Since Amazon MP3 opened, it's been obvious that Apple would have to respond to its lower prices, and they have, by lowering prices on its unprotected music files to match at 99 cents. While there is no reason to think that Amazon has taken the market by storm, it’s clear that it is a competitive force. If iPod users decide to try Amazon’s store in order to save 30 cents a track, suddenly the iTunes would become less central to the online music business. Nothing would do more to please the music labels, which have been increasingly concerned that Apple is dictating the terms of their business.Amazon still has advantages, with MP3 format vs AAC, and with tracks from Universal Music Group. ... "There aren't many events as exciting... Read more...
It appears that Intel's plans to change their consumer CPU nomenclature (again) have proven a bit too much too soon for some partners, who are more than likely worried that another alteration to naming conventions could throw off some of their less technically oriented customers. On top of those concerns it is also widely believed that the initial announcement of Viiv and subsequent attempts to build Viiv into a brand name haven't met with the levels of success that Intel has hoped for.“Intel's plans to unify the naming scheme for its CPUs, Viiv and vPro platforms are to be put on hold, according to sources at PC makers.Due to protests from the market, Intel recently notified its partners that... It appears the approval was given on August 31st, but for some reason the news is just leaking out now.  In any case, there hadn't been any official announcements by Toshiba or the DVD Forum prior to the leaked information. The 51 GB derivative enables three layers to be bonded together within the same 0.6 mm substrate limitations as standard discs, with varying reflectivity for each layer that enables contents from buried layers to be revealed, even through the bonding material. Multi-layer bonding is not a novel process, though the reflectivity formula is. Engineers from Warner Bros. have filed patents for similar multi-layer bonding concepts including, according to patents, a four-layer process,... Read more...
A lot of attention is paid to framerates when discussing graphics hardware, and rightfully so.  Some argue that they are an outdated method for assessing a video card's performance, but when assessing a potential purchase, buyers need some way to determine why one card is superior to the other.  We can talk about how a card "feels" during gameplay, but framerates quantify that performance.  While framerates should not be your sole purpose for deciding on whether a particular graphics card is the right fit for your needs, they can be a useful tool for assessing the overall value of a product. Case in point, back when reviewing an ASUS EN8800GTX in December, the card churned through everything... Read more...
YouTube is in hot water in Germany over archival and modern clips portraying Nazi and neo-Nazi activities.  In Austria, the focus is focus is on those in the video - young soldiers apparently giving the Nazi salute. In the video shown on YouTube before being removed, a young man in army uniform marches by and stretches out his right arm in a Hitler salute. A second, shaven-headed soldier does the same, shouting: "Heil Hitler!" "There is zero tolerance for such actions. Those involved will have to answer to the army and the law and take the consequences," said Darabos, a Social Democrat. State prosecutors had launched an investigation at his request. Whenever... Just two days ago Earthlink announced a layoff of 50% of its workforce  Additionally, they announced that they felt they were going to re-evaluate their municipal wi-fi plans, which included (among other cities) citywide services in San Francisco.  It seems re-evaluation has already taken place, as the San Francisco wi-fi plan, three years in the making, is now dead. The contract, which was three years in the making, had run into snags with the Board of Supervisors, but ultimately it was undone when Atlanta-based EarthLink announced Tuesday that it no longer believed providing citywide Wi-Fi was economically viable for the company. Newsom blamed the... Read more...

Yesterday, Dell announced their new line of OptiPlex 755 commercial desktop systems and touted the machines as the “world’s most manageable, energy efficient commercial desktop ever.”  The press release on Dell’s website draws attention to the OptiPlex 755’s Gold EPEAT Rating and Energy Star 4.0 Compliance, and even takes a jab at Hewlett Packard, but what you may not have noticed is that Dell is now offering ATI Radeon HD 2400 Pro and XT cards as an upgrade from the stock Intel IGP.  And it’s not just on the OptiPlex 755.  The new Radeons are available as options on the OptiPlex 740 and 745 as well.  This is a big design win for AMD.... If you have ever been in the market for a graphics card, you are undoubtedly familiar with the constantly changing graphics card market. About every 8-10 months, new GPUs are introduced by NVIDIA and ATI, and after their introduction, dozens of graphics cards built by their add in board partners come to market. Because these add in board partners all use the same graphics chips supplied by the two major graphics card companies, they have to use their marketing savvy to create extra value and incentive for consumers to buy their products. Over the years we’ve seen companies bundle the hottest new games, add new video connections, new cooling units, and even build their... Read more...
This past week, we attended an event where Intel gave us specific detail on the new hardware and features that are part of their vPro platform technology for 2007. If you’re unfamiliar with vPro, it’s not a singular product or chip. Like Centrino for example, vPro is an Intel platform technology that’s comprised of a CPU, chipset, network controller, and proprietary software, that when combined, offer powerful hardware-based security and management capabilities for the enterprise.            Intel Core 2 Duo Processors,...
