economic climate where IT budgets have been slashed while storage needs continue to rise. The new Seagate Cheetah 15K.7 and Cheetah NS.2 drives provide... So we were kicking around the lab for the weekend with nothing much to do (ok, ok, we have plenty to do but we decided to goof off).  And what do any self-respecting Tech Geeks do with a little time on their hands?  We take stuff apart of course.  This time our victim was the Dell Studio Hybrid.  We'll be showcasing this machine next week in on our Video Spotlight channel but this sneak peek will actually give you a pretty solid understanding of what the Studio Hybrid is made of.  Actually, you'll see exactly what she's made of here...         The Dell Studio Hybrid, that we'll be looking at next week, is built upon an Intel 965 chipset with... The Data Center, HotHardware's new community for IT professionals, is sponsored by Dell's Future of Storage. This article is part of our ongoing series of topics and discussions related to IT, Enterprise Storage and related storage technologies. Today, we’ll be showcasing one of the most significant developments to date, toward getting SAS (Serial-Attached SCSI) more frequently into the vernaculars of workstation/server buyers and maybe even a few enthusiasts - relatively cheap, high-capacity SAS storage – thanks to Seagate.  Seagate currently offers 10,000 and 15,000 RPM disks with SAS interfaces at a fraction of the capacity versus SATA offerings and as such, much higher prices.However,... Let’s talk about SCSI for a moment. The disk interface which was once ubiquitous with high-end workstations and servers is now on the verge of obsolescence. With the influx of inexpensive and reliable Serial ATA hard disks and hardware SATA RAID controllers (which can provide excellent performance at a fraction of a SCSI’s price), it’s not surprising to see why legacy SCSI doesn’t even enter the mind of enterprise server and workstation platform buyers, even those diehards of the past. However, like PATA's evolution to SATA, SCSI has also gone the way of serial connectivity and it still holds its advantages. For example, 15K RPM hard disks are only available with a SCSI or... Serial Attached SCSI or "SAS" as it is commonly known, has been around for a while but it certainly hasn't taken off, especially in the Desktop space, like Serial ATA (SATA).  GamePC, one of our favorite places for serious technical analysis and a highly underrated site, takes a look at a pair of Seagate SAS drives and compares them to WD's 10K RPM Raptor drives.  Of course the 15K RPM SAS drives rip up the Raptors in RAID 0 testing but then again the older 74G Raptor models were used (for-shame!).  Regardless, there's good data here for consideration in your next RAID setup. "Today at GamePC, we've taken our first real look at Serial... Read more...

Transcends TS-ASL3 - i815E Motherboard Straight Shooting Socket 370 Performance By Dave "Davo" Altavilla 12/5/00 It seems like the folks at Transcend only came into the PC Motherboard scene within the last year or so.  However, they have been in business making Memory Modules and Motherboards since 1988.  Perhaps the reason they seem so new to us this year at HotHardware, is because their product offering has been rounding out nicely as of recent. On our first pass with a Transcend product, we showed you one of their VIA based offerings.  This is a HotHardware look at Transcend's efforts with Intel's very popular new mainstream chipset, the i815E.  Transcend's VIA...
