A company called Limbitless has teamed up with 343 Industries, the game developer behind some of the Halo games, to create some very cool prosthetic limbs for children. These prosthetic limbs are Halo-themed, 3D printed units that 343 Industries says are made available to "young heroes." Limbitless Solutions is a non-profit organization that creates affordable prosthetic limb devices for kids using rapid prototyping technology, specifically 3D printing. The arms it creates are capable of gripping objects and making various gestures. The company fits the limbs to children at a fraction of the cost of other prosthetic devices on the market today. The "Bionic Arm" prosthetics that the company creates... Read more...
For decades, one of the most-studied and elusive cures in medical science has been biotechnology that would allow humans to walk again after spinal cord trauma. Other prosthetic devices have advanced enormously over the last 50 years, thanks to the integration of miniaturized motors, space-age materials, and cutting edge fabrication, while repairing damage to the nervous system has advanced at a comparative snail's pace. Now, a group of researchers has demonstrated a new device that allows paralyzed rats to walk again, and they're hoping it can do the same for humans. To understand the significance of this new device, dubbed the e-Dura, we need to talk a bit about the underlying problem. When... Read more...
Les Baugh, a Colorado man who lost both arms in an electrical accident 40 years ago, is looking forward to being able to insert change into a soda machine and retrieving the beverage himself. But thanks to the wonders of science and technology -- and Johns Hopkins University Applied Physics Laboratory (APL) -- he'll regain some of those functions while making history as the first bilateral shoulder-level amputee to wear and simultaneously control two Modular Prosthetic Limbs (MPLs). This is the result of an on-site field study funded by APL and intended to assess the usability of the MPL, which was developed over the past decade as part of the Revolutionizing Prosthetics Program. But before he... Read more...
Abandoned as a puppy along with his mother and siblings by his original owners, and after losing his paws to frostbite, Naki'o has become the world's first dog to be fitted with a complete set of four prosthetic paws, turning him into a "bionic dog." Christie Pace was looking for a playmate for her Jack Russell terrier mix Poki, and fell in love with Naki'o despite his infirmities. She held fundraisers in order to provide him with two prosthetics for his rear legs, but after the company that provided them, Orthopets, saw how well the red heeler puppy did with the first two, decided to give him the other two limbs free of charge. Watch a couple of videos below. Although you might think Naki'o... Read more...
