As the year draws to a close, Sonic Solutions has announced that their RoxioNow platform licensee Sears and Kmart have started their own online movie download service by the name of Alphaline Entertainment. The world probably doesn't need another movie download service at the moment, but with the winners and losers still being sorted out, Sears is hoping to branch out and find revenue from a very unlikely source. Don't be ashamed if you've never heard of Rovi. Unlike Sony, Microsoft and Apple, Rovi isn't exactly a household name in the consumer electronics universe. But they're taking one step more to becoming just that with a purchase agreement to pick up Sonic Solutions. Sonic is best known today for their content delivery technologies and content partnerships. Lots of streaming media options today rely on Sonic Solutions, and now, they'll rely on Rovi. Sonic Solutions has been rapidly moving to expand their RoxioNow platform for quite some time; it's definitely been a focal point of the company, and with the heightened level of competition surrounding connected HDTVs, we can understand why. Now, the company has managed a deal with Trident, a company that produces system-on-chips (SoCs) for leading HDTV makers. And so it begins. Boxee, which has generally let users access a wealth of free online content from a variety of locations, has finally seen the light: you need premium content (or a great Plan B) to stay afloat in today's environment. The company has been quoted as saying that they aren't planning to make anything from their partnership with D-Link on the Boxee Box, but now that they've opened this window, there's really no turning back.
